A hort account was g-.ita in Saturoaj" Lender of the proceeJinga at the celebration at Put in Bay on FnJaj lat. A more extended account w give thia morning, containing mauj 1 cmi of mtereat. PASSAGE AND INCIDENTS BY THE WAY. Bright a i he ravs of the sun, were the faces of the multitude which crowded the boats Ocean, Forest Queen and Arrotc, at an early hour, and when the bots put off into the Lake, a more happy collection of morta ca:i seldom be luund than those ahich sunk the steamers to the guards, and corered their decks till eery avibbie incii est ocoupiaJ- Sarjeant's Band poured forth vo.ume ot stirring mueic from the u,.oer decks, snJ occupation enough was found for a I'me in lia'eoirj to their productions, and admiring the Cn. Tiew of CleTeian J from the vter. Soon, howe.er, those who were so in .ined, filled the forward cabin ready to practice in tbe " gidJy maze of the dance," keeping time to the notes of the above eicelient Band who showed that thry were equally skilliul in dispensing parlor, or martial muric. During nearly all of the passage to toe islands th:ir lively notes kept tbe floor covered witli those " tripping o light lantaalic toe." Toung men and women, old men and maidens joined in the spjrt, until the cabin resembled a Cold of Chi nese fireworks with its ever varying color. The air upon deck was Tendered cool by the lake breeze, and rather too cool for the libt summer garments in which many of the pas sengers were arrayed. While upon the way the rain fell smartly for a time, but the sky was clear upon our reaching t ie U'ands which we did about twelve o'clock. As we rounded the point of the island and eame into view of the bay and its wharf, tbe V. S. Steamer Michigan was seen at anchor in tbe Bay, and tbe steamers tauten City, Capt. Slc Bride, irom Sandusky, and Island Queen, from Port Clinton, at the dock. The Bay City, Ca, U Moore, from Toledo, and the May Queen, Capt. Viger, from Detroit, were seen steaming toward the bay, as we in the Ocean aJvanced to the wharf, and shortly after our arrival, those boats drew up to the dock aad landed their heavy loads of living freight. Each steamer, on its arrival, was saluicd by the Sandusky Ar tillery Co. on shore, and by the guns on board the boats already in. In tbe course of an hoar after the arrival of the Ocean, the Forest Queen nd Arrrne from Cleveland eame aliin'rside the whan, and were soon followed by tne prcpciier Jersey City, of Toledo, with a large company on board. There were now eight steamers at the wharf, which, with the Iron Steamer Michi gan, and the numbers of sail Tease's which crowded the shore, gave the Bay a very lively appearance. Three Cleveland Artillery Com panies were present Co. A., Capt. Lewis, Co. B , Capt. Mark, and Co. D., Capt. Rice. The Ravenna Artillery Co., commanded by Capt. Bingham and accompanied by the Brimfieid Band, took passage on the Arrow. There were also on the ground, the Sandusky Artil lery Co., Capt. Bolicger, the Toledo Guards, Capt. Phillips, and a finely appearing company of Continentals from Detroit, who were dressed in the regular o!d Continental uniform. These Companies, with the many bands, gave the ground quite a martial and warlike appearance. Among those on board the Forest Queen were Gov. Cbiii, Hon. J. R. Giddinos, Col. Pas. sons, of Cleveland, Gen. FowLCa, of Connecti cut, Col McMillcs, of Columbus, TJ. S. Sena tor B. F. Want, and other gentlemen of honor and distinction. Got. Chase and those of bi Staff who were present, reviewed Artillery Co. B. Capt. Mace, whua on the boat, and made few remarks to them. By one o'clock th. several boa's were all in, and th. pa.sen.rers scattered about over th. grounds, the greater portion of them discussing the content of the baskets carried with tbem, while me bands were pitying, and a heavy can nonading su b?ing kept up by the Artillery Companies along the shore. The steam tug Xiagara was on the ground, or rather on the water, p.Jing with full loads between the Lx- cursion ground and Gibraltar island, the spot where Perry's look-out wa stationed, and from which p lint the first notic of the ap proach of the British fleet wa given. A flag stall is now erscled on the spot, from which the national colors war. Jang merrily to the breeze. j REPORT OF THE COMMITTEES. On arriving at the ground the Committees from the several cities met in the yard of Mr. Fox and chose as the chairman of th. meeting Wm. S. PiaEson, of Sandueky. PROCEEDINGS