Wall 8trm5t, 1 Tuesday, August 12?ti P. M. f Before tho hour for oiieuiug business at the Stock Exchange tliia morning fully three-fourths of the broker* mussed themselves about tlie Lake Shore group and waited motionless, with their eye* fi&eil upon the clock. The went that followed the full of the President's gavel wax suggestive of the old legends wherein the enchantor'a pell which had in the midst of battle turned iuto stone homo uad rider, knight aud squire, is suddenly dissolved, aud the motionless field is like a dash transformed into a scene ot tumultuous strife. The silent, eager crowd seemed transformed into madmen and swayed to aud fro, gesticulating and yelling at the top of their voices. 80 many were the orders aud so great the confusion that while oue person in the crowd was buying Lake Shore at 92 ,S, another was selling at 113. Tho speculative rage seemed to be as high as it was before the panic, and orders to buy stocks poured in from all parts of the country. When the market closed the records of the Exchange showed that 271,000 shares had been dealt in, and the activity wbh undiminished to the lust minute. Oreat buoyancy marked the first hour, and although a reaction was produced by houvy sales for realization about noon a general recovery followed. Money, however, became harder, and the reflection of thia, together with the heavy skies, caused a decliuo ranging from to 2 per cent at tho close. Lake iliorc and the grangers continue the pivots on which- the market turns, or rather the lover by . which it is moved up aud down. Au advance to 1)3 was made iu the first named stock in the early dealings, but It closed at a set back of 1>? per cent. The reports about leasing the road to the New York Ceutral were numerous, as they have been for days past. It wsb oven averted that the directors of botli roads were to moot at Saratoga on Thursday. These stories are said to tlnd their way here from Saratoga^ and notwithstanding their vague character the recent steady rise in the stock leads many to believe that tlicy have a foundation in fact. The reports differ as to how the merger with the Central is to be made. One has it that the eutlre stock of the I.ake Shore is to be replaced with bonds bearing six per rent to be guaranteed by the Ceutral, another that the transaction is to take the form of a lease to the latter road; a third that W. H. Vauderbilt is to turn a controlling interest in the Lake Shore road over to the Ceutral, and receive an equivalent in bonds. All these reports bear a tag to the effect that tho matter will be concluded this week. Tne general impression is that Mr. Vanderbilt is anxious to release in one way or another the largo amount ho now has locked up to maintain control of Lake Shore. Whatever may be the facts, the "street" is not likely to be informed of them until the matter is settled. As to the grangers,, St. Paul closed 1 per ccut lower for the day; Northwest, 1>?; Michigan Central, *4, and Western Union, ll?- The gossips of the street had It that the decline in the leaders of the prosent movement was only temporary. uu IUI IUU ^Uijjuno ui uui/W ui kur ouum interest. The groutoHt strength of the day was displayed by the coal stocks, Delaware and Hudson risiug \ aud closing at an advance o^j, and Lackawanna advancing 1', and retaining 1 per cent of it despite the "slmup" at the close. Their strength was due to the report that a strong pool has been formed to put them np. The heavy balances at the Hub-Treasury, which will in the ordinary course of business be paid out iu a few days, will, it is thought, reader the money market easier?at least uutil the moving of the crops makes a draft upon it.
