On Friday night last the residence of Mr Garver, who lives near the village Dalton, Wayne eounly, was entered robbers, who came fully armed, and meeting with some resistance from a young man who occupied one of the upper rooms, stabbed him in six places. Dr. Harley, Dalton, was called te see him, and at first thought his wounds would prove mortal but he has rallied considerably, and msy recover. While this fight was taking place up stairs, one of the robbers was taking care of the old gentleman down stairs, made a miscalculation, aa the old gentl man took care of Aim, and, with the assist ance of his wife, bound him up ia ropes enough to tie half a dozen men, and Saturday took him to Wooster and lodged him in jail. The others escaped. On Sun day a man named Chris. Snyder was rested aa an accomplice. It ia supposed there were three oi them. Skjuocs abb Peahaps Fatal Accidext. Between nine and tea o'clock yesterday morning, a young man named Nathan Nason, of Maine, fell from the tap of a tel egraph pole, a distance of about sixty feet. landing on some stones at the edge of Cuyahoga river, opposite the City Forge, and sustained very serious if not fatal in juries. He is not badly bruised, but is hurt inwardly, and his spine is injured, causing partial paralysis of tbe lower limbs. The accident hapr-sned in this wise: He, with three other men, was fastening wires upon poles between the tow-path of canal and the river, just above Seneoa street bridge. The wire was being reeled off from a wagon, and Nason had fattened it to pele, when the horse started and the wire caught firmly on some part ol the wagon, giving the pole a jark which, with weight, pulled it over, and he fell not only the length of the pole, thirty-five feet, twenty feet lower, striking as mentioned above. . , Dr. Johnson was called forthwith, and several other surgeons soon after arrived the spot. The young man was removed his lodging! ia the Commercial House Beneca street. Mr. Nason is about twenty years of age, unmarried, a native -4aine, and has no relatives in this part the country. Fixe. About eight o'clock last night Are broke out in the engine room of Messrs. Backus and Williams' coal oil refinery, tbe junetion of Literary street and Maho ning Railroad, Brooklyn, just under the camp. It is situated outside of tha city limits, and aa little or no water could obtained, and as the ground around the re finery is marshy, Engineer Hill deemed inadvisable to take the steamers over there. The loss is about $20,000. Insurance, $10,- A Card. Editob Limit: In th Plain Dernier, ol Tuesday evening it ii strongly intimated, if not charged, in a squib under the caption, A Nice Piece of Business," that a certain Paymaster had brought over from Camp Cleveland a wagon-load of paid-off soldiers, to trade at a certain dry goods and j ewalry store, and had received there Cor a. gold watch, per eentage, Ac, Aa. In yesterday evening's issue the Local of the Plata Dealer caves in to the Paymas ter, and in a manner apologizes to him by citing the authority of the undersigned as the basis of his published report. Said Local, in company with the Pay master, came into my office yesterday, when I rave him the following card : . - - 1 To thtEdiitr of the Cleveland Plain Dealer t The statement appearing in your paper of lastevenmg, having been attributed to make a statement of the facts: I was en gaged in my store, np stairs, (with a custo mer) wnen your Local Editor came up to me, asking me it 1 heard anytniog oi uu report as stated in tbe article referred to. As far as his paaaing my atore a concerned, I can prove by a number of witnesses that I was at the time in thi third story or my estao lisbment attending to a customer. Now I have this to say, and am willing to make affidavit and take my oath on what I say, and Mr. A. W. Alexander, cutter in my store, will do the same : Said Local and Mr. Alexander came up where I was engaged, aid I merely answered tbe Editor's jae-j tions by saying that I had heard such a rumor. I did not say it Kan true, but said that personally I knew nothing about it, and that he should not publish it from any iulormation I could give him. He evi4 dentlv came to me with the intention of having the rumor repeated or confirmed, as he stated he heard it from the business men along the street, and named a proji. nent business man who had called on him to talk about the matter. lie even stated to me that he had seen just then a wagon load of soldiers brought over to the said store. Furthermore, yesterday morning when I handed said Local that card in my office, he said in substance, "I don't care for my s.lf having pnblished that article, but I don't want to publish anything which will trouble Mr. Armstrong, who is responsible fur everything that appears in t'e paper.
