A BTNGINO temperance bell at the coopeb

Notwithstanding tbo oppressively hot weather the
usual Sunday meeting of tbo Amorlcan Temperance
Union lu cooper Institute yesterday afternoon wua
largely attended. Temperance cblmos wcro to be sung
und temperance recitals were to bo uttered by the Rev.
Frederick Bell, of Brooklyn (who is drawing crowdod
audiences as the "Sluging Preacher" at tbo Academy
of Music lu that city); hence tbo unusually large at
tendance.

On being introduced tho Rev. Frei Bell said be waa
glad to bo there this ufternoon, although it was going
heyoud his usual Hun day labors. Ho, however, wished
success to tbo Amorlcan Tempo ranee Union, and was,
therefore, willing to andcrgo some little extra work tor
himself in tts behalf. He would slog a song:?

'The audience demanded an encoro, and the reverend
songster, aftor saving that his time was limited and
that bo bud not corno to ho a figurehead, but would
do us much as his other engagements would permit,
fang "I Am Praying for You," and before be dually
commenced his regular discourse be sang "Niuoly aud

Ho said tho subject 01 temperance was a hackneyed
one, hut although It had boon so long and so eloquently
elaborated upon, lie would attempt to dress up some
ui tne old Ideas in new clotbcs, aud thus endeuvor to
enlist the interest ot his bearers. Not all tiiu calami

misery upon the human race us druukeunes*. It wus
worse lhau war or calami ties of any kind. It has ox
tended to statesmen in high places. Ministers of the
Gospel hud been victims of the leil dosiroyer. Even
woman hud fallen, and there was nothing more pitiable
than ? faiieu woman. Society spurned bor. No one
held out to hor a helping hand. No one followed the
example ol Christ whou he said to the (alien Magdalen,
"Go thou and sin no more.'' But the unfortunate croa
