40,000 kitų vietos žmonelių ti

palinkę Maskvą, Stalino gar

engaged in the most wicked swap
in history. It is siphoning into slav
ery the righful owners of Lithuania
and is filling their places with usurp-'
ers.
The Communists are using Lith
uania as a dumping ground for the
wounded Russian soldiers. As the
country has been devastated by war
and the Red terror, many" buildings
are dilapidated and fields choked
with weeds. Means of livelihood are
so scarce that these crippled vete
rans live in complete poverty as
beggars. Thus Mother Russia re
wards her injured fighters, by send
ing them to a poorhouse.
In addition to settling cast-off
veterans, Moscow is attempting to
colonize the emptied territories. Ap
proximately 400,000 Soviet nationals

depot has been destroyed, the pa
tients are placed on the grourtd and
left shelterless untij someone noti
fies their families.
I charge that the Soviet govern
ment is embarked on a premeditated
policy of piecemeal murder of the
entire non-Communist Lithu a n i a n
people. If the drain on the depleted
population is kept up a few more
years, the country will be emptied of
its inhabitants. Its scattered people
will vanish from the face of the
earth. Lithuania is worse than a
prison, it is a tomb.
Under the title "RUNNING FOR
PRESIDENT", James Metzenbaum,
former member of the School Board
and of the State Senate, has writ
ten twelve articles which have re
cently appeared in The Cleveland
Plain Dealer.
He covered every election since
that of George Washington, and
has pointed out that though there
is great honor in being President,
almost each one who has occupied
that position, has left it, as a sad
dened man usually penniless al
most one-fourth having passed away
naturally or by assassination, dur
ing office.
In his final article, ,Mr. Metzen
baum wrote:
"To be sure, them is very high
honor in being President of the
United States and great opportuni
ty to render service to one hundred
and forty mijlion fellow citizens. It
is a position which should always
be looked upon as being possible
for the humble as well as the rich
to attain, yet it may not be inap
propriate here to repeat some of
the opening lines of the first of
these 12 articles:
"This year will bring the forty
first election. The successful can
didate will be not only President
of the United States, but, in many
respects, virtually President of the
WORLD.
"Thirty-two men have occupied the
Presidency, a lonely, crushing, dis
illusioning position.
"Daniel Webster, Henry Clay,
James G. Blaine, Horace Greeley,
Stephen A. Douglass, William Jen
nings Bryan, fruitlessly spent much
o
i their lives in the hope of cap
turing that ęoveted position their
chief reward having been grief,
frustration, bitterness and dejection.
"To many of those who have suc
ceeded, the Presidency has spelled
broken health, deep pain, and dis
appointment, with not many years
after leaving."

The bulk of the new peasants on
collective farms are Mongolians, the
half-civilized Orientals, whose pres
ence terrifies the residue of Lith
uanians, who have not yet been
evicted. Thus by a cruel exchange
of populations Russia is scattering
the flower of Lithuania through
Asia and is bringing the scum of
Asia into Europe.
Russia's thirst for vengeance to
and against Lithuania is not satis
fied by eviction, enslavement and
extermination of natives of that
country. She is trying to get her
claws into America. Soviet consu
lar officers in the United States
in the past few weeks have the ef
frontery to claim the right to ap
pear in probate proceedings in be
half of Lithuanians abroad, with re
spect to shares due them from es
tates of persons dying in the United
Statei,
As we have never recognized the
incorporation of Lithuania into the
Soviet Union, our State Department
is warning state courts to -reject
the Russian demands.
But a much more tragic intrusion
into American lives is the insistence
of Moscow that American-born wives
and children of Lithuanian nationals
are Soviet citizens and hence can
not leave any part of the USSR, in
cluding Lithuania. For many months
I have been trying to* aid relatives
of a Worcester-born mother and her
five children in efforts to obtain
their release from Siberia. Only
last week I received a letter from
the State Department reporting fai
lure again. But I shall keep trying
to save them.
Our New England conscience never
can rest so long as such monstrous
evil is the fixed policy of a so-called
civilized State. Think of it, a girl
born within fifty miles of this build
ing deprived by Communist Russia
of her inalienable right to the pur
suit of happinesp, to liberty and,
maybe, to life itself.
Such is the agony of Lithuania,
which I have sketched in sombre
colors mixed with blood and tears
in order that Americans should be
aware of the facts. For when the
truth is known, others beside our
selves may sympathize and join the
cause of Lithuania.
I should be holding out false hope
were I to forecast the early salva
tion of the land of your fathers.
Direct intervention by the United
States would mean war. We can,
however, hope that our pleas and
an aroused conscience of the world
will impel officials of the United Na
tions in New York to take the case
of Lithuania from the pigeonhole
and bring it before the Security
Council.

attention of the American public
and thus stimulating favorable ac
tion. Give encouragement to Minis
ter Zadeikis in his noble efforts to
represent the real Lithuania.
Recent legislation by Congress,
opening the doors to Lithuanians
in Displaced Persons camps, is a
start in the rescue process. We
know by reports from the under
ground that recent messages of the
"Y'oice of America" have given the
patriotic resistance movement in the
Lithuanian republic the feeling that
their American friends have not
forgotten them.
