Matinee Performance at the Gaiety Theatre. HONORS WON BY MISS WARD [BX CABLB TO THE HERALD.] London, May 22, 1878. The Herald's correspondent at Brussels telegraphs thus:?"The Belgian govern ment I learn is about to forward a com plaint to the Secretary of State of the United States, to the effect thut, owing to an in complete publication of despatches, Bel gium's action, as well as that of Mr. Del fosse, its Minister at Washington, in regard to the Canadian Fishery Commission has been placed in a wrong light. THB WHOLE TBUTH. "The American government is asked to make a correction by a complete publica tion of all the correspondence leading up to, during and after the sitting of the com mission." mb. oilmore's great success. P. S. Gilmore maybe congratulated upon achieving a thorough success. The London Times this morning in a cordial notice pre dicts that the orchestra will take a prom inent and distinguished part in the musical programme of the Paris Exposition. The Daily Nexcs is equally complimentary. IN HIS HONOR. Over thirty thousand people assembled at the Crystal Palace, Sydenham, this after noon, attracted by the grand military, choral and ballad concert that had been arranged In Mr. Gilmore's honor. AM immense company. ' There were 300 instrumentalist* and 3,000 vocalists on the seats of the Handel orches tra in the great transept. Gilmore's com pany formed a group of subdued color, almost surrounded, as it was, by other bands in brilliant red, scarlet and dark blue uniforms of the Koyal Artillery, the Scots Fusilier Guards, the Horse Guards nnd the Koyal Engineers, and further back, in tho vast semi-circle, was placed tho chorus. MB. OLLMOBE APPEARS. The concert opened with a march, after which ^Oliver Wendell Holmes' "Hymn of Peace" was sung by 3,000 voices. Mr. Gil more having then mounted tho rostrum to lead his band, received an exceedingly warm and enthusiastic greeting. The great glass structuro rang with huz/.as and shouts of welcome. "OOD SAVE THE QUEEN.* In responso to the applause, the band played "God Savo the Queen." All through tho concert there was the same enthusiastic greeting whenever Mr. Gilnioroled his band. Encores were answered by American na tional airs, which were generously ap plauded. THIC SINGERS. The loading singers were Mr. Lloyd, Mme. Patent and Miss Lilian Norton. At the conclusion the bund, aitur playing the national anthem und "God llluss the Prince of Wales," received quite an ovation. EUA OF GOOD PEELING. Tho concert certainly developed a great expression of good fcaliug for America. Ar rangements will probably be made for Mr. Gilmoro by which he will give a scries of furewoll concerts in Loudon und through out tho provinces on his return from Paris und before his departure for America. THE SHAKESPEARE MEMORIAL. A performance was given this after noon at tho Gaiety Thoatre, in aid of the Shakespeare Memorial Tlieutre, Library and Gallery now nearly completed at Ktrutford on-Avon. It was a groat success. A lurgo proportion of the audience were Americans. The entertainment began with the balcony scene from "ltomoo and Juliet," which was charmingly rendered by Misa Adelaide Neilson and Mr. Conway. MUSIC BY TELEPHONE. During tho entr'acte tho music of a harp played at Shakespeare's birthplace was dis tinctly audible through a telephono which was placed upon the stage. This ieaturo of tho entertainment highly amused and interested tho aiuliencu. Mr. Gower, of Providence, It. I., the inventor of tho rna cbinee used on this occasion, eiplained, in a modest, straight forward manner, ^tho scientific principles upon which the lustra ment was made and the sound waves trans mitted. "THE MERCI1ANT OW VENICE." Then followed the fourth act of "Tho Merchant of Venice," which was powerfully rendered, with Mr. Hermann Vexin as 8hy lock and Miss Genevieve Ward as Portia. The acting of Miss Ward was admirnule and impressively drumatic. A HAPPY SPEECH. Miss Kate Field then mudo a neat speech, referring to the object of the performance. Then followed a scene from "As You Like It," delightfully given by Mr. and Mrs. Kendal. Miss Field ulso sang "Angels Ever Bright and Fair." visible music. In the entr'acte the telephone was again employed, and by means of it the music of the harp was again given, accompanied by a visible electric record of the movements of the electricity by means of Geislei's tubes. The stago was darkenod and when the telephone was in operation a ring of intense blue light hung in the air amid the forest scenery of "As You Like It." miss wakd's triumph. The fiiuile, which was Queen Katharine's death scene in "Henry VIII.," was an extra ordinarily powerful conception of Miss Genevieve Ward, vhoso make up was quito astonishing for its contrast to her appearance in tho preceding part of tho performance as tho fair-haired, blooming Portia. The honors of the afternoon's performance be long to her. The English stage has rarely seen such an impressively roalistic death scene. MR. TOREERT'S DEFENCE. HE DENIES Til A?
