As Col.-R, B. Carpenter was stand
ing outside oi the post office, yesterday
morning, at a little after 8 o'clock, Mr.
P. T. Perkins, the proprietor of the
Cincinnati and Covington line of omni
buses, approached, and, without utter
ing a word, drew a revolver and fired,
the first ball striking his neck just below
the chin, and passed through the throat,
lodged near " the surface of the skin be
low the left car ; the second struck near
the navel, but its force was arrested by
a watch" which was in the fob, and only
a small flesh wound was inflicted ; the
third ball missed entirely.
Mr. Carpenter waS conveyed to the
office of Dr. Blackburn, when Profess
or Evans was sent for, who extracted the
ball. Mr. C, however, is in a most
Ereoarious situation, and up to a late
our bat little hope was entertained of
his recovery. " He appears perfectly
sensible of what is going on, but from
the nature of the wound is unable to
.apeak.
" JJr. Perkins gave himself voluntarily
into custody, auct an examination was
held yeaterisj afternoon, at two o'clock,
before 'S ibires Soutlipate and Bcalc,
when the large room ?f the City Hall was
crowded.' - ' .
After a preliminary examiiT.'lt'-on tn0
Court ordered that the defend. be
held in $12,000 bail; to appear at th
March term of the circuit Court, to an
swer.
- The cause of this melancholy affair ia
said to be occasioned by some scandal
ous report propagated respecting the la
dy of Mr. Perkins, and attributed to
Mr. Carpenter. The latter gentleman,
however, is said by his friend never to
have ottered - a disrespectful word con
cerniug the lady. -
Col. Carpenter ia well known as the
able prosecutor in the vv ard case.
Mr. . Carpenter at last advices lay in
a verr critical situation. Air. U. is a
lawyer, and particularly distinguished
himself in the famous V ard case, where
he appeared for the State. If he sur
vives, it will be with the less of his
voioe. Mr. Perkins is a very respecta
ble man, 'and the cause of the affair is
said to have been improper overtures
made by Carpenter to the wife of Per
kins. The difficulty is of long standing.