AT THE STAND. The aseeinuly, alter being called to order by Gov. Ch ase, listened to an appropriate and touching prayer by Rev. Geoeos Dcrntto. Got. Chase was then called on for a .psecht and responded in tbe following remarks: The vast crowd had assembled to day on an interesting occasion. Forty-five years ago to. day American valor wa met by British valor. American skill and courage had contested with British skill and courage on yonder lake, and came off triumphant. May they ever prove conquerors in like contests should unfortunate necessity provoke tbem. It is true we me t to-day to honor an Ameri can victory over British arms, but it is with no desire to revive hostile feelings. We have met to celebrate the honor of our country. We welcome here to-day the remnants of that gal lant band who fought and won the great battle of tbe lakes, and with tbem we rejoice over the beneficent result that followed the great victo ry. We have met to interchange no feeling of exultation over th? past battle, but to rejoice over tbe prosperity of the present. Why should we exult over the contst with our parent coun try ? The day of warlike contests is over, and the day of peaceful strife has been inaugurated. Instead of meeting on the field of battle we are now engaged in the contests of peace. In stead of cannon meeting cannon, we are now sending our inventions and scientific discove ries to meet their inventions and scientific dis coverit. We rejoice to welcome this Taat assemblage of citizen by whose hand the future destinies of the country are to be maintained. We rejoite to welcome the soldiers who are prepared to defend their country from foreign invaders; we rejoice to welcome a gallant naval commander who had served his country in nearly every sea, and last, not least, we rejoice to welcome such lare numbers of our fair country women, whose bright eyes and kind words are strong incentives to patriotism. He would thank the audience who bad come from over the State to commemorate an occa sion which ha but few parallel in history, for their presence. He reviewed the state of th. country at the time of tbi naval action, refer red to the defeat and disgrace with which the war had begun; to the cruel raTages of the Brit ish and Indians along the frontier, to Hull's sur render at Detroit; to the neesi'y of the' com mand of the lakes; and to the efficiency of Com. Perry in building and fitting his fleet to meet the enemy. The scene of the battle were rap'dly pa-sed over, and that T.etory. the first one attained over a British fleet, eloquently al luded to. He closed with the following appeal : " Shall we, standing in sight of the very pot where the battle was fought aad won, shall we, who now Djoy the full fruition of tbe liberty tbey struggled for, shall we be indifferent to the celebration of this event ! No ; let u this day how our appreciation of the deed of that day, by taking measures to place upon yonder mck of Gibraltar, a monument which shall show to future generations, that we shall remember with gTati'ude those noble heroes who there (ought, so long aa the waves hall dash upon cither hor of Lake Erie." Capt. Stephim Chamtli, of BoffJo, who commanded the Scorpion ia th. battl. and from whose vessel was fired the first and last gnn, was introduced to the audience, bat, owing to hi weakness of voice his remark wer. read by the chairman, a follow : Mr. President: Unaccustomed to speak in pub io and having no confidence in my voice, I ask the favor of yon to read the following reply to the flattering sentiment just offered : Fellow Citizens: I cordially thank you, for the distinguished honors paid to tbe memory cf my old cooj.-uan.ler. Capt, Bbowrell, of Xewport, R I, who was ailing master on th. schooner And was then introduced. Hi emotion would not allow him to speak, and he sat down with the tears flow ing from hi eyes. Three cheers, load and hearty hailed his appearance. Mr. William Blair, of Lexington, Richland county, O., wa introduced to the audience a One i-f the thirty-six volunteers from Gen. Har rison's army, who came to the assistance ol Com Perry. He wears a niver medal from the Stat of Pennsylvania for honorable services rendered. Loud cheers greeted him. The speech of Dr. Usher Parsons, of Provi dence, was then given, which will be found on another page Dr. Parsons was surgeon on board the Lawrence, and hi stirring narrative was listened to with thrilling interest. The next