port had once gained circulation Wall
Street might Just as well have closed up
shop for the day and begun a real cele
bration of victory for all the business
that was done afterward. As a matter i

losing until 2:30. So far as the ex
change was concerned, however, the
closing did not come In time to prevent
the'rmrket from showing what may be
expected of securities In case the reoort
Is confirmed. There was a wild rusn to
buy stocks In the last half hour, during
which the ralla were carried forward
with great buoyancy and enthusiasm,
while the war stocks and other special
Issues wero neglected. The expression
of course was tempered to some extent
by a conservative regard for the money
situation, but this seemed to have less
effect on prices than In tho case of pro
ceding sessions this week.
The announcement of the armistice
came at noon. Tho Street was at tlrst
Inclined to go slow, and for nn hour
or 00 thereafter' the market turned
heavy, prices reaching the lowest levels
of the day. This was followed, how
ever, by a firmer tendency all around,
and when the market had recovered Its
bearings prices started forward
throughout the best part of the list, first
rather slowly and finally with great
enthu.ilnsm The greater part of the
strength centered In the rails, as waB
to be expected. Umlei the .leadership
of Southern Pacific all of the old lino
Investment lames. Including Union Pa
c'fic New York Central. Northern Pa
cific, LehlKh Valley. Pennsylvania,
Great Northern preferred and Reading,
all Improved and In some Instances
reached new high ground for the cur
rent year. The low pna rails and
peace specialties partlclvatcd in theJ
movement as did the copper, but the
steels and war stocks were heavy. Bonds
were active and strong, particularly
the foreign government Issues, which In
a few cases made new highs 'for the
year.
With the financial district absorbed In
poace topics much of the recent Interest
In the money situation subsided some
what. Rates were unchanged. There
was another meeting of the money com
mittee yesterday, but In the excitement
over the armistice report Wall Street
showed little Interest In It. Nor was
there much Interest evidenced In the
withdrawal of approximately J100.000.
000 of proceeds of the Initial payment
on the Fourth Liberty Loan from New
York banks. There was very little of
Interest In the foreign exchange mar
ket. Sterling and francs continued Arm,
the former making a slight advance,
but the remainder of the list was vir
tually the same as on the preceding day.

war. Money restrictions on tho volume
of speculation were forgotten and In tho
five and one-half hours of trading ap
proximately 1,200,000 shares -changed

with amazement, and obviously for a
brief space of time, entlmated at en
minutes, they did not know what to do.

stood still but came to life when the
bedlam of nolso outMde In the narrow
streets made Itself felt, Tho flfrt Im
pulse was to buy rails. In tho tuoughts
of every ono these leaueo assumed pre
mier Importance. While tho rails were
the first selection, attention was quickly
turned to the oils, motors, tobacco, gas,
rubber and other public utility and In
dustrial preferred stocks. Bonds also
came In for their sharo of buying. The
gains tn rails ranged from 1 to 6
points. Tho entire active list of Issues
expected to benefit from peace moved
upward actively from n fraction to 6
points, while Mexican Petroleum jumped
upward for a net gain of 12 points.
What had been expected to be nn un
important scsElon was changed ih the
twinkling of an eye to-a. sceno of lndo
scrlbable enthusiasm.

Weakness of International Mercantile
-Marino was attributed to rumors that
the company had n plan which called
for payment of tho back dividends of
67 per cent, on the preferred stock on
the Instalment plan. This story waa
characterized by a director ns pure
imagination, and P. A. S. Franklin, presi
dent of the company, declared that no
plan has Been formulated for tho pay
ment of these arrcar payments to pre
ferred shareholders, this being a bridge
that the directors would have to come
to before they would cross IL Tho heav
iness of the shares was also due In part
to considerable profit taking by specula
tors, who preferred to reinvest' In other
speculative Issues that have lagged be
hind the balance of the list.
War Order Canccllnilona.
Tho first thought regarding tho steel
Issues taken In connection with the
probability of early termination of hos
tilities has to do with the cancellation
of war orders for steel. It Is well known
that there Is a pentup domestic demand
for steel, but lt Is an open ouestlon as to
whether the domestic trade will bid for
steel at current price levels. Be this as
It may there will be n necessary hiatus
between the cancellation of war orders
and the booking of new domestic orders.
Thero wero reported yesterday many
cancellations of orders In the steel In
dustry These applied particularly to
war Roods such ns barbed wire. In nd
dl'Ion heavy cancellations aro expected
for shell steel. This situation was ro
'lected yesterday In the steel Issues,
which apparently discounted the Imme
diate future, affected as It Is by the
scarcity of labor. Those who are bear
ish In s'eel stocks also expressed the
opinion that prices of steel products
will drop before there Is any alleviation
of taxation or nny miterlal decline In
the price of labor. If this view Is borne
out profits will inevitably shrink. The
Steel Corporation board reflected Its
Judgment of the Immediate future by
reducing tho extra dividend on the com
mon irom 3 per cent, to
per cent.
