I'onKcroitlam In buying- tor Immediate needs as well as extreme caution In the natter of purchases for the future has been brought about by tho rapid march of events in Europe. The past week !pw a general narrowing of trade, us not alone to peace rumors, but also' (o the effects of the Influents, epidemic nnd the election, according to Brad .(reel' Weekly Trade Ret-late, This re view, calling attention to cancellation of orders and the holding up of plant ex tensions, which are mainly due to the situation In Europe, says In parti Trade continues to taper off, rumors ot peace, effects of Influenza, the clcc- Mon holiday and light buying resulting from warm weather having repressed iterations, and at tho same time there s 1 strongly defined tendency to mark lime while trying to sketdh put the probable breadth ot readjustments to follow the. peace now apparently In sight. In fact the roseate outlook In Europe. vlth premature reports ot Germany having accepted terms submitted by the allied Powers, has already taken form In the unacttlement of grain and 'otton prices. In cancellation ot some orders In tho holding up of contem plated plant extensions and In higher prices for securities. " Increase In Supplies. "Economizing and the absenco of vounp men from the list of buyers also nave made for some Increase In supplies of merchandise, and In view of tho In evitable defeit of Germany. Irrespective of what that country may do in guib illng over terms, the general disposition Is to shy away from placing orders when the potentials suggest lower prices, at least until readjustments have been worked out. Incidentally, many fnanu 'acturers are averse to accepting orders from customers who later may deem It expedient to enter cancellations and therefore orders from only" the strongest customers aro belnr taken on. With so xany counteracting Influences, buying Is onfinert" to Immediate requirements. In which regard movements have been fa rored only In those sections where the w father has turned cold." Increased cancellation of orders Is to he expected tvltn tlie rapid turn of events in the war. Bays Hun's Kevicw, and this ! an added reason why buying Is being none with extreme, regard for the re adjustments that must be made In trade with the return of peace. In this cop- r.ccimn u un a pays ; "With the Bwlflly moving events In Europe tho realities of economic read J'tstment hale been brought sharply to he foreground, and tho process of tran Uion to a pcaco basis has' already be S'jti In porno branches of business. What Till be tho ultimate result of the hansed International situation Is large y problematical, but the Immediate ef 'ect In trad and Industry ha's"tceu one i' growing hesitation anl caution among buyers and a disposition to await tur ner developments. Cancellation of Orders. "That cancellations of ordcre, lately appearing In several quarters, will he orae moro frequent and general Is a .-early recognized probability, and some Interests aro prompted to defer new com mitments as tar an possible In antlclpa 1 .on. ot downward revisions ot prices. A recent significant feature, hlnhly sug gestive of future conditions. Is the fact tnat some salesmen who have long been absent from the road are again starting out for their res,p;ctlie territories, and indications multiply of a willingness amons producer." to book forward con tracts. In n usual year there would be nearly 95 per cent of the crop available for husking, so that the amount of merchantable com this tea son is not far under 1,700,000,000 bushels because of Its quality being 3.4 per cent higher than the average. Another feature this season is the fact that there aro on farms approximately 119,000,000 bushels of old corn, com pared with only 14,000,000 the previous year, which will gtvo further assurance of an adequate corn crop this year, fol lowing the fears expressed during the summer that the outturn might not reach much over 2,500,000,000 bushels. In regard to the corn area tor the coming season very little can be said yet except that early Indications are for another decrease in the amount of land given over to corn as a result of big plantings of wheat rye and other crops. Various officials In the country are de sirous of seeing a liberal corn area and substantial feed crops In order to further tncrease'the supplies of hogs, meats and fats, and with the realization that re munerative prices are about the best In centive for enlarged plantings of any crop, there need be no surprise at the dissatisfaction expressed recently when corn prices were dropping seriously. As regards tho new winter wheat crop, the soil has been greatly benefited by rains, which have fallen over the major section of tho belt For a time there was a delay In the completion of fall seeding, but latest advices Indicate that such operations were resumed and the stort of the crop on Its bti acreage is viewed as one of the best on record.
