THE SUN, ' SUNDAY, JUNE 9, 1918; ' ?4 15 j STEADINESS NOTED IN COTTON MARKET Short Session Closes at Advance .of 27 to SO Foints. The cotton market was steady yes terday. There was enough realizing to cause some little Irrcgillarlty, but shorts teemed relatively motVj anxious to oven up for over the week ehel and the mar liet closed at a td advance of 27 to 36 points. July waa relatively Arm during the earlier tradlng-but later tho ad vance waa ltd by October, which teemed to be Influenced by apprehen sion of crop complaints from the East ern belt. In tome sections the wet weather has started the growth of grass and the situation as to labor makes the trade fearful of damage from this cause, should tho wet weather con tinue. Scattering complaints were said to be already coming- in from certain sections oris Saturday and there wns trade buying of new crop months as well at covering; The market opened at a decline of 1 to 10 points under realltlng, but the comparatively light offerings were soon absorbed. Both Liverpool and New Orleans were buyers of July, supposed to be undoing; straddles or covering (ledges, and the renewed strength of that position helped the early rally. Later tho July premium narrowed again, with the position closing only 210 points above October, compared with 218 points at the close on Friday. Closing prices were within a point or two of the best. Reports that the conference) of bank ing and cotton trade Interests held here during the morning had recommended the general use of trade acceptances and that the Government favors the propostlon were considerably discussed. In a general way It Is believed that this plan would facilitate the financing of the new crop, and that its Influence would consequently be favorable to prices. No change was reported In the "ocean freight situation, and weekly reviews of crop prospects were quite as favorable as our trade had been led to expect by dally advices. The goods market re mained firm, with talk of price fixing or tome other sort of Government control much In evidence.
