Money ou Call Loan.- 3 and 4 Per Cent?Govern ment Bonds Quiet and a Trifle Lower Railway Mortgafres Dnll and Barely ? Firm, Wall Street, \ Ifos uat, Nov. 20-6 P. M | A stormy day la not favorable either to activity or to aa advance In pricea, and the market to day showed rymptouis of yielding to tbe moistening influ ences and would probably bar* dona* ao bad nut Lake Shore, In lie strength, spread a sort ol speculative umbrella over tba railway list. Tbe support wbleb It lent to dthers was inucb more thaa compensate* (or by tbat wbleb It received Itself, . Since, wltb tbe exception of Delaware ana Lacka wanna, It engrossed tbe attention of tbe day. A atrong party, constrocted ol tba old materials, la said to bave taken bold, and paints are aa plenty aa blackberriea that bigb tlgurea will be aaked. Of course there la alwaya a sprinkling of marplots and klljoya la atrew thorns in tbe waya of pleasantness, sad tbeae, sneering at polnta, bave been busily asserting tbat the promised rlso is aolely to make a market to aell other stocka on, and tbat In any event there will be met tbe obstacle of de ereaaed receipts which the road Is now making. Uka the large family with the measles, which there was not Inleotion enough to carry all around, there was not buainesa enough to supply Lake Shore md tbe rest of tbe market also, and consequently tho otber lanclea were reduced to a retail trade, In which tbe nimble alzpence was paramount to the slow shill ing; eighths were mora frequent as fluctuattona than qaartars and halves. Quota!loas were Irregular, However, the Nortbwest erna improving under tha favorable statement Juat made, and tbe Si Pauls declining bacauae there waa ao favorable statement to make, while Rock Island dropped oQ' a half point, for reaaoaa unknown, and Michigan Central barely held Its own. Apropos of tha Granger stocks, we have received a letter commenting in atrong terms of disapproval upon certain strictures mada In this column In relerence to tbe Nortbweatern Railroad Company. The aourca from which It proceeds Is so eminently respectable that It requirea attention. Our observa tions were intended to rtflect tho views of welt Informed operator*, rather than our own, and we are unable to discover that these views are either ex aggerated or untrue. That they exist can be proved by a simple appeal to a popular verdict or by a glance at tbe share list, which to-day quotes tbe preferred stock at 58 und the common at *5. We submit that these Ogurea are a cheap expression of values If me stock Itself or Ha management is be yond reproach. But tbe question arises, Is not tba company itself to blame for the existence of these prejudiced views in tbat it refrains irom furnishing tbe public with facts )o controversion thereof?an exhibit ol Ha prospect, Its business and Internal condition?except at long and incertaln periods? Tbia vory covering up system lo rltea suspicion and begets a feellug tbat tbere Is some thing concealed which will not bear tbe light. But there are otber facts and Impressions afloat arhich may bo true or may be false. In either caao they injuriously affect tno stock. Imprimu there bas been po dividend paid since June, 1873, when 3* per cent waa divided upon the preferred stock, and tbora exists a widespread belief Ibat even this was taken from part of the proceeds of tha aale of gold bonds. * A belief proruils tbat by some co-operative process tbe fundaand stock of tbe Rock Island Railroad are used to earry tbe ghares of tho Northwestern Com pany la tha interest or ita speculative managers. Tho fact ia pa taut that Ita llat of dlrectera contains tbe names of noted speculators and stock Jobbers, and faith la wanting iu the belief that ita property la man aged solely in the Interest of stockholders. 0 Tho expected decision of the Supreme Court in tbe ?o-called Granger cases, it Is thought, will be adverse to tbe company. No prospect of dividends on tbe common stock and ao aale for shares except to oover aborts. It may be news to the oompauy that these impres sions prevail, but, knowing them to do so, we sub mit our statement to be correct, that the Northwestern road may be classed among such properties at "are hopeless in respect to dividends and an Incntns upon tbe bands of holders." Next to Lake Shore, Delaware and Lackawanna ?hawed to tbe front aa an ob)eot of interest, though In a trowsy state, which grew worse ' ts tbe day grew older. Opening at 70* It gradually sank down to 68*, with a rally or * only at the close. The depression ia dua to the forthcom ing coal sales, through which medium a supply of 200,000 tons is to be led to a market at present totally devoid of aopetlte and, la fact, Incapable of fcritier deglutition. Tbe quiet strength of the lavorlta at tba close worked up the range af prices throughout the list, and the market finlalied with lair prospecta of additional firmness to-morrow. THE BALKS TO-DAY.
