Douglas, a well-to-do re tired farmer, who resided at 490 Harrison avenue, ended his life Monday afternoon by hanging himself in the stable on his lot Since last winter he had been suffering with cancer of the face and it is supposed this so preyed on his mind that rather than en dure prolonged suffering, he de cided to end it all. He had care- fully laid his plans, Monday forenoon he seemed quite cheer ful and helped Mrs. Douglas with the family washing, but after dinner he insisted on Mrs. Doug las going up town and attending to a little business for him. This she reluctantly did. After she had gone, he dressed himself in his best clothes and was last seen by a neighbor going to his stable. This was about 3 o'clock Monday afternoon. He stood on an ash can, it seems, tied a rope to rafter, then around his nec and kicking the can from under him, slowly strangled to death. The act was premeditated, for he left a note in the house, which Mrs Douglas found on her return home about 5 o'clock,' in which he stated he wished to be buried in the suit he had on, burial to be in Teejzarden cemetery, in a cas ket not to cost over $100, and on his person. Upon finding this note, Mrs. Douglas at once gave the alarm, going acrops the street to Mr. Uhde's residence, where she was told Mr. Uhde last seen Mr. Douglas going to the stable. A search was at once made and heVas found, as above stated, cold in death, denoting that he had been dead about two hours. His body was at once cut down and efforts made to resuscitate him, but all in vain. The de ceased was a highly respected citizen, a veteran of the Civil war, having been a member of the 69th Cavalry, and a life-long citizen of the county, IK was born near Coletown on January 13, 1848, and was 68 years, 10 months and 7 days old.
