Eerney Magneson leaves for his new duties on the coaching staff at Steubenville (Ohio) Juni or High School and Amos Hay den is the new commander of Fiast Cleveland Post 163 American Legion. Y Merchants win the season’s A League softball championship with the Musical Jesters runners up. Senator Robert A. Taft spoke at an open meeting of the Kiwanis club. The city announces a one mill cut in its taxrate for the year. Cook Cleland wins his second Thompson Trophy race with a speed of 397.71 miles per hour to surpass his 1947 record of 316.131. Dr. Dudley Uphoff arrives from Green Bay, Wis. to be pastor of the Phillips avenue Presbyterian church. Virginia Baldwin leaves from Windermere Methodist church to become a missionary in India. Ten East Clevelanders lose their lives as the S. S. Noronic burns at its pier in Toronto. Maynard Burkhardt, 14616 Do ver ave. enrolls at Western Re serve University on a 104-year-old scholarship which is accepted by the university as he agrees to hand it over to them. East Cleveland Kiwanis spon sors its fourth new club for the year, Cuyahoga Falls. Proceeding this were the clubs in Maple Heights, Bedford and Northeast Cleveland. Shaw students move into the East stand at Shaw Stadium in a new seating experiment which turns that stand over to the stu dent bodies of home and visiting schools. OCTOBER Hundreds of citizens attend City Hall’s open House to learn what makes their local government “tick”. Every de partment was “on parade” for two days. Dr. L. L. Myers principal of W. H. Kirk Jr. High School is 1 elected president of the East Cleveland Kiwanis Club. Its the 95th birthday for Joseph Dory who celebrates the event in the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Kramer, Nelaview rd. Shaw High Schoo! holds its first all in one fund raising cam paign from which to meet the several calls which come to it during every school year. A total of $780 was received. A lovely landmark—the white frame Walworth house at 14523 Euclid ave. is razed in keeping with the wish of its last resident to carry the family name, An toinette Walworth. Patrolman Harold R. Bode wins a scholarship to attend the Traffic Institute at Northwestern and another police department bit of news, Lieut. Thomas G. O’Brien quietly notes a quarter of a cen tury’ of service. Mr. and Mrs. Minor B. Gray observe their 60th wedding anni versary in the home they have occupied since the days when Mr. Gray was one of John D. Rocke feller sr’s farmers. NOVEMBER November was a busy tnonth in East Cleveland and news came thick and fast. Fifteen thousand people turned out to help the East ness Association celebrate the new Hayden ave and the Board of Education received a windfall in the sum of $47,000 due to over anticipated receipts in the normal tangible tax returns. Cleveland Busi- Grant T. Apthorp. Director of Finance^ was selected by City Manager Chas. A. Carran to be the new vice-manager, succeeding Edward A. Binyon. Mr. Binyon retained his position of Director of Law. Shaw’ High School 1927 to 1930 graduates held their first reunion since diploma day with 150 spend ing an evening dancing and re miniscing. The City begins using a load a-meter to check the weight of trucks traveling the city’s streets. For the first time in its his tory, the national convention of Girl Scouts welcomes delegates from among the girls and Mari lyn Groenstein (Troop 166) and Margaret Hansen (Mariner Ship 12) ara the Greater Cleveland delegates. Within a fortnight after ar riving in'America Dr. and Mrs. Nagelis and family celebrate their first American Thanksgiving, giv ing thanks for the end of DP days. The family is from Latvia. Following a survey by the Safety Division of the Police De partment, traffic lights are added to Superior rd. at Edgerton and Glenmont intersections. Shaw High School student body observes Armistice Day by de dicating their new flag and flag pole, the gift of East Cleveland Post 163 American Legion. Faith Evangelical and Reformed Church observes its 85th birthday, a pageant depicting its illustrious history. Voters retain Richard S. Horan. Richard Rice and Walter Sutter as city commissioners in the first opposed election for this office in a decade. The runner-up was Tho mas (Ollie) Troescher, making his first bid for an elective municipal office. A testimonial dinner is given to honor Cook Cleland, twice winner of the Thompson trophy in the National Air Races. YMCA spon sored, the affair is attended by more than 300 friends and admir ers of the famed aviator. DECEMBER Mrs. Zoe Brun dage, Dean of Girls at Kirk Jr. High School is elected to the ex ecutive board of the Ohio Associ of Women, repre ation of Deans senting the Junior High division. Rev. James E. Hunton finishes his first year as pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene. Boys of 15 and under who like basketball are happy. The Ex change club sponsors a Class team for them under direction of the’East Cleveland YMCA Russell H. Reeves, news editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer is ap pointed to the East Cleveland Li brary Board to fill out the un expired term of Phil B. Rhoades, deceased. For the first time since World War II Christmas decorations blaze forth in all their glory at Nela Park and the familiar Christmas tree appears in lights on the north wall of Shaw High School. Rev. M. Dean Shaffer celebrates his silver anniversary as pastor at St. James Lutheran Church. Fred Blackburn, 1370 Shawview ave., is first place winner in the Kiwanis Club’s first Go To Church contest.
