THE YOUTHFUL VOYAGERS.
A Thrilling Story.
[Concluded]
Night dark, wild anil gloomy, night earn
down on the world of waters ; ami still the
terrible tornailo raged in all its hurrurs of wild
lightnin;, rain and thunder; and there, in their
frail 0n boat we will leave the hapless young
voyagers speeding on anJ away, right out into
the very heart of the Atlantic ocean. We will
bid them adieu and glance back to their home
to their fonJ mother rendered desolate in
heart by the dread calamity, that had fallen
upon Iter in the loss of her children.
At the moment when the children first em
barked, Mrs. Walton had glanced out towards
the cove, and for a few moments watched them
ith maternal pride as she saw them sailing to
and fro on the quiet waters of the bay; and
then some visitor called and she forgot her
children until just as the storm came down,
when a neighbor rushed in with the heart rend-
ing intelligence that the launch had been seen
only a few minutes previously, several miles
out at sea.
The first terrible shock almost killed her, but
soon rallying her woman a energy and moth
er's love, she rushed from her borne reoardless
of the furious storm, aroused her neighbors,
and besought them with all the ehxiuence call
ed np by tlie deep anguish of her riven heait,
to help recover her lost darlings.
mere was no vessel at Kockaway or raulk
ner'a Island, and to venture out to sea in such
a storm with such sny.ll erafi as were along
the shore, were worse than madness, and imme
diate despatches were sent to New York, not
only to the owners of tbe ship commanded by
(Japt. Walton, but tbe 1'ilots, and within an
hour after the news had reached the city, two
oftbestaunchest pilot boats, manned by extra
picked crew of gallant souls, were under
weigh, and speeding on their swift winged
course in search ol the ocean lost children
Sirs. Walton herself hastened mi the city to
urge with her presence and iufluence, more
pririnpt action ; but the vessels had been goue
an hour when she arrivrd, and so she repaired
to the house of Mr. AJvin, the owner ol tbe
ship her husband commanded, to await the re
turn of those who had so nobly gone foiih in
that mad storm in search of ber three darlings.
Leaving her there in a state of fevered anx
ety, hoping in tbe very teeth of despair, we.
too, will go forth into the wild, yelling gale, to
look upon a most sublime ocean picture.
It was an hoar past midnight, dark as the
deepest, gloomiest cells of an inquiritonal dun
geon, save when the vivid lightning's flash lit
up the Cimaaerian blackness with a glare rival
ing that of tbe brightest noon-day sun.
Some ninety miles to the eastward of Sandy
Hook, lay hove to a noble ship, inward bound
in one ol tbe most terrific gale that ever swept
along the northern coast ol America The gale
had just set in an hour before sundown, and
ever since dark the ship bad hove to under th
shortest poaaihie canvass, beading up south.'
west with tlie gale coming in violeut quall
out at due northwest.
" Do you think there's any danger to us or
the ship, captain t" inquired on of the three
passengers who stood near tbe commander of
the ibip. partly sheltered from the storm by
the projecting roof ot the round house.
Not the least Mr. Kinsley. You are as safe
as you would be at your own house in New
York. She is a bran new ship, and I had no
opportunity of trying her hove to before ; but
I am perfectly satisfied with her behavior. In
fact I never saw any craft conduct herself quite
as well in a hurricane like this. '
1 is a terrible night, however, and God help
those who may chance to be out on a smaller
craft than ours ! For the last hour I have been
thinking of my wife and children. My wife
will not aleep a wink to night she never can
sleep in a storm like this when I am not at
home. 1 was east away once on Long Island
shore, and not half a mile from home, in just
such a gale, only it waa from the aouthwest. I
would give a hundred dollar to be home only
for my wife' sake. But we must my God
what is that!"
A continuous flash of lightning lit np the sur
rounding space, and as darkness shut in again,
a unit but clear and distinct Ship Ahoy :
uttered by a female or a child, came down on
tbe blast from directly to windward.
