After all, one- has to get a tour ist permit, a car permit, luggage inspected, and wait until a Mexi can washes his car. However, I learned later that the more I tipped the inspector, the faster I would have gotten through. It seems as if everything is run in the same manner. A car permit is free, but it is handled mote efficiently and quickly if an American dollar is presented to the official typing your permit. There would always be two or three men doing the job of one and making things much more confusing than they already were. The luggage barrier encoun tered added to the misunderstand ings already made. After somehow managing to go through the trying but comical customs, I went through the border town of Nogales and on into Mexico itself. Many things that are strange and different to our way of life were seen. One of the outstanding scenes along the highway was the ex treme poverty encountered. People live in what could hardly be called shacks. The houses are rundown and unkempt. There is garbage in a pile a short distance from the dwelling. There is little, if any, furniture. These environments can not be described by word of mouth. One has to see this dire poverty before it can be fully realized. These people outside the cities live in the worst kind of squallor imaginable. Along the highways in northern Mexico, which is semi-arid with very little vegetation, graze many, many cattle. They seem to enjoy the grassland along the highway much more than that off the road. It behooves one to be extremely careful when driving, for if one of these animals is hit, the owner expects a substantial considera tion. Then there is the lowly burro, an animal with a mind all its own. Nobody tells him what to do or shows him where to walk. If he’s standing in the middle of the road, nothing is going to make that creature move. The cattle and horses of Mexico seem to be mixtures of every breed, as are the dogs, which Mexicans I BARRETT SHINCLE ROOF Weather stays strictly outride when your boose has the extra protection of a Barrett not I That’s because Barrett Shingles are made of the higheat-quality, laboratory-tested materials, thoroughly waterproofed and heavily mineral surfaced to resist the elements. If one is hit on the road, it may cost the driver over twenty American dollars. Besides the Mexican’s love for animals is their love for a cer tain well-known American soft drink. They drink it like water. No matter how primitive a place may be, no matter how* poor, it will have a beverage sign and cooler. Everything advertises it. On the police stands, on streets signs, and even on the town jails. A Mexican is rarely seen without this beverage bottle,,and even the horses are seen with them tied to the saddles. Another fascinating way of the Mexican people is their gas sta tions. While the gas is being put into the tank, one boy will check the water, another the oil, another will wash the Windows, and there is always one to sell you soft drinks. You pay for each item separa tely. Usually there is an eleven or twelve-year-old boy, or some times a girl, who has been to school and does all the mathema tics for the entire gas station. There are always about fourteen people around to do the work of two or three men. This only adds to the confusion. However, we usually end up with what we asked for, and usually many friends are made. This truly is a land of con trasts. First, there is the topo graphical and vegetation contrast. Secondly, 'the contrast of poverty and plenty. Last, there is the con trast in prices and standards of living. In the North it is a country of desert. and rather flat, plateau like land. There are varieties of sage brush, cacti, and scrawny tiees. The roads are straight and fiat. Almost as soon as the Tropic of Cancer is crossed, there is a noticeable change. The vegetation becomes lush and green. It be comes denser and forms jungles. NOW! CLAIR AT E. 125th vV-. \?*7.y A# '.£3( V. we rC In the nfidst of these are immense banana plantations, in contrast to the North, where the only indus try is cattle-raising. Here, also, the land itself becomes higher and begins to roll more and form hills, and finally mountains. The second contrast is the most apparent of the three. In many towns people are striving toward progress and great gains. In others they are very indifferent. On one side of the street people are living in extreme squalor, while just across the road there are beautiful homes and business buildings. In Mexico people live in poverty within the sight of plenty. The federal government of Mexico is doing much to help. Irrigating arid farmlands and making them available at reason able rates is one of ths govern ment’s big projects. Last contrast is the inconsist ency of the prices. The inability of reaching all the people within a short time has made uniform prices impossible. In some places a soft drink will cost one peso (8 cents, American money) and in other places only 25 centervos (2 cents, American money). Most of the things bought are bargained. A peddler may not receive the same price for the same article in a whole day. It all depends on whether he can out-talk the buyer. Although this country appears backwards and primitive in many ways, it is also advancing rapidly in other respects. Progress can be seen amidst poverty.
