JAMES BUCHANAN. WASHINGTON, Dec. 14. 1860. A Cleveland Lady Driver from New Orleans. X.'im Lucel'm Sexten, graduate of the Ho moeopathic College in 'this city, and a Ttry estimable &f, trell kno-wn ta our citizens and ateemed by all who knew her, arriTed in CleTeiand last Monday ereolng from New Orleans, having been driven from the city ad State. Hiaa Sexton was, for a time, txmseeted with Mrs. H. F. M. Brown in the .Agitator, published in this city, but went to New Orleans seTeral years ago to practice medicine. She had secured a lucrative prac tice and was pleasantly situated, whea she ' was waited upon a few days ago, by a Com mittee,, who charged her with her former connection with the Agitator. This she did .'not deny.' They then warned her to leave the State in twenty-four hours, basing their action npon an article upon John Brown which had been, published in toe Agitator, (after Miss Sexton had left, however.) rhk-h a New Orleans paper .pronounced "a damna ble article of some merit" ' Miss Sexton ap pealed to the police for protection, but was informed that they could offer her no safety. Jjainlhus situated, she could do no ksl than comply with the demand, and arrived here at, above Btattd. She' avo.vs her Hostility to slavery, bat says she never intrdded her cpintoas apon any one at the South. So the detestable Juggernaut of tlavery rolls on, crushing out all life and liberty where its existence is legalised, and lubricat ing its wheels with the blood of its victims. Compromise. .vr. A compromise implies tbe yielding np of something on both sides, fur the sake ot peace, but the si eholderi do not so under stand it. The North is asked to yield up the territories, or a large portion of tberp,(to sla very, nnder the aavas of compromut, but in reality as itn outright eon-aaatoa to an outra geous demand. The siavtUulJers make an unjust and un ConstituUonat.demnud of the North, get exci ted anl viuleat about it, and then the North is called npon to give up the greater part ot the territory to slavery aimply to appeaie tbeinl This is what thy cull eompromiteJ '' We are in favor of fulfilling evwy obliga Son imposed upon tbe Njrtb by tbe consti tuttdn letting slavery alone in the States, and giving thers a fair executioa of the provision lor the return of fugitives ; but so far as the territories are concerned, theymurf btprttmid teretian. Under the Constitution slavery can have no' legal existence in the territories. Sach is the doctrine of tbe fathers of our government, and such is to-day the doctrine of the lUpublicaa party set forth in clear And unmistakable language in the Chicago platform. The Chicago Tribune publishes a letter from a citizen of Atchison, Kansas, who has lately spent a few hours at the relief office at that point We copy the following thrilling extracts which will furnish our readers with some faint idea of the terrible suffering en dured by the people of Kansas. We hops it will also incite them to active and liberal charity; One forlorn looking man attracted my at tention. Ee was litterally clothed in rags; Such a tatter-demalion one can hardly .con ceive of. His garments, originally home spun, had been patched with so many differ ent materials, mostly varieties of bed ticking and sacking, thaf the feeble threads would no longer hold together, and the shreds were Happing about him as he walked. His face was haggard and hunger worn; cheek-bones protruded; flesh had shrunk away, and his eyes were hollow and eager, and had tbe terrible starved look in them which I once saw in a famine-stricken party of Irish, in 1847, and which I shall never forget I will tell his story as near as may be, in his own words : "My name, ia Abraham Huck. I'm from Ilenoy, came to Kansas last March, and hired a place on Deer Creek, Anderson Co. Wasn't able to go on an 1 build so hired, this year. Left borne last Sunday, (six days be fore.) Wife and one of the children with me; left seven at home, w:th some turnips and a peck omml," , " What I" I said, "a peck of meal for sev en r I "That's all sir, and. we've had nothing to e it on the road for three days except the little I have begged. "I planted firty-Eve acres, and harvested five bushels of wormy corn. Couldn't Lare lived at all but for Ue turnips. Got fijrty bushels of them. About fifty persons in my. neighborhood, and they's all destitute. : I s divided my turnips as tarns tlie'd go. Lost three yoke of oxen by the fever. Thar's no money, no clothes," and be casta melancholy glance at his own tattered garments, j " I knows f .rnilies as have nothing hut milk And a little corn meal to live on. Could name Buy in these parts in that ar condition " Inquiries were mad , and i'. was found that neither himself nor his wife and 'child bail had anything to eat since tbey reached the town in the morning. It was a sad sight to see tbe voracious hunger of tiie haggHrd woman, tearing tbe bread in her hurry to satisfy her tpprtt'e.