THE COURTS. Another Tale cf Domestic Infelicity. A Father Seeking Possession of His Children. TuE ESTiO\ OP TAXING BANK SHAKES. Important Decioion by the Supreme Court, General Term. There was a considerable stir In Supreme Court, Chamber*, yesterday afternoon when ll became icuown thai there wan to bo an argument la the cate of Mr. lumen Roe, a resident of Newburg, who, with all the proverbial paternal atlecttou. Is seeking to recover the justody of hi* two inlaat children now in pos?e*sion ?i their mother, Mrs. Roe. It seems that some iliffl suliy aroie between the husband and wife, and itio rile, perhaps intending to escape the alleged inhuman tud cruel treatment ol her husbund, look the children, tod, without the knowledge ol her lord and master, wandered away from home for parts unknown. She dually came to tbia cltv, where ahe waa loliowcd by her husband. She has instituted a ault aguinsi him lor limited divorce on the ground ol alleged cruei and inhuman treatment. Mr. Hoe sued out a writ ol habeas corpus, and the mutter same up boloro Judge l.uwrenae yesterday. Mr. Bangs appeared lor the husband and General Bur lett lor the wile. The wile's nauie is Mary Stewart ioe, and tier maiden nume was Norton. Counsel tgreed to reler the question of alimouy pending .-uit tud the custody ol the children, and Juduo Hosworth ?ran appointed releree. The husband's counsel then Hated that the husband would give up tiia house to tlie wilo and children mean lime, provided ho had reasonable access to ibe children. General Burnett said he would agreo provided tuu wile's brother was allowed to reside with her as a protection, lor her lue Das been repeatedly threatened, with a pistol to her bead. Mr. Bang* would uot consent, saviug the brother was at the bot tom ot all the luMchiol, and ihe cruel tr> airoent was ill denied. He objected to opening a reeking mass of recrimination in that place. The counsel then made a Itipulatiou that the mother was to resido with the * ifo pendiug tue reieree's report, and tho Court reserved decision on the question 01 granting a temporary allow ance. Tho husband Is uliegcd to be worth $600,000, and It was argued thai the wile ought certaiuly to re ceive a sufficient amount to pay the ncce>?ary expenses ol tho litigation. TAXING BANK SHARES. A very important decision was rendered by tuo Su pronie Court, General Term, yesterday, In the case ol [ho Gallatin National Bank against the Commissioners ol Taxes. The Court holds that the bank's shares wero rightly assessed bv the Commissioners on their par value, and that the act ol Congress ol 1S45 does uot atl'cct this case; that the assessment m*y be made upon a hum oxccediug the par value. The tax was im posed upon a standard 01 value ascertained by the Junk statement, and the Commissioners acted properly in includtug both tno reserve and surplus. The case sutne up on a writ ol' certiorari by tue Gallatin Na tional Bank aud the writ is now dismissed. The opin ion was rendered by Judge Brady. SUMMARY OF LAW CASES. The grape season boa now nearly closed In thi* city; not that there are not any grapes lor sale, but tue Mmeoftholr abundance has passed. Tho crop thia year has bcon very largo and given every encourage ment to vino growers throughout tho country. Tho actual consumption lu New Yoik city has perhaps been greater In other years, as tho centenuiul excite ment drew a large ponton of tho trade to tho Quaker City. The grape season generally commences about tho middle ol August, and the Aral consignment comes from Charlottesville, Va. Tnoy aro followed by the up rivers (Hudson) and Vinelaud (N. J.) black grapes, that last until about the lOtb ol September; and then we bare the lake grapea, that last up to New Year's, as they manage to keop thom In perfect condition in tubs in large, cool collars, where tho temperature is kept perfectly even at a low points above freezing. The Hudson River vineyards have increased very largoly during tho past lew years, and they now prob. ably yield 600 tons ol grapes por annum, cbieily Con cords and Isabellas. The llnest grapes of outdoor cul ture In tho United States aro probably grown by Messrs. Van Wyck & Johnson, at their vineyard baclc of Fisbkill, on the Hudson They are considered very fine cultivators and grow the speoles known as Allan's Hybrid, Rcbecca and Montgomery. Tbe majority of their Tines are all graited on Concord aud Isabella route. There are ubout 200 cultivators in all on the Hudson, and they produce all the way iroin ono ton to thir.y tous each. Ono cultivator near Coruwall on tho Hudson grew thirty-three tous this seasou. Connec ticut grapes come in early; tboy are nearly all Dlack, chidly Concords. THE LAKE GRAPES. The great vineyards ol tbe State are found around Canandamua Lake, Scnoca Laxe and Crooked Lake, situated in Yates und Sieubou counties. Tho country surroundiug these lakes Is of a rolling nature, smalt bills or a red saudy soil separated by deep ravines, through which mountain streams pour In torrents during the raiuy season. The vineyards are all closo to the shores ol the lake and never exteud more than half a mile from the shore. Their locution uear the water I protects litem Irotn the early frost aud saves the lruit lhal would otherwise be nipped lu the bua. Thero is a | large German settlement at tbo head ol Cauaudngua Lake, called Naples, where home ol Hie llnest grapes in the country are grown. They ure chiefly black grapes, ana all tho fluer varieties, as l. ose Germans are very artistic cultivators Tho greater i ortiou ol tho grapes that come from tbe lakes are Caiawbas auu Isabellas, und probaOly moro ol iho loriner