The Wide Awake orfrnnizntion at Ashtabula has infused a new spirit amonff tbe eleotora there. AVe shall hail an increased Tote in that town at tbe November election as frnis of the enterprise. Con. Reporter. That's so, bre. Au.it. These Wide Awakes are as terrible to locofoceism, as an army with banners. The visit of onr Kingsvillo friends few weeks ago, not only stirred os up to good works, but filled onr opponents with cooster cation. That increased vote yon may count on Geo. Willard, who long since earned the title of Prince of Ashtabula merchants, has Just returned from New York and Doston, with unusually liberal supplies gathered from the very cream of those markets, and there is very little reason to doubt that he will enter the list as a competitor for ttade.with as strong induce. meats as the tnoet favored. Recollect, reader that yon haven't began to beat op the market, till you have mado descent npoo the old brick store. See adv. Our Youso Wiob Awakes We are indebt ed to the company of young masters who have formed themselves into a company, for a call at onr domicile the other evening, in our absence. The sweet cider should not have beeo forgotten, bad we beeo home. ' Those cheers were full of significance and hope. VTbe mouth of the Grand River having filled- op with sand, the Beacon-light on east pier has been discontinued by order of Govern ment fjf We stated ia our last week's issue from information then received that the loss by burr ing of tbe Eingnville Woolen Factory fell prin cipally upon S. S. & S. 0. Osborn. Mr. S. C Obbokn informs as that the Messrs. Cbowtusr vera tbe principal sufferers. V-The population of this county is 31,656; ia 1850 It wag 28,767 ; and the increase is 3, 189. Tbe population of the whole State is about 2.550,000, and increase of about 600,- 000. SirersMMO!. We regret to announco tbe fact, that our fellow citizens Messrs. Patterson & Winsxah, have found it necessary to submit to a suspension of their business, by an assign went of their stock in trade to Mr. Charles Patterson. Shocking. As the wives of Solomon Stone nd Henry Dyke, of Mentor, with a son of each lade of 14 or 18 years of age, and an infant of Mrs. Stone's, seven months old , were in a t Lorse lumber wagon crossing tbe Fairport, plank road, on Saturday morning last, on thPir way to Painesville, they were overtaken by the mail train from Cleveland. Tbe wagon was struck by tbe engine under full speed, complotely sliv ered, and with a portion of its occupants thrown ome two rods, over the fence. Between the fence and the remains of the wagon was found Mrs. Dyke, alive, but with one of the bones in the right arm broken between the wrist and el bow, and the right leg badly smashed between the knee and ankle. -Some ten feet farther along close to tbe track, was found the lifeless body of Mrs. Stone, with a small but fatal wound on the top of tbe head, penetrating to the brain. Near by was the body of the Dyke lad, life ex tinct ; one legbrokeo below tbe knee, and there were indications of a heavy blow across the breast. The babe alive, was still fifteen or twenty feet beyond these. It bad a slight scratch on tbe forehead, and one leg was broken just above tbe kneo. Tbe Stone boy was found alive, on the crossbeam of tbe locomotive, with one leg broken, sod collar-bone broken. The three survivors were soon taken to houses in the neighborhood, and such surgical aid adminis tered as their cases demanded and all are said to be doing well, and it is thought may recover. By the next train, two boors after the acci dent, Mr. Superintendent Nottingham arrived, and at once applied himself to all the demands of the sad affair. Nurses were ordered for the maimed at the expense of tbe company, every thing that humanity required was prepared for the burial of the dead, and the husband of the women, who were absent on a journey to Mich igan, were advised of the terrible affair, and or ders given for ao extra train to bring them the entire distance. The weather was inclement, and the party were screening themselves from tbe weather with an umbrella and were not.it is said, conscious of the approach of the truiu. The Conobboational Church of this village, whose pastor has been absent for the past two Sabbaths, enjoyed, on Sunday last, the services of the Rev. Mr. Morris, or Lebanon of this state. There were several considerations which rendered Mr. M's presence exceedingly pleasant: A son of old Senator Morris, and a brother of two or three representatives in Congress, his stork is decidedly good, and bis gifts and acquire ments both of head and heart, showed him wor thy of bis lineage, and bis three efforts of the day were highly acceptable and profitable. The church over which he is pastor, has a history strikingly similar to tbe one here. It is Congre gational, came out. from an old school body, has a membership of sbout tbe same extent 60-atanding npoo the broad comprehensive plat form of a full proportioned gospel, with a con sonant and manly liberality, vitality and grace, and just entering irto tbe occupancy of an edifice similar iu outlay to that here proposed. When these facts wero feelingly stated in a few, brief, simple sentences, as the congrega tion stood waiting the beuedictlon, tbe effect was electrical, and every heart full a quicker beat, and a fraternal sympathy ant glow of affection which tho blessed a Inspiring thought of a oneness in Christ is alone capable of pro ducing. Mr. Mobbis and his day's labor here will not soon be forgotten. Burglaries. The Sboe shop of Wm. Nct TALL, of tbU village was entered on Saturday, night 13th, and stripped of pretty much of iu controls, anioontiog to something less than f 100 and on Tuesday night of this week, a slmilat' operation was performed at Kingaville, npon the shop of Paid, and a similar amount of property taken.. . A large proportion of the Ashtabula Wide Awakes paid a visit on Friday evening 19th, to their republican friends of Geneva, and bad a very good time of It. The forepart of the evening was taken op by supper hospitably provided by the citizens at the Union House, mainly, but to some extent at private houses. While a por tion of the generous citizens were thus engaged in looking after the Internal improvement of their guests, a numerous portion gathered at the town hall, packing It to its utmost extent, and listened to an address from the lion. L. S. Siikr man, of a stirring and effectivo character, after which the club lighted their torches and gave our neighbors many of them at least tlioir first sight of a Wide Awako