Payments Social security payment* to some elderly couples will be com bined into a single family check next month. A. W. Boehringer, manager of the East Side district office at 10002 Euclid ave., made this announcement today. Retired workers’ wives, who have filed claims since September, will have their wives’ benefit amounts combined with their hus bands* old age retirement checks where they are living at the same address. However, no combined husband-wife checks will be is sued where they are living apart, or vfhere part of the wife’s pay ment is based upon her own work record. Furthermore, separate checks will continue to be sent out where either is incompetent to handle money. Up until now, Mr. Boehringer said, each wife has been receiving her own check each month. For the present, combined checks will be issued only, as newly eligible wives receive their first payments, or where the couple’s benefits had been stopped and are being re sumed. This new procedure of pay ing husbands and wives by com bined checks will be extended to more couples receiving monthly retirement checks as soon as possible. The Social Security Adminis tration has combined benefit pay ments to children living in the same household into a single check since 1951. The procedure has re sulted in considerable savings. By combining husband-wife payments into a single check, the Govern ment will further cut expenses in issuing checks as well as relieving the mailing problem for the Post Office Department. Cashing a single government check will be simpler for many couples. Besides, if they’ve been paying fees to cash their checks, they will now have to pay only one fee instead of two. The cage action takes place in the Shaw Field House starting at 7 p. m. when the Junior Varsity Squads tangle. This year’s contest will mark the 31st meeting between the Rail roaders and Cardinals since the first contest in 1926. Last year Coach Joe Lesko’s lads turned in a 41-32 decision to make it 17 wins in the series. Coach Lesko of Collinwood and Coach Grant Kibbel of Shaw are still experimenting with various combinations so varsity berths are still wide open. Since both schools just ended their football activities lait week, a number of cage pros pects, no doubt are still trying to shake off football bumps and bruises which could bring about changes, in the basketball squad. Don Hicks On European Tour Cleveland Community Chest Red Feather agencies served 15,527 Euclid area residents during the past year, according to a study re cently completed by the Research Department of the Cleveland Wel fare Federation. In the study, the services of the Chest’s 125 agencies were broken down into four classifications Group Work and Recreation, Health and Rehabilitation, Casework for Adults and Children, and a miscel laneous category. Group Work and Recreation clas sification posted the largest number of Euclid area names. The report showed that 8,892 local people used the services of the Young Men’s Christian Association, and 7,630 boys were active in the Boy Scouts. Euclid women also figured prom inently in the Group Work category. The Young Women’s Christian As sociation has 814 women on their membership scrolls, while 1,527 young girls filled the ranks of the Girl Scouts. Euclid’s Campfire Girls numbered 321 and 49 local people were stu dents at Music School Settlement House. Nine persons took part in the group work at Karamu House. AU are Red Feather agencies. Under the Health and Rehabilita tion classification, 298 persons were treated by workers in the Visiting Nurse Association. Of those Euclid residents that have a speech or hearing handicap, 113 were treated at a Hearing and Speech Center. During 1955, 36 of Euclid’s blind were served by the Society for the Blind and 85 new people utilized the services of the Rehabilitation Center. According to the study, 177 Euclid area families would have had to live from day to day with unneces sary and undesirable problems if it were not for the work of a family service agency. Sixty-one young people found guidance at a youth serving casework agency, and 79 of the area’s children used the services of a children’s casework agency. These are only a few of the listings under thia category. The study’s miscellaneous cate gory was filled with two and three numeral figures on Euclid residents. For example, 176 local people were helped with their legal problems by the Legal Aid Society. Ae for peo ple who are not quite sure what job they are best suited for, 39 found guidance at the Vocational Guidance Bureau. Nationalities Services helped 25 of this area’s residents. These are only a few of the many items listed in this study. Cleveland Community Chest is again endeav oring to raise funds to continue these vital services. The annual Red Feather appeal this year starts Oc tober 15 and continues through the 25th. A challenging goal of $8,834, 000 has been set, and this figure represents only the minimum amount needed to continue Chest supported health and welfare serv ices in Greater Cleveland.
