Page Two Veterans Observe Garfield Birthday In conjunction with the Depart ment of Ohio, the Seventh District and the Cuyahoga County Council, East Cleveland Post 1500 VFW, helped observe National VFW Week. The special project, honor ing deceased Ohio Presidents on their birthdays, honored the mem ory of the 20th president, James Garfield. The ceremony took place Sunday. January 27th, at the Gar field Mausoleum in Lake View Cemetery. A resume of the president’s life was given by John Henry, Seventh District Commander, who was in troduced by Chester Koch. The Firing Squad was furnished by Fairport Post 7754, Woodrow Werbach, commander. Participat ing with Colors and Guards were Post 3362, John H. Allen, com mander Post 2079, Homer Wood, commander and Post 1500, Wm. Trenn jr., commander. The Seventh District was repre sented by Commander John Henry and Senior Vice Commander, James Weber. Gillespie, a junior majoring in history, is a graduate of Shaw High School. Two East-Cleveland residents were among 55 day division stu dents to win honors at Fenn Col lege, earning their place on the dean’s list for the fall quarter. Editor Is Guest the Wright Bryan, editor of Cleveland Plain Dealer, will speak to East Cleveland Kiwanis, Mon day noon, February 4th, at the Y House. He will select his topic from the current news-making events Mr. Bryan came to Clevelsnd on January 1, 1954 to assume the editorship of the Plain Dealer. He had been editor of the Atlanta Journal. The speaker is at present first vice-president of the Greater Cleveland Chapter of the Ameri can Red Cross and is a member of the Executive Board of the Cleveland Boy Scout Council. He is currently on the International Year Committee of the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. A Ro tarian, Mr. Bryan heads up that Cleveland club’s program commit tee this year. Capt. Willard L. Dougherty, Air Force Reserves and com minder of Information Services Flight, will speak on “The New Look” before the Tuesday noon luncheon of Exchange Club on February 5th. Deaths Robert D. Walter Services will be held Friday, with burial in Acacia Cemetery, for Robeit Walter who was stricken with a heart attack Tuesday. He is survived by his widow, Alice Stevens Walter two daugh ters, Elizabeth Jane and Roberta Anne his mother, Mrs. Sara Wal ter and a sister, Mrs. Bryan Archibald of Washington, D. C. Lefler-Watkins White gladiolas on the altar were the background for the marriage of Emily Hope Watkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. K. G. Watkins, 14641 Savannah ave., East Cleveland, to Mr. William A. Lefler, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Lefler, 869 Thornhill dr., Cleveland. The wedding was solemnized Saturday, January 26 th at an eleven o’clock high Mass in St. Philomena Church. Rev. George P. O’Hara officiated. The bride, escorted to the altar by her father, was lovely in a gown of Skinner satin. It was fashioned with a fitted bodice with long tapering sleeves and a portrait neckline bordered with shirred tulle. Shirred tulle and appliqued Alencon lace also bordered the bouffant skirt which swept into a Cathedral train. Her bridal bouquet was a white satin covered prayer book and stephanotis with a de tachable white orchid corsage. Attending the bride was Miss Carol Lubinsky as matron of honor, and the bride’s sister, Miss Lola Watkins as bridesmaid. Their waltz length gowns of nylon net over white taffeta were designed with Sabrina necklines. They carried white carnations with ribbons dyed to match their empire sashes, shoes and small veiled hats. The best man was Ronald Maloney and ushering was Don Medaglia.
