How was I worthy ao divine a loan,

Why want surh precious wood to make my cross,

THE SAILOR OR ARTIST.
BY MRS. M. A. DENNISON.
"There, now, I can breathe! " eielaimeJ a tall,
dark nun, aa he flung aside bis discolored brush
and leaned heavily against a lutiumo-'k, swung
up between decks on biaanl a man of war. "Be
blessed if I aunt a little proud of that," he mut

A soft, mellow 1 ght, streamed down the hatch
way, and glowed oter a aijuare surface on which
was sketcbeJ, witli vivid coloring, the tac of a
beautiful infant. It waa painted upon wood, the
surface of which waa smoothly finished and
polished; but one indifferent loart could not but
be startled at th exceeding perfection of the
coloring, the sweet repose of the features, and
an infant grace, which, diffused over the coun
tenance, gave it tiutretpt expression which the

"Now be off with you," he continued, placing

Meanwhile tltd boy who haj been rowed
as .tore, took but accustomed station on the
square. Through the long perspective street
the blua waters of the Mediterranean eould bi
faintly seen by the vivid sparkle of the sunshine
ou their calm surtoce. ror an hour tlie child
siood patiently with the picture in bis hand,
holding it forth to every passer by; some gazed
curiously, some started with astonishment, and
all appeared to be struck with the beauty of bis

Almost discourage J, little Kit, as be was call

go to his humble horn for bis ilinuer, but he
saw in the Utstanc a gentleman coming along,
accompanied by a beautiful young lady, and
feeling a sort of presentiment that they would be
customers, he placet! the picture in tb best

"Why, Henry," exclaimed the'sweet looking

The words of commendation froaa such

surely I should be a better man ; and with tlie
tender thought came tear to hi eyes. The
beautiful girl saw hia emotion and ahe looked
arnestly upon him aa if her heart was replying
to his thought; and then ahe exclaimed impul
sively, "if you ould only atndy and travel, why
don t you T you would most certainly make

Again that quick bright thought of intellect
passed over the sailor face, but he could not
reply; a strange emotion took from him the
power of speech ; bis blood coursed wild!
through his veins, and be was forced to steady
himself against the huge chest, that the quiver
ing of his frame might not be noticed. Mists
passed besore his eyes, succeeded by visions of
unearthly beauty, and then came burninj
thoughts of his own frequent disgrace. Mem-
oiy stirred up the yearnings of bis boyhood,
wjien he ao often sat in his lowly home and
dreamed of fame dreams that, when h told
them, awakened no sympathy, ouly derision and
erurl laugh and scorn, aud now an angel had
said to him, he had heard from the lips of the
purest and sweetest being he had ever seen,
" ton will mike a great painter, 1 am sure.
Faintly th voice commenting on his grace
ful perfoimances rang on his ears; almost un
consciously he listened as the Lieutenant took
some of his sketches, and told him he would
bring back whatever sum it obtained for tlieni;
his eye followed the sweet girlish figure of

high and glorious resolves into his strong heart,
and he was free from the thraldom of slavish
aprjftite forever.
All day Jack Holiday sat listles and appa
rently absorbed in thought, when not attemlioi
to his special duties. At snnset some ot tbi
crew were making preparations to go ashore
having obtained twenty-four hours rrlease.
"Where is Jack'" was the universal question,
as the boat was iu readiness, and ll.aliday did

families that had graced the splendid dinner

Oh! Jack Haiiday made a fanioua reajve
