8 FIMUL AND COMCIiL A Dull and Steady Market for Stocks. MONEY RULES 6 TO 7. a .. . ^. n *i taovemments Active ana stronger?nauway Bonds Dull and Heavy. Wall Stbekt, J Fkivax. Doc. 5?li P. M. J It ia beginning to be appreciated by commission brokers that the Into serious drop in stocks offoctu. ally killed the speculative t;oo?e which had been laying the golden egg a tor their beuetit. From having had too much to do they arc having too little. Onion, which a couple of weeks back were as thick as leaves in Vailoiukroaa, are thinning off to akeletou proportions. and there ia a goueral wail among the commission men, who neither understand the change nor like it. In comparison with the plethoric times of the last month or two to-day's market waa a dull one indeed. It was "hands off" aa regarded the great speculators and a very gingerly Augering as regarded the small ones. The natural consequence ensued of an inactive market, immaterial variations and a dearth of interest generally. Could one examine into the viscera of bulls and bears (as did the augurs of old), for a forecast of the luture, it is probable that nothing moro satisfactory could be dlscovorod than that tho evidences of a dull and steady market for some weeks to come are strongly developed and that there are reasonable expectations of a highor and buoyant ono after the turn of the year. The whole market to-day was sluggish. Tho Northwestern report, which la certainly very creditable, had in a great measure been discounted and consequently failod to affect the market price. The Erio report fell flat and the fluctuations , in the stock, such as they were, were moro affected by the demands of traders than by the statement of tho company. To the uninquisitive observer the report la a good one, but when considered in the light of the fact that, although the payment of interest on a large proportion of the bonded debt 1a escaped for this yoar and will bo for tho aoxt three years to come. It nevertheless becomes inevitable in 1884. A glance at the report renders It apparent that tho road will have to increase lis earnings very coiixiuuruuiy iu ui? iukihu to enable it to moot As fiscal charges ou the above date. The San Francisco stocks wore lower to-Uay and wore the weak spots iu the market. Tlio coal Hliares were only so so. Coal is being sold from fifty to seventy-five cents below the schedulo price: houco we prcsumo Mr. Gowen's bid, as conveyed in bis letter in the Hicbald of this morning, for "the entire product of any other company at twenty-five cents per ton below its present circular rates" has been accepted. On second thought, however, and in consideration of the circumstancoa which attended a similar purchase, under the same sort of a bluff bid, perhaps It has not. Apropos of the coal stock, it would appear that tho story rife yesterday that the New Jersey Central road was applying for a vacation ot the receivership is erroneous. It la said to apply more correctly to tho Lehigh Wilkesbarre Company, who aro asking to be relieved. There was no fcararo in tho market worth commenting on. The Philadelphia market opened lower and weak, Pennsylvania Itailroad selling ut 50fJ, Reading at 34 and Lehigh at 37ft. With the exception of Readiug, which ralllod to US'* (but afterward fell off), tho whole list drugged and became lower and sluggish at the close. C. Evans Si Co. furnish the closing price of Pennsylvania Railroad aa at 60ft a 60 ft and lU-udlug at 34ft a 34 !*. Total sales ut the Board were only 183,340 shares, against '201,787 yesterday and 319,445 ou Wednesday. J A Tory large meeting of partios engaged In tbt batter trade was bold yesterday at tho American Ex- f f change Rooms. No. 909 Greenwich street, for tbe purpose of taking action to snpprosa tbe sale of oleomargarine, and to raise funds to prosecute all AlfAitilAsa tftAlnlitxf thn aiafntA? nmhihlHnn llm of tBo umt without branding. Mr. Washington Wiuaor ?u elected chairman and Mr. T. Mortimer Heavor acted aa secrotary. The ehalrmaa stated that the sale of i-leomargarine had ' lately increased to alarming proportions. Ha aaked for suggoationa from thoaa present. Mr. WUlat made a motion that a committee of sevea ba appointed to aolicit subscriptions toward a fund* of not less than $5,000 for the proseeutlon of all par* aons violating the law, and that each member of butter trade should pay a pro rtila assessment. This gave rise to a general discussion, in which Mr. Bearer claimed that the trade should employ private counsol to prosecute theif casos, as it vory often happened that the District Attorney did not hare time to go on with them until a year had elapsed. * Mr. Hnanian expressed the opinion that the name of every manufacturer and seller of oleomargarine ' should bo obtained and publiahed for the benefit of 1 consumers aud dairymen. Mr. Miller remarked that there was no law againat the manufacturing or soiling of oleomargarine, but . he asserted, if it was properly branded as the law required It should be, that it would be Impossible to palm it olT on the couaumur as butter. SMALL. MCALKn* IMIDHKII OK. Mr. Douglas insisted that aoino persons tn tha trade bad boeu imponlng on small retail dealers by selling-them oleomargarine for butter, lie cited an instance whore a retail doalor did uot And out hia mistake until his sltcntion had born csllod to tha almost uudistmg^ahable brand on the tub. Ho d?nounced dealers who imposed on retailors in this manner, and said that thuy should not be recognised by tholr brethren in tne trade. Mr. J. H. Ileal contended that olaoraargariuo waa made of the worst rat of .the animal lu all stages of decay, that it was unttt to eat sud that it was inanu- ! tactured id places whoro thosn present could no* live for ten minutes. He claimed that ractorlos In thla city were turniug out millions of pounds ol tho article weekly and shipping the same to Kurope, whero it was taking tha plaoo of dairy butter. The motion of Mr. WiUot waa then adopted, and the following committee was appointed to carry out ita objeot:?John A. .Smith, James Kay, K. Manton. J. H. Hnymour, T. M. Heaver, Louis I)odd aud A.
