Ol.rpbaut waa opened laat ovcning at Chlckertng Hall, Mr. Hower Ville being the auctioneer, tbe sulo being under tbe direction o( Mr. S. P. Avery. I here waa a large audience o( ladles and gentlemen, among whom were many buyer*. Tbe rale waa commenced abortly beforo eight o'clock and tbe bidding waa rather inuie for tbe ilrat lew pictures sold. At bair-pust eight tbe unoccupied reserved seal* were thrown open and were soon filled np. Bidding abortly rreabened up and tbe ante began In earnest. fbe Brat evening's sale may be said to'bave beea a success, lor tba average ol tbo pictures brought very good prices, and some exceptionally rood ones. Suvdum's "New Loudon Lighthouse," $200; Hubbard's "Lake George" sold lor $200; Ken sett's "Adrtondacks" lor $350, and Cusllear's "Spring" for $185. Mr. J. A. Harper paid $120 lor Caslleur'a "Summer." His "Autumn" went for $125, and Mr. McCoy bought the very good "Winter," by the same artist, lor $120. Mr. Hoockwulter paid $775 for George H. Boughton'.i "Bashful, Yet Fond," Mr. Van Santvoord $235 tor S. K. Gilford's "Twilight In the Wilderness," Mr. Vernon $200 for Hubbard's "Near Bolton. Lake George," and Mr. Swilt, $425 for J. T. Kenseit's "Conway oillfa." For the eighty-one canvases sold, $17,525 was paid. The sale will bo concluded ibis evening, when the eighty-one remaining pictures will be ollered, among which are Bome very Quo canvases. STUDIO NOTES. Junes M. Hart is at work on a misty glade, down n lane through which cows aro coming in early morn ing to water. Some loregrouud onea have reached the brook. In bis treatment ol these the artist Is usually very successful and will undoubtedly be so this time. The coolness of the forest beyond is very well given and refreshing to the eye. Mr. Hart has just finished on a small or canvas an afternoon scene?a grassy lane with cattle; a few standing to the fore, casting reflections In the clear waters of a spring. Hie distance is very admirable, tho foliage true and tho cattle natural. J. H.
