The Hlndenburg Line, as the baseball fans have nicknamed the Cincinnati In fleld not through any unkindly allusion to the Teutonic ancestry of Daubert, Rath. Kopf and Groh. who compote It, but In true American and aportsmanly acknowledgment of the strength of the German front that only the Yankees could smash held for eleven long, pal pitating Innings at Ebbets Field yester day, only to be ripped asunder by a fierce Brooklyn bombardment In the twelfth. Through the gap charged the Dodgers and snatched a 2 to 1 victory from tha very Jaws of defeat. For eleven heartbreaking Innings, clus tered with crises, tense with thrills that had tha Brooklyn fans tumbling from tha heights of hope to the depths of despair, only to bound up to the pin nacled peaks again. Leon Cadore and Dutch Reuther crossed shoots In as keen a pitchers' duel as ever tried the heart of man. Reuther pitched splendid ball; Cadore van better. But the mound wizardry of Cadore repeatedly was Jeopardised by threatened cracking of Ma defence, a cracking that was all the more Immi nent through the soggy field and the wet ball, conditions that bred fumbles and parented wild throws. For eleven fiercely contested frames, however. Reuther and his stonewall defence and Cadore and hie masterly pitching kept the plate from being sullied with the foot of a hostile foam an. The Palpitating; Twelfth. Came the twelfth with Defeat's leer suddenly being replaced by Victory's winsome smile. With two down In the twelfth and the teams still deadlocked tn a scoreless tie. Jake Daubert, erstwhile Dodger, sent a long triple booming to the right centre field fence. It was the first real healthy rap registered by I he Reds off Cadores' baffling shoots. Wltn Daubert on third and two down Brooklyn fans were ner vous, but hopeful, for three times pre viously In the fray first in the second, then In the seventh and still again In the tenth had Cincinnati worked a runner around to third only to have Cadore bar the ecorlng way. With the "They shall not pass" spirit of the French at Verdun. Cadore for eleven Innings had blocked the way; Brooklyn fans looked for him to hold the bridge again. Teon undoubtedly would have done so had not fate and the wet hall Interfered. Groh sent an easy roller to Olson. The wet ball slipped In Ivy'a grasp and he threw low to first. Konetehy, however, coolly picked the ball out of the dirt, snd then Just as Umpire McCormack's arm was Jerking up in the gesture that meant "out" and no Cincinnati score Big Ed dropped the bail' On tha error charged to Olson Daubert crossed tha plate with the run that at the time appeared to have nullified all "f Cadore's masterly pitching. Y. In capturing the coveted honor Giebel defeated three of hts Mercury Foot team mates. The national ten mile champion had things all hla own way, leading from start to finish and winning by five jra.es OVW Paul E. Chace, the former Berkeley-Irving schoolboy champion. For the greater part of the distance Chace kept within striking distance of Giebel hut weakened in the drive down the home water and allowed I,eo to shake him off. Clarence E. Ross, who also represents Erasmus Hall High School In scholastic events, finished third, less than a yard behind Chace. John Newnon. who last Friday won the Junior national mile championship swim at Lake Hopatcong, was fourth. Newnon was never a se rious contender and never swam better than in fourth place. The other starters were Louis J. Jones and his brother, Willis If., both representing the Compo Life Guards. They finished fifth and sixth. A Roach Conrse. Giebel was clocked in 8 minutes 10 3-5 seconds, which is 22 seconds slower than the record. That Giebel swam the dis tance In as fast time as he did was a rsra feat of watermanship, because the storm lashed the water Into turbulence. The swimmers In all the events were forced to buck a heavy tide, which at times carried them out of the course. Despite the heavy downpour of rain which continued from the opening event until the final a big crowd with um brellas raised stood on the beach and watched the contests. The other title event, the women's Junior national fancy high diving cham pionship, went to Miss Alice Lord of the Women's Swimming Association of New York. Miss Lord performed In splendid style, rolling up the fine score of 118.11 points. The contestants in this event dove from an eight footplatform. with Miss Lord easily excelling tho rest of the field. Miss Meany Second. Miss Heler.
