exactly what firms cannot be ascortained,
n all who are intcrestcJ are very reticcnt.
The assignees are tteyiU 0. Taft, Francis
W. Carpenter and Kugcne W. Masen. A
meeting of the creditors has been called te
dcoide upon proper action, The uews of
the failuie was te sorae extent anticipated.
Could the llrm have worked eir its surplus
stock at any reasonable profit the calamity
would have been averted, but cotton
goods have been a drug in thu market for
a long time.
The firm was eitabllsktu many jears
age by Ames 1). Smith, new deceased, and
his brother, J. Y, Smith, under the title
of A. 1). ii J. Y. Smith is Ce. Later it
was found advisable te divide the property
aud the business was carried en ahme by
A.D. Smith, under the present firm name,
until his death, in 1870 At that time the
firm was reported very wealthy and Mr.
Smith's individual property v,as estimated
at$l,000,000. His sons, A. I). bmlth and
F. M Smith, and B. B. Adams constitute
the proseut firm and assumed control
under tinfavorable circumstances. The
firm has bcen rated very low by Brad Brad
streetn since 137!) aud, from the uatiue of
the assets, it Is feared that, the creditors
will rccoive but a moagre dividend.
