Again yesterday the stock market save
an excellent account of Itself In face
of the uncertainties of Uio labor situa
tion. Its. composure was even more strik
ing than Its action on Thursday, lnas-.
much as overnight despatches from
Washington practically destroyed all
hope that extenuating circumstances
might bo found to avoid a general tleup
ot the kon and steel Industry. There was
Intermittent selling of standard stocks
again throughout the session, but just
as has been tho case -for the last week,
the flnanc'ai community seemed to have
settled down to tho opinion that If a
rest of strength must come between labor
leaders and the Steel Corporation It
might Just as well como now as at any
other time. That stocks did not sell off
tinder theso circumstances was remark
able, and tho only explanation of tho
underlying strength was that stocks, havo
nce again drifted back Into strong
hands In the process of readjustment In
.he last few weeks.
There were rumors toward the closing
that tho labor leaders had decided to
postpone tile strtko until after tho con
ference; In Washington next month, but
these were not credited In most quarters.
The best opinion seemed to be that there
Is very llttlo chance of avoiding the
str'ke now and. in view of this, dis
cussion Is now centring, so far as the
financial district is concerned, on the,
probable outcomo of the struggle. In
most quarters the view prevails Uiat If
the strike la called according' to scheduls
the Steel Corporation and other corpora
t!ons affected undoubtedly wlirshut down
their plants Immediately and make no,
.attempt at operations. It Is the opinion
of the Wall Street district that If this
Is thcrrase, the strike will not last very
long. Howover, steel officials are not
jverlooklng the possibility of a long
drawn out battlo, but, even If this proves
to bo true, the thing that makes the
situation look so favorable, from the
corporation's point of view. Is that the
steol Industry has never been so well
prepared for a strike, In a financial
sense. In tho history of the Industry.
It Is contended that plants could easily
be shut down a month without Impair
ing their financial positions.
What made yesterday's market even
more Impressive was tho strength of the
steel stocks themselves. Desplto the
beavy professional selling, all of the
Important Issues held their ground re-
markably well. Their fluctuations were
not especially spectacular nor were the
net changes at the closing. It was the
specialty stocks which provided most of
the fireworks. All of the tobacco issues.
United Retail Stores In particular, were
In excellent demand, and so were some
of the motors. There was another sen
sational rise in Fisher Body. Savage
Arms was another exception to the
general rule, closing with a gain of atiout
6 points. The marine stocks were
strong and Eowere most of the equip
ments. .As a matter of fact there were
no very weak spots anywhere In the list.
There were sinking spells, of course.
Just as there have been all during the
lastaweek. In all of the standard 'indus
trials; but Just when the market looked
the weakest new buying always made Its
appearance, with the result that stocks
generally experienced upturns all tho
way around.
There was no change In the money
situation. Call money loaned all day
around 6 per cent, notwithstanding tho
extra heavy demand at the end ot the
week to carry stocks over the period of
suspended animation. However, most of
the arrangements for the tax payments
next Monday have now been completed
so that from now on It Is not expected
that there will be any further flurries In
the money market. The foreign ex
change market was weak again with
sterling and francs continuing their de
cline. Francs were especially weak, go
ing down to another new low record.
Swiss francs alBO lost ground during the
day. The rest of the market, however,
was quiet and not vcy far removed from
the, preceding day's closing. Bank clear
ings at fifty leading cities for the week
were 7',66B,337, a gain of 19.8 per cent
over last week and of 22.3 per cent ovr
the corresponding week a year igo.
Outside of New York city the total was
13.349,383,000. an Increase of 21.7 per
cent over last week and 23.7 per cent
over the same week a year ago.