A moment after fie bail was repeated, and
another flash of iightnin? revealed a boat dri
ving square down before the gale, and almost
under the ships quarter. Ere one could eount
five, tbe shrill, quivering cry came np from the
boat aa it shot past the ship not three fathom
clear ot tbe rudder.
Merciful heaven! There are three ehtl
dren in that boat !" yelWd Mr. Kinsly, who
with the captain, was peering over the taifrail.
a the boat flew past
"IlarJ up your helm, my man," said tbe
captain, in a voice aa calm as man' voice could
be, and then calling to the chief and third
mate, who were both on deck, he informed
them of the fact that a small open boat, with
three children in it, had just gone past and then
gave h orders.
" Mr. Canary please get oa the flying jib boom
and keep a look out for the boat and mind Mr.
Casssy, if we come up with it yon can lay tbe
hip so as to bring the boat close aboard on tbe
larboard side larboard, remember Mr. vaaiy
Don't for your lite make a mistike. Go for
ward now sir, and if we save these children,
five hundred dollxr shall he your reward.
Then turning to th chief mate km contin
ued : .
. "Mr. Windsor, yon will brace th yard all
square, which, without making any more sail
will send the ship through the water somewhat
raster than tbe boat ia going. Having don
this, rig single whip two of each on the lower
yards on tbe larboard aide. Place th block
far enough out tor tbe fall to drop about a
fathom clear of the ship, and reeve on good
snug gear, bring both ends on deck and th
other lead along for a foil, tation three good fel
lows at each. In the meantime I will get lha
hip steady before th wind, and Frank my
man, yon keep ber so. Don't let her yaw aa
inch! Steer her a if your very aool depended
on it, and within half an hour after tbe ahip
raache New York you shall have a hundred
dollars." .
"And now, Mr. Kinsly, yon wQIl please caD
npon the second mate and all the gentlemen
passengers, I want them to stand by the whip
in order to assist the sailors, if nee. wary. We
must saw those children, and do it, too, with
out coming in contact with the boat, as that
would be instant destrnction to it and tbem in
such i sea."
All ready the whip, sir I" eame fromltlie
mat, and at that moment the third mate's
voire rang out from ihe jib boom end, " Boat
right ahead ; steady aa you go !"
Now, tben, my lads, who II go into the run
ning bowlines with me, and stand by to pick up
the chilJren V anxiously inquired tbe captain.
1. sir, 1, 1, came Irom a dozen ready sail
ors in a moment
Thank you, my lads ; but I only want five.
will go in one myself."
i be selections were soon made, and there
they stood in the fore main mizzen chains the
commander and live noble fellows with tbe
bowlines under their anus, ready to risk their
lives to save tbe three children.
Steady ! Stand by now ! Here thev come !
Look out '." screamed tbe officer from the jib
boom; and a moment Utter the dim outlines ol a
boat loomed np by the lee eat head.' Another
of breathless susiienso, and the boat was abreast
of the fore chains.
"Stand by the forward whips! Lookout
there in the main chains. Veer away men.
Mow, Harry, nuw,': and down went the com
panions and tbe captain into the boat.
A breath later and a shout came ringing up.
"Look out main and mizzen chains. Sway
away on deck," and up by the run eame the
two men, each grasping a child iu his arms.
Ay, ay, sir, all right, answered a brave
fellow scrambling in on deck, with little Jenny
g rapped tightly by her clothes.
father : exclaimed the little girl, clasoing
the captain about the neck. " Father ! Father!"
echoed back two treble voice.
Almighty God, I thank thee ! Saved
saved saved !" and Captain Lester Walton
sank fuintiog oo the deck, lie knew the child
ren were his own from the moment they passed
th) ship's stern, and hia indomitable self-control
hail borne him up until they were rescued; when
the reaction eame be sank down insensible.
At an honr before sunset tbe following day
the ship was at her berth in New-York, and
the meeting between the distracted mother and
her children there, in the cabin of her husband'
ship, is too sacred a picture to be profaned by a
mere pen and ink copy.