- Tbe first thing mea do when tbey get into Atchison, is to obtain bread. They mostly have a little buffalo meat, especially those from the extreme bor der, but have had no breadiajfjs' tor a long period j Toe man whose story I have before nar rated, was furnished with ten sacks of roe:il anl seven of potatoes, and he left this morn ing. A savk of meal contains two bushels, or one l.undred pounds. This, at the alow? ance of a s ave in the Cotton States, one peck for a week, will support eight persons for that period. A sack of potatoes averages about 1 10 pounds. Ten sacks of meal and seven 6 potatoes is all that tbe amount of stuff in tbe bands of the committee will allow of their giving to a township. The have not been able yet to supply more than two-thirds of tbe townsnips mat nave applies, even at these rates. Since the 10th of November tbe Disbursing Agent here has received orders from 22i townships, and has not filled more than one out of three that have been presen ted. There has not been, at any time suflv cieat to fill the orders as they came. The Kansas Expedition. turn of the Wueoini military expedition, and denounces it as a huge blunder and an im posture. So tbroagh tbe columns of - the newspapers, the baleful hate of your Cobb, your Toom'i, and other secession heralds, gleams with fierce heat upon the steady but yet placable North. ' STATESMEN. This crisis seems to have quickened our Northern Senators And Representatives iqto statesmen. The calm intrepidity with which tbey meet the most aggravating provocation is admirable. You cau see them, as tbey hit in their legislative halls, close ranks to re ceive an assault That indescribable expres sion of tbe countenance, as man looks at mad full in the eye, translating from one to an other identical . impressions, indicates to the close observer how firmly they are fortifying their minds. It sensibly affects their haughty and insolent assailants, who demand with agonising but bitter wrath, "Why does not the North srak? We come to insult and provoke you; why do you not resist ? ' Apd then they whirl away in a frenzy of passion, shouting wrathfuUy, "What top of conces sion from such as these 1 Thry do not eowrrl" Yet the North remains calm masterly inac tiveholding out the olive branch now ask for bills of particulars ever professing their readiness to yield nerytUng btU frindplt for the sake ot union and harmony. But still the South storms "You have executed tiie Fugitive Slave law 1 Your personal liberty bills are nonsense 1 Tour John Brown raids are exceptional, and not the causa of seces sion! The election of Lincoln is inconse quential I Btrr you do n it lovt us there is no love lost" Still, the North, imperturbable, courteously asks, "What do you require?" and the South, springing wildly to tbe floor, bowls with demoniac energy through Iver son, with sharp incisiveness from Davis, gloomy menace through Brown, and rave ve hemence from WlgfaU, "We demand a slave code and otter subordination ' of Northern principle to Southern prejudice and slave holding interests. It we receive not these and more, these marble .frails shall become the habitation of bats and owls, and this fair fabric of fraternal States shall be shattered in to thirty-three fragments I" : Hints From Springfield. Springfield correspondent Herald telegraphs thus: ' For the sake of comment, I xepeat the fol lowing paragraph, published at tbe head of the editorial columns ot this morning's Jour-i nal (Mr. Lincoln's recognized organ), and embodied in the, special despatch sent to the Herald this afternoon. ' As stated in the ae f oaten, "it is known to bars emanated di rectly from the President elect," and hence deseires especial attention : . ... .. CABINET QUERIES. These "Cabinet queries appear to convey notb.ng more nor less than a decided hint to ibe effect, that I The willingness ot tbese ?'lwo or tbree Southern gentlemen ' referred to to accept eats In the Cabinet of the President elect is doubted. 2. " borne of the readers will doubtlessly look upon this analysis as implying a broad and unmistakable intimation that there is little probability of say representation .if the Soou ern States in the Cabinet of the , President elect, and that the meaning of the above semi official interrogatories goes to confirm the Southern fears of aggressive intentions on his part ' But it Will bo seea that only "two or three Soutnern gentlemen are auuaed to, while at least A dozen names from that sec tion of the coon try have been connected with the Cabinet ' My information warrants me, indeed, in stating that these queries are only Intended as feelers, and should be simply looked npon as indicative of tbe delicacy felt by Mr. Lincoln at snaking propositions to open and ancient adversaries of the party that elected him. John Bell's last letter did sot improve his chances of being offered a seat, as its accusa tory tone towaros the .North is not considered balanced by the subsequent anti-disanion sen timents. To-day some of the oldest and most inti mate friends of Mr, Lincoln' gave it as their deliberate opinion in the course of a conver sation during their usual rendezvous ia one ot the State offices, that peaceable secession was a matter of absolute impcssibuity. Their views were expressed ia sach a manner as to convey the idea that they were the reflections Of similar convictions in higher quarters. It was asserted that even thonga coercion were not employed by the federal government, a conflict would be made men jiule by tbe lm probability oi an agreement upon the terms of the separation between the two sections of the country, secession and civil war were evidently thought contemporaneous contin gencies by the parties