On a volume of business lighter than
any reported for a full day In the cur
rent year prices In the Block Exchange,
as a rule, moved within fractional
variation, with no dectdrd tendency In
either direction, although traders called 1
the tone Arm and suggestive of lm- (
prnvement In sentiment In Wall Street i
circle over the general factors with a'
hearing upon the financial market. In
moot respect the trading differed In no
essential from that reported In the dull
operations of Inst week and recent pre
ceding weeks, the greater part of th
total aalea representing wholly profes
sional dealings of the moat unimportant
sort.
There were the same restraining In
fluences that have held speculation In
check for so many days. Although light
appeared ahead In the local traction
labor dispute, the Wall Street district.
and the public aa well, had In mind the
greater labor trouble In the country's
transportation business which no one
could eliminate as a market factor, not
withstanding the confidence shown In
many qunrtora that there would be no
xeneral strike. Among other uncertain-
tlet which perplexed the, operator In
stocks w.iji the position of the crops.
upon which opinions and reports dif
fered widely. For the present, at least,
much uncertainty regarding conditions
In the Western grain field will be elim
inated by to-day'a (lovernment monthly
report, which should afford a truit
itorlhy busts upon which estimates of
yield may be made.
From the course of the rialn market
It wna assumed In some clrclea that re
cent adverse advices from the farms had
overestimated the Injury to the growing
plants In July, but In other qunrters It
was thought that the decline In wheat
and corn was wholly the result of specu
lative conditions In the grain market and
of the belief In hoarlh hoife that the
total visible supply and the unknown
amount of grain In fanners' hands were
much larger than reported and woull
serve In a measure to offset the lighter

ning heavy, while export clearances from
the chief ports of the Atlantic sealoard
In the last six weeks have been much In
excess of those for the corresponding
period In the last two years, exports yes
