The report that an armistice lnd been signed with CJerminy turned what oth erwise would have been n comparatively tame affair on the Stock Exchange yes terday Into one of the most enthusiastic in history and at tho close" tho whole Inanclal district was In n pandemonium of excitement. OffUlal confirmation of the story was lacking, and toward tho 'loso. whlih was a half hour earlier '112 I than usual. Washington authorities cast J92H AVI 7J 971,! What happened on the Stock Exchange was mild In comparison with tho wild domonatrationsalaewhere In the finan cial community. Indeed, after the re port had once gained circulation Wall Street might Just as well have closed up shop for the day and begun a real cele bration of victory for all the business that was done afterward. As a matter i or.ract n majority or the large houses did close earlier than usual. So did the Stock Exchange The governors, recog nizing tho spirit of the occasion, de cided to close the market at 2 o'clock, but at the last .minute It was found that til members could not be notified In 60 95 95V4 15 72 67 97V4 S8 106 110 61 79 69 101 1 61 Vi 102 62 22 42 151 till 24 23V4 G8 CVi 2 27 84 Vi loavi 101 62 47V4 97 97 85 43 15 77 45 59 41V4 79 Vi 60 102 6V4 46 46 93 100 89 Vi 112 103 10SV4 98 51V4 V6 "96 15 72 Ti 68 93 88Vi 108 112 65 79Vi 69 104 Vi 1 63 103 Vi 62 U 23 Vi 43Vi 160 11 Vi 24Vi Broad 1262 Is the trlephonr number of the Statistical and Informition depart ment of Hughes & filer. So far as the ex change was concerned, however, the closing did not come In time to prevent the'rmrket from showing what may be expected of securities In case the reoort Is confirmed. There was a wild rusn to buy stocks In the last half hour, during which the ralla were carried forward with great buoyancy and enthusiasm, while the war stocks and other special Issues wero neglected. The expression of course was tempered to some extent by a conservative regard for the money situation, but this seemed to have less effect on prices than In tho case of pro ceding sessions this week. The announcement of the armistice came at noon. Tho Street was at tlrst Inclined to go slow, and for nn hour or 00 thereafter' the market turned heavy, prices reaching the lowest levels of the day. This was followed, how ever, by a firmer tendency all around, and when the market had recovered Its bearings prices started forward throughout the best part of the list, first rather slowly and finally with great enthu.ilnsm The greater part of the strength centered In the rails, as waB to be expected. The low pna rails and peace specialties partlclvatcd in theJ movement as did the copper, but the steels and war stocks were heavy. Bonds were active and strong, particularly the foreign government Issues, which In a few cases made new highs 'for the year. With the financial district absorbed In poace topics much of the recent Interest In the money situation subsided some what. Rates were unchanged. There was another meeting of the money com mittee yesterday, but In the excitement over the armistice report Wall Street showed little Interest In It. Nor was there much Interest evidenced In the withdrawal of approximately J100.000. 000 of proceeds of the Initial payment on the Fourth Liberty Loan from New York banks. There was very little of Interest In the foreign exchange mar ket. Weakness of International Mercantile -Marino was attributed to rumors that the company had n plan which called for payment of tho back dividends of 67 per cent, on the preferred stock on the Instalment plan. This story waa characterized by a director ns pure imagination, and P. A. S. Franklin, presi dent of the company, declared that no plan has Been formulated for tho pay ment of these arrcar payments to pre ferred shareholders, this being a bridge that the directors would have to come to before they would cross IL Tho heav iness of the shares was also due In part to considerable profit taking by specula tors, who preferred to reinvest' In other speculative Issues that have lagged be hind the balance of the list. War Order Canccllnilona. Tho first thought regarding tho steel Issues taken In connection with the probability of early termination of hos tilities has to do with the cancellation of war orders for steel. It Is well known that there Is a pentup domestic demand for steel, but lt Is an open ouestlon as to whether the domestic trade will bid for steel at current price levels. Be this as It may there will be n necessary hiatus between the cancellation of war orders and the booking of new domestic orders. Thero wero reported yesterday many cancellations of orders In the steel In dustry These applied particularly to war Roods such ns barbed wire. In nd dl'Ion heavy cancellations aro expected for shell steel. This situation was ro 'lected yesterday In the steel Issues, which apparently discounted the Imme diate future, affected as It Is by the scarcity of labor. Those who are bear ish In s'eel stocks also expressed the opinion that prices of steel products will drop before there Is any alleviation of taxation or nny miterlal decline In the price of labor. If this view Is borne out profits will inevitably shrink. The Steel Corporation board reflected Its Judgment of the Immediate future by reducing tho extra dividend on the com mon irom 3 per cent, to per cent. . .665s . .67 . .OOI4 . .66 . .6014 . .60 . .66l . .661a . 