from J5ackhnnnon, Virginia, cams in on
the Pittsburgh and Columbus trains lset
night, who had received an honorablo dis
tbirn from the service. They were id
poor health, and in very destitute oiroum
slanoee. Wear informed that they en
lUted from the counties of Ashtabula,
Lake, and Oeaugs. They left on the Lake
Shore train for home this morning. Seve
ral of onr citizens provided them with iood
and lodging, free, or they would have suf

s?ems to us that the proper authorities do
not use dna diligence in providing for the
aetnal neeeasary comfort of the discharged
soldiers, until they are enabled to reach
their homes. It is not kindness to treat
the sick particularly in this manner.

here, but on hearing cf our approaon wej
suddenly retreated, carrying away wuu
them eight wagon loads of army stores c-
longing to the government. They were
afterwards fired upon when about sixmnes
from town, by a party of sixty Union men
who were lving in nbueh, and between
And forty met instant dsath, their
Captain (named Turk; among tne numner.
The gljrlous Fourth passed off very qui
etly with us. The liili went through their
customary drills and dress parade, and we
were reviewed by Ma'or General McClel
land and Brigadier General Rosencrans.
Co. B, of YoungstowB; are stationed about
six miles from town, rroteoling a flouring
mill, the property of a strong Union man,
which has been robbei'. on several occasions
by the rebels. He asksd for protection, and
Co. B was Immediate'y detailed. Tb in
spection of arms and equipments took place
this afternoon. Also a vote to asoertaln
the number of men in ths 19th who would
go for three years. . Co. A furnishes about
twenty-five, Co. K about sixty, and the
other companies from five to twelve.
Should a sufficient number sign the roll to
form a nucleus, we will probably be paid
off and sent home immediately, the officer
to lecruit, and the three years' boys on a
furlough of fifteen or twenty days. .
; There was considerable hubbub and ex
citement in camp a day or two since, In
which Quartermaster General Fitch
iired, very conspicuously. The facts are
as follows; A Union gentleman residing
near town had lost one of his slaves, and
a widow lady residing- near him had lost
two horses. Gen. Fitch was requested by
JuJge Key (Judge Advocate in Gen. Mo
Clellan's staff) to assist the man in finding
the property.
In passing throngh the Camp ef the
19th, ; the gentlemea found his slave
cooking for one of the companies, (Company
li of Salem). Gen. Fitoh immediately ar
rested the negro, and was proceed-ng with
him to jail, McClellan's headquarters, when
several of the members of companies from
Ashtabula and Geauga rushed forward and
endeavored to prevent taking the alsrve out
of camp, and the sentinel refused to pass
the slave and his owner. Gen. Fitch im
mediately sent for Lieutenant Colonel Hol
lingsworth, and requested a detail of four
men to escort the slave to Gen. McClellan's
headquarters. The detail was made and
tb slave taken before Judge Advocate
Key, who examined the ease and delivered
the slave to his owner. The officers at Gen.
McCiellan's headquarters commended the
eondnot of Gen. Fitch highiy, but some
members of the 19th were highly excited,
remarking they were going to fight for the
freedom of slaves and to avenge the deftth
of John Brown. Company D had written
in big letter on on of their fonts the fol
lowing inscription: "Remember John
Brown, benighted Ashtabula, the home of
Giddinga nd Wale." Gen. Fitoh reported
it to headquarters, and it was erased.
These men are bitter against Fitch ; some
but the Colonei,-cjiJa.Uireaten his life,
officers of the regiment generally stand by
him, as do the offioers of the brigade and
division, and thus the matter rests for the
present
CoL Tyler of the 7th Regiment made us
a call Wednesday night. His regiment is
stationed at Weston, fifteen miles from
here. He informed me ibt they had taken
sixteen prisoners and $30,000, leaving
nearly thirty thousand dollars more in the
bank, which I suppose belonged to depos
itors, he (Tyler) still retaining the keys.
Since our arrival here, the 3d and 4th
Ohio have joined ns ; also one company of
Regulars (infantry) and one battery (Reg
ulars) from Nebraska. There are now
within six miles of this place about twelve
thousand troops, and it is the general opin
ion that they will rendezvous her for some
time.
It is the opinion of learned military gen
tlemen that the only battle that will take
place in Virginia worthy of note will be at
Richmond. I am satisfied from what I have
seen that there is no fight in the rebels
that scout about this portion of Virginia.
The officer of Ihe guard has just ordered

Return or Capt. Crake. Capt. Crane, ot
Co. D, 19th Ohio Regiment, returned this
morning from Marietta, where he had been
stopping for the past two weeks. On ac
count of his health, he has not been able to
be witli bis company, sincd they went into

We learn from Capt. Crane that he had
an attack of paralysis about the 20th of
June, and has not recovered entirely. The
attack, was not very severe,' and Capt.
Crane thinks he will recover from it in a
few weeks. Be will join 'his command as
soon as he is able, lie went to his home
in Ashtabula this afternoon.
