alluded to yesterday regarding the leasing of Lake
Fbore by Central and Hudson wa. tbl. morning
worked up into a plausible shape, details being given
as to the percentage ol rental and the exact amount ol
stock acquired by Mr. Vandcrbilt in luriberauce or the
sebemo duly stalod. Perhaps one-hair per caul or so
was squeezed out of the Shore lino in the way
of a rtH.? by the ingenious invention, but
believers were few and stock plentiful, and

more serious moment was a real sensation provided
bv a break down in Rock Island and Northwestern
shares. The llrst numod declined Irom 86% to 94, and
of the second tbo common sort lell from 31% to 27,

this there were plenty ol slop-shop reasons, ready
luado to suit the lastca of Inquisitive operators; and
of these the following received chief credence:?
First, that Mr. Tracy was desperately 111, If not de
ceased; and, second, that a certain bank holding ihese
blocks as collaterals against loans had called in lbs
latter and compolied a torcod salo of tho securities, lly
way of lending additional pungoncy to the sensation,
It was whispered (In a Tbesplau way) that a prominent
operator on 'Change had como to grlof through the
compulsory process aforesaid. Wo have reason to be
lieve the report to bo eultrely unfounded, and the
subsequent rally, although of moderate proportions,
couiirms the Impression. A fall back on the part ol
Burlington end Quiucy from 102* to 100% was re
garded as a susploio.1 that tho tnUnU cordiale between
this company and Jay Gould's Western combination
was not so well founded as hud been represented, but
nothing definite was known about tho matter.
Tho market closed nearly as it had opened, tbo epi

oinerwiso have been a state of supremo dulness.