A Savnpre Move.
Savage Arms sprany yesterday Into
prominence w.th a rise of 7 points,
of which gain all but 1 points was
maintained to the close, and Information
passed around publicly and privately
was to the effect that the directors at
their meeting In tho early part of next
month would declares an extra dividend
In cash of substantial amount On
previous reports, the stock sold as high
as 93, but tho failure of the board to
act at tho July meeting caused a reac
tion. Now It Is said that tho directors
had no Intention of declaring the extra
d'vldend at the July meeting and that
action positively would be taken during
next month. The earnings for the first
half of he current calendar year amount
ed to 216 a share and In the last

the common. An analysis of
balance sheet for December 31, 1918,
showed net quick assets equal to $170
a share for the common after deducting
the par value of the outstanding first
and second preferred. In 1918 the
company wrofe down the plant property,

Fisher Body.
Tho bright shining star In the Stock
Exchange firmament yesterday was
Fisher Body, which on a turnover of
less than 4,000 shares, sold up to 135,
an advance of 22 points from the last
preceding day's close, and finished the
session at 133, a net gain of 20 points
for the day. The buying was reported
to come from Interests cry close to the
management If not actually Identified
with it and to be based on advance
knowledge of Important developments to
bo announced soon. In one quarter it
was hinted that a very substantial txtra
cash dividend would be declared bp
Fisher Body directors within a very
short time. Darnings are said to be
runnls; at the highest point in tho his
tory of the concern, tho business of the
company expanding In direct proportion
to the Improvement In tho general auto
mobile business. Tbe story which has
been going 'round the Street for several
weeks to the effect that General Motors
Interests were getting control of Fisher
Body with a view of adding it to the
General Motors organization was scouted
yesterday In authoritative quarters. It
was pointed out that the large part of
the buying was being done by Interests
very, closely Identified with the Fisher
Body organization.

It was learned yesterday In official
quarters that an exceedingly Important
meeting of tho United Retail Stores di
rectors has been called for next Monday,
after which some announcement of great
Importance would be made. It was ilo-
sMared that the buying, which came yes
terday Into the stock just after noon
and sent the price to a top figure of
101 for a net gain of nearly 5 points,
was almost solely from Inside clrc cs.
The activity and great strength dis
played yesterday by Lorillard all
'rough the session gave color to the
story that this company Is to become a
part of the United Retail Stores organi
zation In tho near future. The rumor
to this effect has been going about thf
financial district for several days, some
times being heard In supposedly author!
tatlve quarters. The basis of exchanged Alb & Busq
of Lorillard utock for Retail Stores,
should the plan be carried out has been
.cported variously fill tho way from two
and a quarter shares of Retail for one of
Lorillard, to three of Retail for one .of
Lorillard. More than 6,000 shares of

prices ranging from 224 to 231, the

It has been learned also that the man
agement of United Retail Stores has unj.
der consideration a proposition for the
offering of stock In the corporation to Its
employees. The United Cigar Stores
Ccrporation, recently taken over by Be
ta 1 Stores, Eomo time ago offered Its
stock to employees, and practically all of
tho offering was eagerly subscribed. In
a letter which the company has written
to the employees. It was made plain that

chass stock of tho corporation, details

tho date of the offering, the terms-of

Porphyries Annroat Production.
Tho preliminary production figures of
tho four porphyry copper companies Is
sued yesterday showed slight gains In
two of tho concerns and corresponding
declines in tho other two, compared with
the last preceding month's figures. Utah,
tho largest of the group, reported a total
Production of 8,(140,000 pounds, against
8,406,000 In July. This Increase was
more than offset by the declino In the
production of Chino. which was 3,321,867
pounds, against 8,524,331 pounds In the
last previous month. Tho otlvjr produc
tion gain was reported by Ray Consoli
dated, which turned out a total of 8.S9B.

compared with the last preceding month's
figures. Nevada, tho fourth member of
the group, did not operate at all during-
August Decause or a strike which forced
a complete shutdown. The production

story. Nearly everywhere the chief com
plaint Is of Inability to secure enough
car's with which to meet requirements,
demand outstripping supply, and now
and then reports are heard of premiums
being offered for special deliveries. With
few exceptions manufacturers are fully
sold up, many of them from three to sit
months ahead, and efforts to extend
productive facilities through plant en
largements or new factory construction)
are not uncommon. The unusual de
mand for both new and used cars has
naturally stimulated business In tires and
other accessories and some leading tire
concerns aro said to be so overwhelmed
with orders as to find allotment of out
puts necessary. The trade is generally
optimistic regarding the future and ap
preciable price reductions are considered

Optimism More Pronounced.

"With the advance of the fall buying
season and the activity engendered by
active purchasing by retailers from
Western, Northwestern and Southern
Jobbers there is a rather mora pro
pounced tinge of optimism In the tradt
