The Man who Shot Booth.
Soraiant Boston Corbett. the soI3ier
who snot the usaasin Bootb, U A native of
England, where be tu born in 1839. He
came to this country while stall lad,' And
resided in Boston, Mam , where he wu
converted, acd on being baptized, request
ed the minister to give him the name of
"Boston, since wnicn tune he has devoted
himself to active deed of Christian
charity. He came to Kew York about six
yean age, and worked in several hatters'
shops on Kasaau street, where he was al
ways considered a good workman ana
faithful Christian. So earnest was he in
the work of converting sinners, and re
forming: drunkards, that he nirta rooms
for the express purpose, caring for the
temporal and spiritual wants of every out
cast whom he could assist, or furnish with
employment. He continually expended all
his own money for saoh purposes, and fre
quently borrowed from his friends; one of
wbom .says be would often come to his
nop and say: " Bam, 1 nave got a new
boarder, and haven't got the money to buy
him bread. Let me have a dollar until I
get my pay." And he always repaid the
borrowed money before he went home ra
Saturday evening. Thos he unobtrusively
accompii&nea mucn gooa.
jrotesutnt jnetnoaist Charon when he en
listed in 1861, for three months, in the 12th
regiment New York State Militia, under
Uolonel Butterneld. W hile serving in
this regiment he reproved an officer for
swearing while on dress parade, Tkis act
caused him to be confined in the guard
house, on bread and water, Jfor several
oaya, une oi nil companions carried him
some coffee, which he refused because It
was against the "orders" for him to re
ceive it. He next enlisted m the same resr-
iment when 'Washington was again threat
ened, was captured by the rebels at Har
per's Perry, and paroled when General
Miles surrendered. He enlisted again in
latn regiment when Pennsylvania was in
vaded, and, on returning to Hew York,
continued to serve during the riots of J ulv.
1868. When discharged from the 12th, he
eniistea in trie lotn jew xorlc cavalry,
and had served about a year when he was
captured by some of Mosby s guerrillas.
He was with some companions on a scout.
The party was surpriced and surrounded.
several ot his comrades were killed, and
the remainder fled. Corbett, however,
backed up against an old pear tree, dis
charged his carbine, and then drew his
revolvers, with which he kept two dozen
guerrillars at bay until every shot had
been fired. He then used his sabre. Mos
by wu so pleased with his bravery, that
he gave orders to his troopers not to shoot
at so brave a man.
After this Corbett was imprisoned at
Andersonville for five months, where he
continued to preach and exhort, devoting
ramseii to tne conversion of nig fellow
prisoners while in confinement. He en
dured with Christian fortitude the many
hardships he encountered. Oa being re
leased be was promoted a sergeant for his
gallant defense at the time of his capture,
lie received a furlough of twenty days,
wnen ne visited tne city, aoout two months
ago. He had recently rejoined his regi
ment, and at the time he was detailed upon
this last expedition was still suffering from
scurvy and chronic diarrhtaa contracted at
Andersonville. While in the city he was
a constant attendant at the Fulton street
prayer meetings, and frequently spoke to
those assembled there, be re aant Corbett
is a man of medium size, about five feet
six inches in height, square build, with an
open, noble-loosing countenance, broad
forehead, high cheek bones, and regular
features. His hair, which is dark brown,
he parts in the middle, and wean a light
moustache and chin beard. His voice is
remarkably pleasant and attracts imme
diate attention, especially when he is sing
ing in cnurcn or prayer meeting. in
comrades and superior officers are all at
tached to him, and repose the utmost con
fidence in him. His regiment ia now sta
tioned at Vienna in Virginia, looking afkf
iloeoDy guerrilla.
A Notoriety of the "Temple" in London.
uou. .
Miss Plite fell down dead in the Mid
dle Temple this week. Dickens' reader g
know her as the little lady who was always
hovering abcut the courts and behaving
eccentrically. Doubtless she was consid
ered a mere pen and ink sketch from fan
cy, but she was a fact every inch of her.
b&e would, we know, step the most learned
judges that cit on the bench when in full
swing ot their awful judgment. She
would rise ana ensue cer lean weird list at
the embodiment of wisdom in horsehair,
and exclaim, "Oh you vile man I Oh you
wicked man I uive me my property ! I
will issue a mandamvt and have your hvb
eas corpusl" And having continued in
a like fashion for a minute or two, she
would bind up her papers in "red tape"
at letst, tape mat had once been red, ana
bad followed her dirty fortunes for yean
and either subside into the seat granted
her by the barristers, or depart triumphant
from the court
Ho usher had dared exclaim. "Silence I"
or send forth the hush of the cackling ani
mal peculiar to that official. Ho barrister
naa nuaged ner under sue tourtn rib, as he
might have done another, and would have
done had she been fairer. And the learned
judge, sitting patiently till the end, with a
mud persperation only rising on the tip of
the nose to tbow that he was in any way
put out, would then, as if nothing had oo
cured, resume the thread of his learned
judgment, to be appealed against, perhaps,
soon alter, wntt tne mystery is between
Miss Flight and the bar, no one can tell.
She may have been the embodiment of a
peculiar wrong, and have appeared in the
eyes of the bewigged as a sort of ghest,
threatening the evil doers with the inaoea.
.Perhaps she wu pensioned merely out ol
some stray idea of benevolence.
We scarcely thought of that in connec
tion with the object of our comment, and
yet to a certain extent it may be true, u
she received from the right learned Mid-
dole Temple a sum of shillings per week,
which she added to a sum ot shillings re
ceived from the right learned Inner Tern
ele, and ao she supported life. But why
the learned of the law gave something for
nothing, and were afraid of, and respect
ful to the little woman, let no man in
quire. The little woman s soul has, how
ever, flitted, and we can say thut, after all,
the few young lawyers who known nought
of her history will send after her whither
she tu gone a word of regret. Court

Anecdote of Jeff Davis.
[Richmond Correspondence of N. Y. Tribune.]
It will not be surprising to tha Union
reader to learn that J. D. carried into
his own domestic household the tyranny
which he expressed in the management of
public affairs. Parties who were frequent
visitors at nis nouse assert mat ms lamuy
were invariably studious in their eflorta to
anticipate or gratify his slightest whims,
and that, failing to do so, he never failed
to "define his position" as master of tha
household.
Another story is told of the rame person
aee, the truth of which is veuched for by
those conversant with the circumstances.
Previous to the evacution of the city, Da
vis and his wife, accompanied by Secretary
Mallory end Colonels Ould and Hatch, in
dulred.in a pleasure trip down the James
to the rebel fleet, during which "J. D.'J
became grossly lnectnaiea. Ana party
landed at Beckett's, and on their way home
passed Idbby Prison. J! oreeltinir in his
maudlin stale the respect due to the rebel
sentry posted on the walk m frost of the
pruen, he peremptorily oraerea nim asiae,
but was at peremptorily brought to by the
bayonet of the sentinel, who informed htm
that no one was allowed to pass ms beat.
Davis continued to order him aside, and at
last the snlry, becoming indignant, drew
his musket to his shoulder and was In the
act of pulling tha trigeer when implored
to da Ut by Mrs. Davis, who threw her
arms around his neck and told him that it
was the President who- desired to pass.
"Don't care a damn who it is." replied the
santineL " I have nov orders and can allow
no one to pass.'' The result was that Jtr.
Jeff Davis finally concluded, unlike the
good Samaritan, to "paat by on the other
side." For my own part, I place confidence
in thig story, receiving it as I do from a
source entitled to the fullest credence. . . -
