the political opinions, till thai is asked is that the same
protection shall bo given to one and all.
You will not uuderslnud us as now replying to your

t party, but us the representatives ol all classes of the

Frederick Detrick, proprietor of a .mall lager beer
taloon at No. 440 West Fifty-third street, committed

Yesterday afternoon the eon, in company with a Mr.
Dinglenieyor, found the soloon door locked, and look
trig in enw Hcirick apparently standing at tbe bedroom
dourwuv. They paid no lurtiter attention to hltn until
half nu hour later, when, returning, tbey saw blm iu
tiie same position. They tlu n unlocked the door and
entered. Del rick was hang ng by the neck to the bed
room door, dead. A leather strap which be alsrnys
wore around his waist served tor .1 ro|e. The body was
sin: warm, but beyond resuscitation.
The deceased was lilty-slx years ot age and a native
of Uormsuy. lie bad been a widower lor several
year a Coroner KUlnger took charge ot the cue and
will bold an Inquest this week.
A DISAPPOINTED JUDGE.
Last night at ten o'clock Judge Morgan heard tbat
Captain Williams wis arresting large numbers of liquor
dealers In tbe Tweuty-niatb prcclnct, and be strai.bt
way hurried to the Washington I'lace 1'ollce Court to
dispose of the cases. Alter openiug court he notified
Inspector Speight, in command at Headquarters, tbst
he would attend to tbe arrests in tbe Twenty-ninth
iirecimt, and fit plain H lllmnis was telegraphed. The
judge waited tn patience, lint no prisoners came, la
their place-, however, came several po.illcisns who,
seeing lights In the courtroom and hearing vague
rumors ot wholesale arrests, went tu to see tbs lull.
After the iapso of about tony minutes five prisoners
were brought In front the Twenty-ninth precinct one
was James I.. Harry, arretted for selling liquor in
F.irker't saloon. No. .'>03 Sixth uvrnue, who w as released
?n parole to (urnish $100 ball. Tbe others were simply

judge and spectators went away disappointed.

at three o'clock this morniug at Ills residence ou a

ou election day. The manner of Marcus' arrest, as
he was driving away Irotn the headquarters

at the time, hut was secured at about three o clock
this niornlug. l!e was taken to the Central l'otice
Station early this morning and arraigned before
Magistrate Carpenter, by whom ho was ordered to pro
cure $5,000 ball for his appearance when wanted.
This Josephs procured, and was set at liberty.

as ho Is always called, has been for years tn this city a
well knowu democratic politician ol the ihtrd-rate,
pot-house type, never enjoying a particularly high
si.tudiug. lie has served several terms in the Mute

Legislature, Is now ? candidate lor the Legislature from
the Twentieth district, lias been in councils in tnis city,
and bus been active in local party work. Ho is tbe

Mr. Christian Knuass, chairman of the republican
City Ccnirut Committee, claims to have discovered a

ceipts pretending to certtly that the holders had paid

every one who oxerci.-es the truuetnse to puy. Mr.
Kneuis decllues as yet to give the details ol ihe con
spiracy l ocalise ut least one more arrest is to bo made.
It is known trial tbe police are looking lor another
well known ueinocratic local leuiTer wuo is one of their
party organizers here aud was a delegate to the Nation;
al Convention at St, Louis.
To morrow, at two o'clock, tbo examination before
the magistrate is (o take place In the case ol Josephs
aud Marcus, when sonic idea ol the extent of the aliened
plot may possibly ho obtained. The bundles of paper
captured by tho police are blank, except lhat they
have the words "l'ersonal Tax, lfTd," in wuter murk.

to as good account as they may the capture ol the

the dominant party herd whenever it lias suited their
purposes. Any candidate on the republic.iU ticket, or
any worker lor the party who so chooses, cuu get by
the ]K>cketlul, without the payment ol a cent of
money, lux receipts signed in blank, with tho words,
''tor the Tax Receiver." Kacli receipt is supposed to
certify that John Doe or Ktcbard Hoe bus paid ftlly
cents porsonal tax to tho city i n\ Receiver, but these
receipts are latse and fraudulent, because they
ure signed by some city ollbiul without any
name being tilled In, and they do not represent a single
cent that has goue into the hands ol tho City Treas
urer. I heso receipts arc as fruuJulenl us those cap
tured last uight; yet there ure dozens of city olllcials
and political hacks in 1'hliadelpnla who go about to-day
1 with their pockets stuffed with these pieces ol paper,
' wuich they distribute right and left to whoever will

arc so notorious that tucy would not need to be recited
to any lutoillgout citUen of 'Philadelphia. Every voteV
here knows, to put the situation lu a few words, that
whoever votes tho King tickot need not pay his titty
cents poll tux. If he lives in a ropuhlicau district his
lax recoipt will never be called for. If he lives in a
district vrbero the opposition have any strength ho
may be uskod for It, but lie need only show <>no which
he can procure lor nothing, and upon which he writes

Alexander McClurc, the veteran politician and editor
ol the Times, what ho thought oi tho fraudulent tax
receipla that had been louud, lie smiled slguiticaiitly
and said, "Why, my dear sir, go lo Rowan, and he'il
give you a bushel.'' Kowait is the republican candi
date lor dherifl. "Has this sort of thing ever beeu
attempted before f" the correspondent asked. "Why,
no." was the reply: "1 never thought any one

was not answered at once; but, happening to mention
a terwara (but 1 intended to vine for Hayes, 1 repealed
my qucsliou und was told, "Oh, tuut will be all right;
you Just go aud vole; iiobody will ask you lor any
poll-tax." This took place in tbe ollice ol the city
oftlcial supposed to attend to the purging ol the list's
of voters ol those who urc not qualified by not having
paid their tax or other reason.

some are expected. Tbe paper, it has beeu discovered
by the police, was manufactured iu Connecticut. An
address, still legible on ono of tbe bundles, shows that
