Tale In Kiwanis
Golf Playoffs
August is the month of cham
pions for the golfers of the East
Cleveland Kiwanis Club. The
golfing seasons begin early for
these battlers of the elusive
“par.” Starting with the an
nual Sno-Bird tournament in
February and followed by in
dividual, match-play, and medal
play tournaments, the club
champions are determined in
the month of August.
In the match-play champion
ship there are two flights of
competition. The first eight
qualifiers make up the class
“A” flight, while the remain
ing competitors are in the class
“B” flight. With matches run
ning through the months of
June, July and August the class
“A” finalists are Walter Koenig
and Dr. Lou Edwards.
The champion was to be de
termined yesterday, August
20th, at the Aurora Country
Club. In the class “B” flight
Merl Owens Jr., and Grant Kib
bel will be matched to see who
will play Russell Reigler for
the championship.
The medal-play champion
ship started in July wtih the
first round played at the Lan
derhaven Golf Club. The second
and final round will be played

International Kiwanis Golf
tournament held in Erie Pa.,
last week. With 156 partici
pants Tom Milligan’s net score
of 70 was runner-up and Dr.
Lou Edwards’ 72 was third.
President Wayne C. Blough
was runner-up in the low-putt
contest with 28 putts.

Rogers To Play
Center at Rutgers
Jim Rogers, a junior at Rut
gers University, ha* been con
verted from a blocking back to
a center. Because of a pulled
leg muscle his preseason drill
ing was limited.
As a result, by the time he
was ready for full scrimmaging
the blocking back positions were
satisfactorily filled. Since the
blocking backs and centers both
play line-backer on defense,
Bogers converted to the line.
He had been a fullback at
Shaw High School and a block
ing back with the Rutgers’
freshman eleven in 1956.
By exact count, Rogers ap
peared in only three offensive
plays all last fall, although he
earned his letter by playing reg
ularly on defense.
If Rogers progresses as ex
pected, the Scarlet should be
well fortified at center.