than ol the latter. There are some very largo wiue cellars on tbe bunks of tbe lakes, and they probably lake iu a ball of the grapes grown in the district, iroin at leasl 1100 lo 40o tons. Tbe wine manufactured in these districts has improved greatly hi the past few years. Some of tho vlnoyard* ure uow quue extensive, and one geutlo man has no less tliau 14o acres under cultivation. TUK KKLI.V ISLAND URATE. The Islands on Luke Erie aro also well adapted to tbe growth of the vine, and Kelly Island especially has obtained a world-wdo reputation. The Isabella grape, grown on Kelly Island, is better adapted lor wiuo ibun it Is wiien grown on any other soli. Tbe must ol tbo Lake Erie grapes go to the Western mar ket, and do not find tDi-tr way to New York. California grapes ol tho liner quululos are brought by last freight all through the season, ana there aro probably naif a dozen car loads taken through every season. 'Ibey run <;htelly on wbuo grapes ol tbo laucy order, such as I okay's. Crapes arc put up in various ways?sometimes in paper boxes, weigl.iug from three to five pounds, wnli about a dozen boxes to tbo c.ise, and again in little louud paper boxe , weighing about two poiiuiis, and nut un lu eusus or crates, holding two dozen ol tho boxes. The annual consumption ofgrapes lu this city varies, more or less, every year, and tins season It will probably amount io something over l.ooo tous. As the crop was so plentiful the prices were not very extravagant, and tho dollciou* fruit came within (he reach of ncurly all classes. THE FIRE UNDERWRITERS. ENGLISH COMPANIES WITHDRAWING FROM THE NATIONAL BOARD. Last week the managers of tho North British Ifcr oaniile Fire lnsurauco Company, located In ibis city, sent to tbe National Hoard ol Fire Underwriters Its resignation as a member of that Hoard. At the samo time the Lancashire Eire Insurance Compauy, of Lon don, doing business at No. 1S7 Urondwuy, sont In its resignation. The Royal Kiro Insurance Company, having offices al No. 641 Wall street, was dropped from tho roll of the National Hoard last October, and al though it was lnvitud to again enter the Hoard, has declined to do so. The action of tneso companies leaves but srx o' tho English companies acting with tho American companies in the lioard. One of tho other prominent Eugush companies b.is never been a member ol tbo National Board. It appears thut the "Royal" bns a system ol busi ness somewhat dilfereut from the majority ol tho American companies, in that the princl| al olllce is iu Eugland and the managers of lhe branches doing busi ness In tliis country, having divided tue work iuio sec tions representing too North, South, East and West brauci.es, report directly to tno hom? olllco aud not to a central olllce here. Consequently, when they wore invited to enter tbo Nattoual Hoard some tune be lore the Chicago flro had demonstrated the noed ol siicu an organization, a ineeliug ol (he managers was held, at which it was agreed thai ihey should cuter Iho Hoard, 11 allowed to speak and vote lor iheir sevtral branches. The National Hoard accopted them ou tnoso terms and affairs worked smoothlv until llie election for oftlcors of the Hoard in September last, When iho "Royal" was notified that its several brunch managers would not be allowed 10 rasi separate ballots?mat only one ballot could iiecast fur llie company. Another meeting Of tbe managers wits field, arid it was decided to withdraw tbe "Royal" Irotu the Board. About ten days after, in October, tbo Hoard uropped tbe company from tbo rolls. Tbe other English communes made a stand against that action, and the "Knyal" w s Invited to rome back, bui declined, partly on the ground lhal some of tho companies, members of the Hoard, were not living up to too rules established to govern tho rales. and thai those who did observe the rules were supporting Ihoxo who evaded them. Sinee that timo tbo managors ol the North British Mnrrauule Insurance tjinpsny, at No. 64 William street, held several meetings, and finally de oidod that while they were no: nor would not be "rate culiors," lliev weru unwilling to observe allot the rules ol the National Hoard, aud without charging nny of Us members with "cutting the rates,*' It was advis able to withdraw from the Hoard nud conduct tho burners of their coiupanv as It seemed best lor Its in terest. Similar action was taken by tbo Lancashire, and both companies have withdrawn. Tbe Executive Committee ol tbo National Hoard Is now In session In this city, hut ft Is not probablo that those companies can bo Induccd lo return into the fold. Wbai iho other English companies will do has not been docidod upon. One ol the representatives of a prominent company said last evening lo a Hkkai.d reporter that. In his opinion, the National Board waa no longer a necessity; that the dearth ol business bad snade competition ver> sharp, and In order to procuro It brokers and agents offered Inducements that com panies who strictly observed iho rules could not oiler, and wero gradually losing their business, and ho be lieved the National Hoard ol jrire Underwriters would soon cease to exist. DASTARDLY VILLANY. Mr. George Lambert, of West Moriches, bad Just gone to bed on Monday evening, and his wife was pre paring to retire, when a tap waa heard at tbe window, tbo blinds of which wore partly open. Mrs. Lambert ?lep|>ed to tbe wiodow to learn what was wanted, when tbe window was suddenly pushed up and two pistol shots were fired into the room, one of wliieh passed Jast above Mr. Lambert and lodged la tbe wall by ibe bed. Ha Immediately jumped op and looked out of the window, but could see uo one.
