Yesterday's eruption, In a great measure, subsided
to-day, though there were not wanting times wlien
appearances of a lresh outbreak were threatening
inougb. Tbo ground occupied by the Western and
coal stocks wus no sale abiding place for tbo
?peculator of average buaucial responsibility,
uulet* be wero spry enough to olfcct a
change of base when the spot grew hot un
der bis leot. This it did frequently through alter
nations In prices, which came ottou enough and rapid
enough to keep tbo souls of bulls aud bears vibrating
botween an ocstusv of hope and a paroxysm of terror.
The game of speculation was being played upon a blue
day, with blue surroundings, aud cerulean chips only
were the meto and lining expressions of opinion.
"It goes without saying" that the stocks which created
the hubbub yesterday kept up ths racket to-day, aud
accordingly popular attention was directed to the
course ot such shares as bad boon brought Into promi
nence by the events ot tho day belorc. The poslllvo
denial ol stories pointing to a receiver for Dolawaro
and Hudson aud tho declaration from official sources
thai tho Lackawanna Company was In no financial
Stress restored confidence in a groat measure In these
securities and in early hours oraalud a bettor rango of

Subsequently quotations decllnod, and through the
rest of tho day perlormed a hattlcdoor and shuttlecock
movement which lauded them a irifio better than at
the close yesterday.
It appears by a loiter of Mr. Oowan, published this
morning, that the eompact'botwccn the coal companies
Is not to be trusted to the "honor bright" principle
after all, but that some sort ol police system is to he
devised to prevcut surreptitious cheating.
A "cop," with a club, to arrest fraud In tho coal
krudo will be a feature at ooco novel and uncompli
mentary.
The soroheads In Northwost and Rook Island ex
hibited their hurls by a lurtber selling down of theso
properties. Tho lattor at one time was especially wosk
lromu natural solicitude concerning the present "local
habitation" of the company's 40,000 shares. Any In
lortuuiiou as to whether this block of stook Is still
locked up In tho coiupuuy's cullers, or bus boen per
muted to wander inio tho dangerous products or
tpcculativo margins, will be gratefully roceivod by

The regular monthly meeting of tbo Board of Ol
rectors ol the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company
was hold yesterday at Camden Staiiou. lu addition to

dient to pay said dividend. In view of tbe continued