In question. His martial din position might be taken as a qualiiication for the Secretaryship ot tbe War Department Stracger things have happened. Voice of the London Times. The London Times, in an article upon American politics, closes thus : Let there be no mistake as to English pub lic opinion on this subject It we have paid a sincere bomage to tbe rising greatness of America, it has not been to that which tbe Southerners are v anxious to conserve, but to that which they are striving to destroy. All bat a noble and veneraole in the' United States is associated with its federal constitu tion. It is not the demonstrations of South ern ruffianism in Congress, or the filibuster ing aggrandizement of the South, from the Mexican annexations downwards, or the fu gitive slave law. or the Dred Scott decision, or the Kansas Nebraska act it is' not thes , or any other triumph of Democratic inso lence during their ascendency of half A cen tury, that has commanded tbe sympathy apd adaiiratien of Europe. We have judged ibese things leniently, as the actions of great men and great rations ongbt to be judged, be cause we knew tbe perilous conditions under which so mighty an enterprise as the civiliz ation of America must of necessity be carried out, and have confidence in the practical good seuse of the American character, A certain hectoring tcne, arising from the exuba ant consciousness of health And strength, Is char acteristic of adolesence, but no such allow ance is made for deliberate acts of lawless violence. Even now, so long as the agita tion is confined to bullying and insults, to "retaliatory laws" and indignation meetings in the form of conventions, we Bball not de spair.' High pressure, moral as well as me chanical, is the rule in America, and threats 0' civil war may be used there in a strictly parliamentary sense. But if this rough spar ring should by and chance be curried loo tar, and the threat so often uttered in jest or wantonness, should be repeated in earnest and lead to bloodshed, it is some comfort that the aggressors will not be tbe stronger party. Mr. Lincoln will in that ease command a ma jority in Congrea, and wiJ carry with him the support ot all those wbo, however tole rant ot slavery, will not tamely acquiesce in its becoming the basis of an illegal and bos tile Confederation. Red Hiads im thh Asct.sDAHT. The New York Sunday Times says that red heads are the latest "agony " in the fifth avenne in that city. So obstinate has the fancy become, that a short time since a lady in Fifth Avenue gave a party at which only gentlemen with red hair of the prevailing shades were invited. As one alter another of tbe male guests Ar rived, the effect produced became very canons. The majority rejoiced in brilliant flamingtop knots, which fairly illuminated the room; but all the different tints were exhibited,- from the bright auburn and "golden chesnut"(whch gome ladies particularly affect) to the pale reddish brown and delicate flaxen. Some gen tlemen are becoming as eager for flame-colored locks as the ladies. . j Special Dispatch to the N. Y. Post. General Scott's Opinion. General Scott has given tbe President an elaborate opinion in reference to the present condition of tbe military defences of the country, and what should be done in view of possible contingencies. He deprecates seces sion, he begs his own state of Virginia to pause and bear the ills she has rather than fly to those she knows not of. But if secession occurs, he says, it will result not in the for mation of two, but four distinct nationalities. Tbese are, as near as I recollect s follows : New York, New England, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa and Minneso'a. Except what I will next mention, rj one; the second will consist of Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Western Virginia, and so along down tie Bine Ridge,' taking in Western Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri and Texas. The third will consist of South Carolina, Georgia, East Florida, Eastern Virginia, and perhaps, Maryland and Delaware. The Paci fic states will constitute the fourth. The General treats the exclusion of the grain-growing states oftbe West from a direct communication with tbe Gulf of Mexico,, as an impossibility. Tbey will have tree course to go down the Mississippi, and will insist opon Pensacola as a naval depot Tbe General has al 0 given an elaborate state ment of the disposition of tbe military forces, of the nation, and the condition and needs of the (ortified places. It is an important paper, and ought to be published. Established Religion of the Cotton Confederacy. While cotton politicians are busy in sever ing the bonds ot Cnion, and settling upon a plan of govejnroent for the Independent Cot tondom, it seems that tbe Episcopal Clrrpy men are not asleep, nor so far carried away by the political excitement as to lose tight of advantages to be gained by the Episcopal Cburcli. It is rumored, and we give the ru mor for what it is worth, that letters or cir culars have been addressed to prominent Norliern Episcopalians, i-tating that in the event of secession, efforts will be made to make tbe Episcopal Church the established Church of the new government Such is 'the rumor, but like thousands of rumors ia tbtse exciting times, it may bare no foundation.