procession. Tboir marches, and countermarches and manoeuverings through the Main Streets were continued well into tho evening, much to the pleasure and sat isfaction of the numerous spectators, and do doubt to tbe encouragement and quickening of the ical of our political Mends. Though the weather was not stormy, tho heavens lowered angrily, and the breeze played with the torches more familiarly than an effective display would admit of. With this drawback, the occasion was one of much pleasantness, ond well calcu lated to strengthen the bonds of neighborhood comity and political fellowship. Our Geneva friends are not stinted in soul, nor open to any impntation of narrowness In tho coortisics and amenities of society. We found a cheerful and friendly greeting not only among political friends, but also among some leading opponents. Among the latter we allude with pleasure to oar friend Sr-RIKO, whose earnestness is worthy of emula tion, and which we confidently trust, when tho emptincs of squatter sovereignty shall have the beucGt of the full blaze of that meridian light which ia bcing'poured upon it, will take a better direction. Although some designing locofoco attempted to deprive our political friends of the necessary ammunition for carrying on the battle of the 9th, the majority rolled op on that occasion was a wholesome one, and we doubt not, from their assurances, that our opponents wilt come out of the November straggle, some degrees smaller, and beautifully less, than at the recent election. So mote it bo. For the Ashtabula Telegraph. Mr. Editor : First impress ionsj if pleasant, have a fragrant remembrance, and a salutary influence on the heart. They retain a living freshness, and are tbe delightful souveuirs of after life. We love to look back over the pleasont scene and remembrances of life, and in their reproduction on tbe pages of memory, we fiud many of tho noblest pleasures. In ibeir purity and richness they bless the soul, enrich the so cial affections, and increase onr love of lire and all its privileges and enjoyments. Spending a day or two, including a Sabbath, in your pleasant town, and having tho opportu nity of meeting a largo number of your citizens in christian and social fellowship, I carry away, very pleasant impressions of tho intelligence, christian, order, aud kind hospitalities of the people of Ashtabula. It was my first visit, aud entering it a stranger, I was greeted with a gen erous welcome by all whom I met, aud speut two very pleasant and profitable days. The Sabbath was spent in meeting, at three different times, good audiences in the Congrega tional place of worship, and joining with them in the delightful services of the sanctuary. The ft ide Awake attention, and the devout rever ence mauilested by all, gave a pleasing evidence of tbe christian culture of tbe congregation and their appreciation of Divioe Service. The singing by the choir, accompanied by the music of a Que melodeoo, played skillfully by a blind man, was executed io excelleut taste, and fino effect. Nowhere, scarcely, have I beard finer church music. As good music, vocal aud in strumental, is a most importaot and delightful part of the public worship, the Congregational Church, in its opening organization, have great reason to coogratulate themselves on their well trained and excellent choir. Tbe church seems to be awake aud earnest, aud to huve a prosper ous and useful career before them. Tbe church edifices of other denomination?, with their spirts and neat appearance, and filled, as I understand, with good audiences every Sabbath, revealed a healthy religious condition and progress. A morning walk through tbe town enabled me to see tbe many tasteful and comfortable dwellings, and yards filled with flowers and shrubbery, indicating tbot the occupauls had comrurt, taste, intelligence and christian culture. The Due school buildings where the children and youth are educated on tbe Union plao, under the able superinteudeuc3 of Mr. Bruce, gave evidence or great atleution to this importaut in terest uoderluying all others. Your churches aud educational buildings revealed tho secret of your prosperity, and the appearances of couifoit aud compeieuce, and a christian civilization which abouud throughout your place. A cur sory perusal of tho i'el egrapb, tbe only puper iu tbe towo, eviuced that it was a live Republi can paper, ably edited, and doing much good in the greut uud good cause or freedom and Ro publicauism. I have noticed in my travels that where a cemtuunity liberally supports a paper or the right moral and political stamp thai tbe people make rapid progress in prosperity and improvements. A ride in the country presented a continued line or furms, nuder a high state or cultivation, with bouses aud barns bright with paint, and all io excellent order. Ashtabula cheese is fa mous iu the far distaut region or my home, aud I had often tested its superior excellence, and now I saw tho farms and cows whence it came. Tbauks to the Republican farmers or old Ash tabula, for tbe good cheese which tbey send to savory mouths all over the lund. Hearing that tbey exported moie than a million of dol lars worth of cheese, annually, I was a little in oredulous, but as every body said it was true, my onbeliefyieldtd. Surely, thought I, tbo farm ers or Ashtabula, must be a busy set, aud lich as cream. Well J so loug os tbey build the tbe Dice school houses, and churches which I saw, the more cheese they make and sell tbe better. Mj unexpected rl.it to your rural town and tbe first Impressions, so favorable and pleasant, will be cherished, in sacred remembrance witb much gratification, ad, If, io B. wlrj(lDg through life I should chance to come again, may my second sojourn be as pleasaut as this, end may I find ail tbe people eten more prosperous Is VIATOR. Ao unfortunate strifs has sprung up between tbe brothers Culvsr, of this place, mail contractors, and the Flauk road company, which has led to the Institution of a suit before a U. S. The re fusal to pay is based npon tho allrged unlawful condition of the road. The process being criminal, was forthwith, but the respondents were allowed to make their own appearance at Clevclund, 10 a. m. on Friday, 2Cth. Millinkrv. J. G. Wright wants ns to say that Ashtabula never presented so extensive and elegant an assortment of millinery goods, as are to be found at his rooms. We have so often heard this, tint the verdict seems to be tbe settled one of tlio people. Wo know of sever al cases or bteacb or the 6th commandment, while looking it his gorgeous displays or goods.
