These pictures constitute a unique photographic survey of the French bom
bardment of Auberive and its effects. Auberive was part of the famous Hinden
burg line. The above photograph was taken from a French airplane. The French
artillery fire was directed by airplanes. After the capture of the village photographs
were taken of the shattered German defences to check up the accuracy of the French
aviators. The result is a series of remarkably precise and enlightening comparisons
between the later photographs and the aerial view. The points photographed are in
dicated by numbers. The French trenches are in the foreground. The German
trenches are seen in front of Auberive.
