tavrs Little Wheat for Report.
if A wheat crop of 654,000.000 bushels
M would amply meet the country's require
ment for home consumption, which De
partment of Agriculture expert estimate
will be about 620,000.000 bushels. That
would leave 34,000,000 bushels available
for export, without taking Into con
sideration that this year' unusually
large carry over of old wheat was some
75,000,000 bushels more than the aver
V as.
Commenting on the report, the bureau
of crops estimate Issued this statement :
"Only a mediocre crop of about 654.
000.000 bushels of wheat compnres with
,, slightly over 1,000,000,000 bushel pro
, duced last year and 728,000,000 the nv
crags of the preceding live" years. A crop
SO forecast has been exceeded In the
last fifteen ears eleven times. About 70

winter variety and 30 per cent, spring.
Ia the last five years about 67 per cent,
bsa been winter and 33 per cent, spring. ;
"During the last month spring wheat
, prospects declined 71,000,000 bushels,
and the preliminary estimate of winter
wheat production Is 34,000,000 bushels
leas than the July 1 forecast. The qual
ity of the winter wheat Is fairly good,
which Is In contrast with last year's
poor quality wheat. Spring wheat qual
ity is not yet definitely known, but the
blighted condition of much of the crop
would indicate considerable shrivelled
and light weight.
"The normal wheat requirement of
X the United States la calculated at 5.3
bushels per capita, plus about 75,000,-
000 bushel for seed. In years when
wheat Is scarce ,the consumption fall
to as low as 5 bushels per capita and
when plentiful Increases to 5.5 per cap
ita. On the basis of 5.3 bushels, the
" total requirements of the United State
the coming season would be about 620,
000,000 buehcls.
Oats Crop Above Average,
The August 1 forecast of the oat
crop, 1,274,000,000 bushels. Is 266,000,000
less than the record production of last
year, but 116,000,000 more than the
nverage of the preceding five years. The
weight of a bushel appears to be running
rather light, particularly in the northern
portion of me onts belt. Prices average
for the United State about 40,1 cents a
bushel, which I 5.3 cents lower than a
year ago. Our foreign trade. In oat I
. small compared to production. Oc-
caslonally we Import more than we ex
port. In 1914, however, the flrt year
of the war, wo exported 100,000,000, or
a per cent, or tne crop.
"The corn forecast Is 278,000,000 less
than produced last year, hut 43.000.000
more thai the nverage of the preceding
five years. The umount forecast has
been exceeded four times In the last ten
years. The crop was adversely affected
by the drought prevailing over a large
portion of the corn belt, the greatest loss
being In Oklahoma, Kansas and Mis-,
sourl : Improvement occurred In the
' North Atlantic States and Iowa. The
t condition of the crop was more or less
critical on August 1 In many sections;
good rains would save the crop, whereaa
continued drought would seriously In
jurs It
"The price of corn to producer of
the United States advanced four cents
a bushel during the month, largely In
consequence of the reduction In condl-
tlon. and on August 1 averaged slightly
mor than a year ago. The quantity
exported Is relatively email, usually less
than 2 per cent. Last year's exports
were only about 40,000,000 bushels.
"Of the minor crops, potatoes made
little change during the last month and
-. foreran about an average crop. Bar
ley prospect declined about ton million
bushels, forecasting 195,000,000 42,
000,000 leas than last year's big crop,
hut 9,000,000 more than the five years
uvrrpge crop.
'Tobacco prospects Improved slightly
nnd fofeunst 1,197.000.000 pounds, more
than ever produced In one year. Apples
and reaches botn declined in prospect
during the month. Apples forecast a
fairly good crop, considering the aggre
pate of the United States, but pcichei
will be a rather short crop."

Alter opening steady at an advance of I
DOlht to a decline of 7 nnlnta. tirleea turned
easier. An Idea that prices had reached a
nsnrerotialr high level and that spinners
could not be expected to anticipate needs
ut such flfures was doubtless a fsctor on
the decline, which carried prices some 10
to li points under last nlrht a rioting, Cot.
Inn was tradlly enough absorbed on a scale
down to cause sellers for a reaction some
uneasiness, snd a renewal ol bull support
ws followed by an urgent buying move
ment during the middle of the day.
t Walt Street and Western Interests were
buyers on this advance, while early local
sellers covered as prices worked Into new
high ground for the movement, with Jan
uary selling up to 14.77, or practically 31i-2

break of last February Demand then slack

12 points In ths late trading.
while some of the trade houses were re
ported buyers, the most general Idea ex
pressed by spot brokers on the floor was that
the trade had practically withdrawn for the
time being, and that nothlnc more than a
hand to mouth demand could be expected
from spinners, until more was known of the
new croii outlook. There wss nothing to In
dime Southern selling against prospective

evidently rendered sellers csutlous. Private

If they are a "tabor union." They don't
like that appellation.
An unlucky reporter called the dels'.
Katlon that yesterday In talking with
some of them and Oscar of the Waldorf
looked at him as he might look at a
waiter who put champasjne glasses on
the table when claret cup was to be
served.
"Labor union!" gasped the secretary
of the organisation. "Do you know
how much some of these gentlemen get
a year? They get $10,000, $20,000
$23,000. He," nodding to Oscar of the
Waldorf, "has a salary larger than
many banker. We are no labor union I"
Whatever the organisation Is, it haa
some Important matter on hand. Chief
among them 1 the settling of the ser
vant problem. This can be done. Presi
dent (llrurd of the association pointed
out, by putting up more hotels. Hotel
are Increasing now very rapidly, he said
In his annual address yesterday morn
ing, and as homes gradually disappear
and the people of the nation take up
their abode in huge hotel the servant
worry will cease tt vex women.
"Consequently, to have the situation In
hand," he sr'd, "we must boom our asso
ciation. There are 630,000 hotels in the
United State nnd Canada, and to con
trol matters we ahould have at least
10,000 of the purchasing agents of these
hotel as our member. The work of
training the servant of the country
must be kept In our hands."
Commissioner Joseph J. liartlgan 01
the Bureau of Weights and Measures
addressed the convention at the morn
ing session, representing the Mayor, who
as too busy to accept the invitation or
the stewards. The Commissioner thought
to please his hearers by telling them that
the street car strike was settled and
they wouldn't be Inconvenienced In get
ting about the city, but they were not
Interested.
"Our delegates and their families
would not be Inconvenienced unless the
taxlcab chauffeurs should strike," said
'resident Olrard.
A slight damp fell upon the spirits of
the stewards In the afternoon, but It was
only the rain. They went on a picnic to
wetxela a rove just in time to eaten tne
hardest downpour. Oscar of the Wal
dorf, an host, was greatly grieved at the
Inhospltallty of the weather, and prom
ised better treatment of the 360 dele
gates and their families to-night, when
they go to Coney Island.

Two porters stood sweating by the

'How long you been here, BI1IT" asked

'Oh, 'bout three months."
'Let's go on strike like the street car
men. Bill. It's too hot to work, and
might as well get a raise now Instead of
waiting five years for It."
So twelve of the fourteen porters In

Harney Smith heard their demand and
told them to go out foi a cooling drink
while he reported the matter to the Stock
exchange manager, lie nad tneir pay
rolls ready for them when they returned
at 2 o clock. '
The unchangeable rule of the stock

that shall receive a raise of IS. Of the
twelve who struck eight had been at
