boon expecting to witneaa the performance of that
difficult toat. Aa the heads of tbe Asaembly
cooled, howorrr, a anfllciont number could not bo
counted 10 back the enterprise. Moanwbtle tbe Gov.
eraor's reasons wero ro pungent, and, In tno main, ao
conclusive, tbat Comptroller Kelly, together with
some of the ablest Donnctors in Mow York, perceived
their loroo on consultation, and resolved at last to
attain the important object ot relieving tbo city tax*
payers by a alraignUorward and hn'adaome concos
lioo. Consequently a memorial was prepared and
aont to tbe Legislature yesterday, signed by a number
of prominent banker*, requesting tbat a bill be passed
to replaeo tbo vetoed bill which would meet tno Gov
ernor's objections.

Following that memorial thore arrived in Albany to
day a oommlttoe of lea or twelve, bankers, merchants
end others, headed by Aleeers. O. B. Potter, President
ot tbe Grocers' Bnnk, and W. H. Webb, with a bill, all
completed and In readtno,-*, drawn up with tbe ap
prowal of Comptroller Kelly and other Influential
officers of tbe New York city government,
who admit tbat tn* iormer bill contained
?*ver*l faolts that were due to oversight
to its preparation. Tbis new bill was taken' to tbo
Governor this afternoon aod read over to him by Mr.
Potter In tbe proseuee o,f other members of the com
mittee. The Governor signified his general satisfac
tion with Its tenor, and subsequently said to your
? correspondedt that it appeared on the first hasty pe
rusal to do away with atl or nearly ell the objection,
