The Cardinals completely domi nated the play throughout the con test with their defense clicking to perfection in the first half when they held the Red Raiders without a field goal. Center Dick Fort, who is develop ing into one of Shaw’s all-time cage greats, connected for 22 points to bring his four-game total to 69 for an average of 17.1 per game. Forward Dick Henderson, a scrappy senior with a terrific amount of energy, potted 21 markers to bring his four-game total to 51 points. The local basketeers held a 14-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased the margin to a com manding 29-7 margin at halftime. The Cardinals poured in 22 points in the third period to take a 51-18 lead before Coach Wisecup cleared the bench of substitutes. Fort’s total would have been even higher had he not been forced to leave the game on fouls with one minute left in the third stanza. Seventeen of Shaker’s 29 points were scored from the foul line with Center Dick Danka connect ing for five straight charity tosses before missing. Henderson was even more adept on his free throw attempts, splitting the meshes for seven in a row. The East Clevelanders’ only glar ing weakness after four games is in their reserve strength but the second stringers are improving with experience and should be able to perform adequately after they have seen a little more action. Tom Meinhardt and Duane Gera simos are coming along nicely at the guard positions and are learn ing rapidly to control the ball on rebounds. Offensively, the Cardinals leave little to be desired as their present average of 54.3 points per game will attest. They will be idle this week, returning to action on De cember 29, when they will travel to Lima, Ohio to meet Lima Central and Cincinnati Western Hills on successive nights. More informa tion on these two new opponents on the Shaw cage schedule will be forthcoming next week. The Shaw JV’s will not play again until January 6, when they meet the Lorain JV’s in a prelimi nary game to the Shaw-Varsity game. The local sophomore quintet has also won three straight since dropping their opening game with Collinwood. Flashes Beat Koenigs Sr Diamond's Men Shop tied last week’s new scoring record last night by scoring 61 points against Nela Park GE team. Feisley kept GE in the game with 13 points. Bob Kelly, captain of Diamond’s, found the mark for 24 points and was assisted by Bud Boylan, who scored 12 and Frank Noble, who made 11. Al Ziehm’s threatened Ander son Springs Co. (formerly Pain ton’s) by holding them to a 15-15 tie at half time. Anderson’s high scorers, Kavannaugh and Knapp, were held to 14 and 10 points, re spectfully but Andersons scored 33 points in the last half to de f-e a Zeihms, 48-32. Kwiram, Zeihms, center, was “off” last night, although he lead his team with 8 points. The evening's excitement was provided by Calvary Church and Dyke Spencerian school. These two teams played a well matched game which made the spectators feel they were watching ping pong in the last few minutes by thf baskets being scored at opposite goals. Both teams scored furious ly in the last three minutes but when time ran out, the score was tied, 40 all. 13oth teams made 4 points during the over-time period but it was Paliwoda, whose fou shot broke the tie and won the game for Spencerian, 45-44. Herl Honrath, last year’s high scorer scored 12 for Calvary while Nich ols lead Dyke with 17 points. The Fenn Flashes further proved themselves contenders by easily out distancing Koenig’s Sport Goods, 45-32. Koenigs n e v e i threatened the Flashes lead. Dick Clucas lead Koenigs scoring with 10 pointe, while little Red Ashei sparkled for Fenn, making 12 points on offense and breaking up Koenigs’ passing game. The Fenn Flashes may well be a fly in the ointment in round one in Sr. “B.” There will be no games in Sr. “B” next week due to the Christ mas holiday. Standings at vaca tiem time are as follows: Class Cage League Given First Lessons The East Cleveland Class Basketball League held its organi zational meeting at the Shaw Gym last Saturday afternoon with 50 boys and the Shaw varsity cage squad in attendance. The meeting was held under the joint leadership of Bill Markell, East Cleveland YMCA physical di rector, and Bob Keefer, East Cleve land sports writer, who has been appointed the league director. Mr. Keefer described the purpose and rules of the league, broke the ap plicants down into six squads and assigned names and coaches foi each team. It w’as decided to limit the team roster to ten players each, none to be over 14 years of age and only two of whom can be tallei than 5 feet 4 inches. Coach Roy Wisecup demonstrated the funda mentals of the game with the aid of his varsity squad and some of the basic rules of basketball were pointed out by Mr. Keefer. Mr. Ken Bolmeyer, speaking on behalf of the East Cleveland Ex change Club which is sponsoring the league, spoke briefly, stressing the desire on the part of the or ganization to promote junior bas ketball locally. The teams worked out briefly under the guidance of their respective coaches to round out the two-hour session. Furthei information on the league will published in next week’s issue the Leader. 669 East 185th St. KEnmore 0431 Specializing In:— BODY BUILDING. REDUCING, SWEAT BATHS.