thing on the programme was a song by Ossian E. Dodge assisted by tbe Barker family. It wa announced by the chairman that the song wa Dodge's, the ainger was Dodge and tbe assistants were the Barker family ; but that although the song was Dodge's, there was ni Dodging in him. This was received with bout of laughter, bat Dodge', reply that h. hoped his ong would always be Chased, wa a still happier pun, and was most uproariously applauded. The following patriotic song wa then sung in Dodge' best manner, and as each verse closed with its inspiriting chorus the feel ing of the audience found vent in long and lou.l applause : ! Chobus: Mayor Staeeweather, of Cleveland, was tie next speaker, and right well did be bold the at tention of the audience, while with stirring words he alluded to the interest Cleveland had in the fate of tbi battle, and to the anxiety with which tbe sounds of the cannon were lis tened to by those at that place on that event ful day. When the booming of the guns came over the waters, crowd rushed to the shore of the lake and waited witb feverish impatience for the ending of the report. When they at length ended, and the sound of the last gun had died away, they retained to their borne feeling that victory was upon the aide of th. American, for they had heard the Jig gun last, and we have to day learned that Capt. Stephen Champlin fired that gnn, to bring back a captured ship that bad the audacity to attempt to run away. For forty five years the latt of the honored dead who fell in that struggle had lain beneath yonder willow tie., and to-day, w. who receive th. benefit of their labors, bav. same op with our wive, and little on to com memorate the occasion. Upon the fate of that battl. depended th. safety of th. whole frontier, and more, tbe hm or ot the American nam. and flg. And what a meeting was there, my countrymen on one siJe the American fleet manned by young men, and commanded by one who, although a soldier bad never yet fought a battle, and on th. other, a well equipped fleet, commanded by a here of Trafalgar, the greatest naval battle of th. world. He introduced, in a very bappy manner Shakspeare'i speech of Henry V. oa St. Cria pian's day, which wa appropriate to the day we celebrate, and closed by reference to tbe At lantic Telegraph, th marriage ti. that binds the two continent together and of which be aid, Wnat God baa joined together let no: man put asunder.' m At the concluaion of Mayor Starkweather' remarks loud eal for "Guiding" were made and the Hon. J. R. Giddino was led forward by the Chairman Mr. Giddioge remarked that al taongh not in Perry's fleet, be served aa a private i the skirmishes along the lake in 1312, and at the time of tbe battle was laboring in the field and listening with a state of mind which could only be conceived, to the sound of tbe cannon. He made a very eloquent allusion to the de grading and repulsive feature, of an aggressive war, but give a high character to the principle of self-defence, aa being noble and praisewor by. Tbe battle of life wa spoken of in contract to tbe battle of the field and he remembered that ia his own experience he had seen that on. hand red men i old fail in battling manfully against evil in public life, when one would on the field of brood and carnage. A noi-le speech, although a short one was that of J. R. GiJtUags' and it was aeceiued with hearty cheer. Hon. Ross Wilkin, ol Detroit, followed in a (hort speech in which b. vindicated strongly the claim of Michigan and Little Rhody to the respect of Ohio. Gov. Chase had said that in th. time of the war of 1812, Michigan wa "nowhere." So waa Ohio, and as (or Little Rhody, be was far ahead of Ohio, for she gav Commodore Perry to fight for Ohio. He alluded in a flattering manner to Judge McLean, who was born tb. same year with Perry and who bad been fighting too. not as Perry bad, with fire and ball, but in the field of principle, and h. who irill stand unscathed against, th. multitad. ia tru. hero. Judge Wilkin then introduced D. B. Dcr riELD, Esq., of Detroit, who read a fine poem on the events eonnrrted with the dir. Hon. II 1). Mason, of Toledo, then closed tbe exercise with a short and pertinent sperrh, after which the company rip-JIv t!.irred ami wended llicir way to tie diaTcn-iit bonrs whoee gun wera booming, whist lis screauii:, hells clanging and passengers cheerinr, and amid all this bustle the boat ungotT and erparetet! for the.r rcFrtctivc cities.
