SLAVE-CAtCHERS bafflud. was a wood Joel i excitement ia Me- ; ul vicinity, on Tuesday last, caused by u attempt oa tb part of sonic EVntuckiansi (aecornptaiei bj a Deputy Marshall from Cin cinnati, and Capt. John Pofflnharger. of Urbana, Deputy Marshall for this county) to arrtat a fa gitivs Save, named Addison, who baa beau liv iaf ia tba aijLborbol tot torn sii months Quite early ia tea aeorsitg, the party, compoaad of five Ksntuckitnisad tba two Deputy MarthaHs, i a daaoaot upon the cabia of Mr. Hyde. i frvta tba barf, where lire colored man, AJcrieon, resided. Mtking known the objacl af tbair visit, aad reading their warrant , Mr. Hyde tokl them that Addiaoa wm there, and interposed do objecteoo to hie arreat. Addiaoa in tba ettaa tires, bad takes refuge in tba loft of the cabin, through a bole barely tuffi event to admit hi huge body, be being a remark' ably large and atout negro. Soon oco of tba Kentucky rsetleroeri mounted the ladder, wilt doable barreled gun in bead, to aaeend to the loft. He had icaraaly got bead and shoulders through the bole when Addison firel upon him, the ball inking the gnn in front of the Keetuckian's breast aod glanced off, which aared hit life. Tbie reception cauaed the chivalrous Kentuckian to descend the ladder a good deal faster than be, wont up, and finding that ha was not killed, fired up the bole through the roof, aod retreated from the house. By tliia time the courage of the party had fairly ooieJ out at the ends of their fiagata, aod no further attempt was made to ascend the loft. In the meantime, Mr. Hy. latent hit little girl to a neighbor to inform him of what wm going on. The party tried to deter the girl from going, but the defied their threats aod went on Word soon went to town, and in a short time quite a crowd came out to the rescue. The brag gadocia spirit of the slave-catchers wm properly resents. J, and finding that they had got into tba wrong diggios to catch fugitives, the whole party left in double quick time. Addison, the fugitive, has been living in the neighborhood for some six months. He got oft the cars at Af.echsnicsbu.rg, being unable to go further for want of funds. Finding employment, ba concluded to remain there until he made euough to send for his wife and children, who where still in Kentucky, but free, Some tirao since his wife wm written to. It is supposed that Um letter wm intercepted, and by that means bis master cam to tba knowledge of his where abouts. Addison is still in the neighborhood, fully armed, and determined never to be token alive He ia a powerful man, able to whip half a dozen of slave-catchers in sinjle combat. Our infor mant Mjsbe can raiso a barrel of whiskey over his head with great erne, a "out that but few men are able to perform. Whether any further at tempt to arrest Lira will bo made remains to be Wooder if this flrst effort on the part of our excellent Democrat Deputy Marshall, Po ffihbar out, will not satisfy him that this business of catching fugitives, is rather critical.-"Urbana Ciliten and Gazette." A PANTHER FI8TICUKFED AND BOOT ED TO DEATH. Mr. W. R, Stockend, a sinewy, stout, active yonng Scotebman, associated m fanning with Mr. T. Linklater, Tenshiuot Plains, in this county, recently killed quite a large panther, six feet seven inches in length, in a fair fist and boot fight, the circumstances attending which are related as fol lows: It seems that at the further ami of a large field, about a quarter of a mile from the beats, Mr Stockend discovered quite a movement and dm. turbance among a lot of bogs that were kept in the field . He at once proceeded in the diseetion to ascertain the cause, when, to his surprise, at short distance from the hogs, be discovered that a favorite young dog wm engaged in a conflict with a panther. Determined te save the dog, at II hsxards, lie resolved to interpose in the flght,ex peeling to frighten the panther up a tree that stood hard by, when he could return to the house for his rifle and bring it down. Ha accordingly gave the animal a substancial kick, when H ceased ha engagement with the dog, straightened itself erect on Us bind legs and pitched into him. In tba meantime the young dog made a hasty retreat rW some distance. The contest now seemed to be a desperate and , , . ana very unequal one, but there was no escape from it for friend Stockend. The panther mad a furious dash at him, but retaining his full presence of mind, be met it with a furious kick. The fight now resumed the character of a "rough and tum ble." and a voile) of well directed blows and kicks disabled the animal somewhat. He called his dog back, and the UiUiful young animal, m if ashamed of having deserted his master in the hptT of peril, and m if to make amomls for bis ungrateful conduct, entered into the conflict with uneqaaleti fierceness, Mr. Stockend finally succeed. ed in getting one foot firmly planted apoa the Beck of his assailant, and keeping the other in upil notion in the direction of the animal's bead soon brought the contest to a close. He hn no d jubt but the long heavy boots which he bad on were the means of saving his life. Tba fight lasted, first to last, about fifteen inm ates in the course of which Mr. Stockend wm somewhat severely handled. His shoulder wm badly roratebed be received a severe wound from the teeth of the animal m the thigh and was badly scratched in several places, although by no Means dangerously, or by which be will here after be disabled.
