R. I. S. "One-Egg Cake." This makes a very good cake, and not very expensive : One egg, one cup of sugar, one and a-half cups of flour, six tablespoonfuls of melted butter. If you use baking powder, take a heaping teaspoonful ; if not take one-half tea spoonful of soda and one of cream of tartar ; flavoring. Allie and Kate. Preparing; TomttHi for tha Table. Minnie Lyon wishes to know howto take grease out of silk. Procure some pul verized French chalk of the apothecary ; rub on the spot ; hang in a dark place, and the grease will disappear.-Jennie L. CPERIOaFLOCR PASTE. When domestic paste is made, the material is frequently injured by scorch ing, or by the addition of too much wa ter. Good paste, when spread on paper. will not strike through it like water, but will remain on the surface, like butter on a piece of bread. To make paste of a superior quality that will not spoil when kept in a cool place for several months, it is necessary to add dissolved alum as a preservative. When a few quarts are required, dissolve a dessert spoonful of alum in two quarts of tepid water. Put the water in a tin pail that will hold six or eight quarts as the flour of which the paste is made will expand greatly while it is boiling. As soon as the tepid water has cooled, stir in good rye or wheat flour, until the liquid has the consistency of cream, see that every lump of flour is crushed, before placing tne vessel over the nre. To prevent scorching the paste, place over the hre a dish-kettle or washboiler, partly filled with water, and set the tin pail containing the material for paste in the water, permitting the bottom to rest on a lew large nails or pebbles, to pre vent excessive heat. Now add a tea spoonful of powdered resin, a few cloves to flavor the paste, and let it cook until tne paste has become as thick as "Gra ham mush," when it will be ready for use. Keep it in a tight jar, and it will last for a long time. If too thick, add cold water, and stir it thoroughly. Such paste will hold almost as well as glue. Manufacturer and JSta.'der. DOMESTIC HINTS. Stale bread and biscuit can be made to taste almost as fresh as new, by dip ping in warm water and heating for a short time in an oven. If a loaf of cake has become rather too stale for the table, moisten it a little, and then heat it through in the oven. In preparing starch, either boiled or cold, add a little fine salt. It imparts a brilliancy to the linen, and prevents the flat from sticking while ironing. Woolen articles should be washed in very hot suds and then rinsed in hot water. Cold or luke -warm water cause them to shrink. New iron ware should be gradually heated at first, for otherwise it is apt to crack. All cooking utensils of brass should be cleaned with salt and vinegar, before using. Kntves and forks of steel should be wrapped in strong brown paper, as cloths injure them when they lie in them a long time. A careful saving of all bits of cloth and assorting of white and colored pieces to De sold lor a tew cents per pouna, is an economy which all house keepers should attend to. - An unwholesome odor can be remov ed from a room by burning within it sugar or ground corlee. An effectual method of removing onion scents from the breath is to eat a little fresh parsley, or orris root. To remove lime which gathers jn tea kettles, fill the kettle with water, put in one-fourth of a pound of Spanish whiting and boil till the lime is removed. GIVE THE POn.TUT WARM QUARTERS. Now is the time to arrange your poultry-houses for winter ; don't wait until winter is here. Make their houses as warm as you possibly can, and when eggs get up to forty or fifty cents a dozen, they will repay you for all your care and expense. If possible, place their house on the south side of the barn or Bheds, so that it will be protected as much as possible from the cold, bleak north and northwest wind. A good plan is to plank up the outside with plank, and upon the inside nail up with any odds and ends of boards, and fill the space with sawdust, ehavings, mortar, or in fact anything that will keep out the wind. Keep everything thoroughly clean about poultry. Kansas Farmer. Mowua a pro pasture lasds. The extreme beat and drought of the past season have been unusually se- much mowing land, in many instances burning and killing ont the roots, and leaving bare spots which will fail to produce any, except inferior vegeta tion, the coming season, unless atten tion be given it either in breaking up or reseemng in some other practical way. w ouia it not wen pay all who nave either pastures or mowing -........ ."ti d i eui'u uare spots, to give thema good harrowing with a harrow withsharp teeth, give a top-dressing and sow on grass seed this fall, and bush it in as soon as there is moisture sufficient in the soil from fall rains ? I think so, especially on soil that does not heave much from winter freezing, even if the top-dressing is simply any good soil, in the lack of old compost or fine manure ; let it be done this month and there will be a good product next sea son. If from any cause it is not practi cable to do it this fall, let it be done as soon as the soil will admit next spring in that case it would be better to apl ply the manure as top-dresslnic lam this tall, or early during winter. If the whole work be thoroughly and season- ably done, instead or there being un sightly and unproductive patches scat tered here and there in the mowing and over tne pastures, me whole will he covered with good feed and valuable grass, without any- loss of use of ground, or what is worse, spots to grow weeds and weed seed or bushes, to disseminate their kind in- other places. For pastures there should be a varie ty of grass seeds coining to maturity at different times during the season ; and on either past tire or mowing the seeding should be heavy enough to oc cupy the soil at once; this we have found the best antidote or preventive of weeds in grass ground, for unless there is a full aud strong growth of grass there will be weeds to occupy the Birjnd and 'hey are very apt to over shadow and injure the grass. Find ont what your 8afo Is filled with BY Oar Patent we entirely obviate all oblections. as we use a perfectly dry filling, composed of Dry Calcined Plaster of fans ana Alum, we pack mis mixture Be tween tne inner ana tne outer cases, wnere it remains unohansed an v number of years. until fire melts the alum I which contains a large quantity of water) and thus saturates tne piaster ana iorms tne steam wnicn al ways preserves the contents of the safe. The plaster, by being wet. sets firmly : and even if the alum near the outside is entire ly melted, it forms cells which retain the precise shape of the lum ps of alum, and the filling of plaster keeps the safe as well filled as before the fire. The advantages of using a dry filling are very apparent, via : It does not mould the contents of the safe ; it never can rust tbe iron : It will always remain derfectiy fire-proof.