117 . .67 . 6N4 . .67 . .6714 07 adj 6. . 1 . . . , 6. . . , 3. . . , 7 6. . . , 10 . . . 10. . . 2 0 .7434 ThlrdAv adl Sa .71 2 3.114 ,7li 0 36 .74 ThlrdAv ref 4i .76 3 A8Ir 74I4 Un l'ac 10-yr 75 . .747s SIL A SanFrau inc MldraieStevlSs 4 88I3 A . . . 90 . .40 . ..iota . .601 4 .5013 iii33a ..103 4 . 101 . .103Vl . .HWVi . 10.1l2 . .103 4 .104 51 13 Unlonl'adtlc 4s .l0m C A O ct 4Ws HI Cent 44 INI .11X11 1 22 8.1 Irt 1 m :ia,IA'.Mton8J'nCcarf8'4,, !S!.. lv;. 10.;.;.. sua .w.,fi 4UU.I, 20 ...... 85 ..1IIU ,.1018 . lOHa . lllV 1017,, ..101 ..10l4 . 1(114 2,1. . 3. . 10. . 12. . A conference of the utmost Importance to American corporations doing business In Mexico will be held at 11 o'clock this momlmr at which It Is expected the oil land dl.'putc and the question of Mexi can taxation of American corporations will be settled amicably and favorably. A conference of the lawyers was held yesterday nnd lt Is anticipated that their recommendations. If accepted by the of ficials and directors concerned, will be highly favorable to tho American cor porations. On the basis of these con ferences there was a double stimulus to the rise of nearly 3 points In Ameri can Smelters, 12 In Mexican Petrole um. 4 In Texas Company and 1 In Southern Pacific. The earlv termln.-i. tlon of the European war should bring about an equally speed? termination of the difficulties with Mexico. In fact tho resumption of actiie business be tween tho United states and Mexico mould benent a number of corporations iiui im-muro in .me auove list. To lleurulntf Ice lltitlnesi. Reasons for the strength of stocks of Ice eompanles came to light yesterday when It waa learned that the producers of that product have formulated a plan for the regulation of both tho harvesting or natural ice nnd the production rr r. A. S. Franklin, president of tho In ternational Mercantllo Marino Company, following a meeting of tho board of di rectors, yesterday raid If the proposition mado by a eyndlcato of tlrltlali Intercity for all tho ehlps of tho Drltlxh companies Is accepted It would bring the total caih In the treasuries of those eompanle' up to between 26.000.000 and til 000.000. Mr.' Franklin Raid thot Harold A San derson, chairman of the board a well as chairman of tho Brtt'sh comnanln'. re ceived the proposition from the Ilr'tWi Interests ond laid It before the irrcnr of the International Mcrcan'l'e Marine Company yesterday for the flr-t time. Continuing Sir. KrnnKiin snia: , 'Th's Is the first diy tho il'rcctorn havo had put before them anvthlng I'ke a enncro'e proportion that had been made to tho directors of the Rrltl'h com panies for tho sale of the ships "f tho companies The matter was eoislrterfd and generally spenklng the deal Is net an unfavorable one. There nro. how ever, three, four or five things that have got to be Ironed out. "Tho question now Is whether It wows be wle tn have the. Rrltlh company ac cent the proposition. If It ! intid there would bo betweon 26,000,000 and 27.000 000 In tho treasuries of tho Hr' ish companies, which are owned by t'- j Tn'ernatlonal Mercantllo Jlarlne Con pany. The deU would not dispose or any - the American property of tho Interna tiona Mercantile Marine, nnd invonoi the sale of approximately 760.000 tons ' ships under British registry. Sale i ' the ships would leavo the America companies with nlno ehlps and two fly'.nt; the Belftlan flag." Mr. Franklin said distribution of enhh In the treasuries of the British com panies was a bridge that would bo crossed when reached. Ho said that a present the compmy did not have any plans relative to the disbursement or ti..i cash and did not have anv plan for tho payment of the back dividends of 7 per cent, on the preferred stock of tlt In ternational Mercantllo Marine Compiny. Mr. Franklin expects the directors to reach a decision some time next week In that case a clrcu'.ir would be sunt to the company's stockholders and a sp - clal meeting called to act upon the de cision of the board. Completion of the transaction. In ndded. would leave the American com pany Just as It wyis before, except that It would be shorn nf the British shins Mr. Franklin believes the outlook "f the American merchant marine Is very good, and that Americans should con tinue to cortstruct new ships.
