Little League
The pattern of the Little
League title race in both the
Shaw Field and Superior Hill
divisions appears to be quite dif
ferent from the previous two
seasons since no one team seems
strong enough to be a consist
ent winner.
With no team having played
more than three games, each of
them has lost at least once and
all of the games, except two,
have been very closely contested.
Kennedy’s Men’s Shop, the
league champs in both 1957 and
1958, have split two close
games. They edged Diamond’s
Men’s Shop, 1-0, at Superior
last Friday on an unearned run
in the first inning which fea
tured a pitching duel between
Dick Lavik and Tom Evans.
On Monday night, the defend
ing titlists dropped an 8-7 de
cision to the Nelson Jewelers.
Both teams muffed several scor
ing opportunities, each of them
leaving ten runners stranded on
the bases. Kennedy’s got only
four hits off Jerry Watt, Nel
son’s starting hurler, who
walked eight and hit two bat
ters. Steve Bogas took over the
pitching chores for Nelson’s in
the seventh inning to get credit
for the victory which he person
ally engineered by reaching first
on a fielder’s choice, stole sec
ond and third and scored on
Greg Myles’ wild pitch.

Fisher Furnaces handed the
Fire Dept, its first loss of the
season at Shaw Field on Mon
day night, 5-3, by staging a
five-run uprising in the fifth in
ning. Tom Miklich, Fire Dept,
hurler, walked the first three
batters to face him in that
frame aid was tagged for a long
triple by Bob Juliano to knot the
score. Karl Schultz then took
over on the mound for the Fire
men but an infield single andean
error accounted for two more
tallies.
Pony League
Flynn-Froelk’s current 5-1
record gives them a half-game
lead over Hamilton Insurance
(5-2) for the Pony League su
premacy as the first half race
nears its end.
The Hamilton entry has won
its last four games, the big one
being a 2-1 decision over Flynn
Froelk at Shaw Field last wek.
Phil Bolton, Hamilton hurler,
Jiad a no-hitter going with one
out in the final inning, but was
tagged for a single by rival
pitcher, Jim Smalley, who then
scored the lone Flynn run on
Tom Krizman’s double. Smalley
gave up three hits and struck
out 13 while Bolton fanned eight
in his two-hit performance.
Kennedy’s Men’s Shop, 1958
champs, really opened up
against Edwards Funeral last
Wednesday to take an easy 20-1
victory in a game stopped after
five innings. Kennedy’s racked
up 15 hits with Pitcher John
Demnt leading the asualt with
a home run and three singles.
Fourteen of the Kennedy runs
came in the first inning when
18 batters went to the plate.
Colt League
Nela Florists need only one
victory in their next three
games to assure themselves of
at least a tie for the first half
Colt League championship.
The Florists appear to have
the “Indian sign” on their clos
est rival, the G. E. Lite Sox,
whom they have beaten twice
by one-run margins. In fact, the
Sox seem to specialize in one
run decisions, having played six
games to date, winning three by
one run and losing the other
three by the same margin. The
latest Lite Sox loss was by a
6-5 count to Nela at Pattison
Field last Friday. Denny Mast
erson went the distance for the
league leaders as he scattered
eight hits and got out of numer
ous scrapes As the game pro
gressed. His seventh inning
single broke a 4-4 tie and he
raced home with the winning
run a few minutes later on Joe
Billington’s solid single to
center.
