Last Wed nesday the Connell entry defeated the Edwards Funeral Home, 7-2, at Skat-, ing Rink Field for their 16th straight win of the 1961 sea son. This bettered the string of 15 straight games in the victory column which was turned in by the East End Nash nine which took the Pony League title last year, chalking up victories last day and again Monday of week, the current Connell ord, as of Tuesday night, 18-0 with two more games left on the ’61 schedule. The pacemakers of the pow erful Connell batting attack, which has averaged eight runs oer game, are Robin Caputo and Pat Visci who are two of the best players in the nine vear history of East Cleveland Pony League. Both boys are equally adept at pitching and catching to form a battery of outstanding 14-year-olds. Caputo has a current bat ting average of .563, the high est in the league, and his 27 hits include five doubles, three triples and five home runs. Visci, second leading hitter in the circuit, has a .540 av erage and his 34 six doubles, three two home runs. \dept At Base hits include triples and Stealing Both of the young athletes are daring baserunners—Visci has stolen 30 bases and Caputo has pilfered 23. In the pitching department. Visci has a 5-0 record while Caputo has compiled a 4-0 mark. The rest of the Connell starting nine is comprised of Pete Wolfgram, Roger Hor vath, Carl Schultz. Frank Jura tovac, Tom Baechele. Bernie Doyle. Len Ringenbach and Harold Brazie. A playoff series to determine the Colt League champion is now a certainty since the Ki wanis Club, first-half winners, have been eliminated from con tention for the second-half title. Merle Owen Funeral Horne, who have a 6-2 record n second-half play, can enter the playoffs by defeating the G. E. Lite Sox at Skating Rink Field tonight. Should the Lite Sox win tonight’s contest, how ever. they must then win their remaining two games to earn the chance to meet Kiwanis for the Colt League championship. Owens Beat Florists Merle Owen trounced Florists, 10-3, at Forest Tuesday .to take over place as they ran wild on the base paths to steal 12 base and drew seven bases on ball' to blend with seven hits. Art Philipp held the Florists three hits and struck out nine while teammate Denny Erne collected three singles in four trips to the plate. Tn a game called because of darkness after six innings of Hay, the Lite Sox handed thr Kiwanis Club their fifth 'traight loss. 6-3, at Skating Rink Field on Tue-day. The losers scored all of their hit arid runs in the first inning after which Jim Ball, the G. E. urler. settled down to pitch five hitless innings. The Lite ox took advantage of 11 bai-es on halls issued by a pair •f Kiwanis pitchers to account for their run output. The Fire Dept, was slated to face Koenig Sport Goods at Superior Hill last night and, if victorious, would tangle with the Police for the division title at Shaw Field tomorrow night. The Police nine finished its season on a happy note by de feating the Koenig entry. 5-3. in a seven-inning struggle at Shaw Monday evening. Trail ing 3-2 with two out in the sixth frame, Van Tyus, the league’s leading hitter who had struck out in his two previous plate appearances, was hit by a pitched ball. Don Kennedy, the Police pitcher, then singled to right sending Tyus to third. With Steve Grogan at the plate, Tyus then stole home with the tying run when the Koenig catcher returned the ball to the pitcher’s mound. By Fri this rec was Strikes Out 15 Joe Matulis, stocky Koenig hurler, had his fast ball buz zing past the Police batters for six innings during which he struck out 15 out of a possi ble 18 opponents. However, since Little League rules for bid a pitcher from hurling more than six innings per week, he had to turn over the pitching duties to Chris South wick in the seventh stanza. Jim Van and Chris Fejes opened the Police seventh with singles and a single by Jimmy Palozzi and a sacrifice fly by Dale Mills gave the Police nine a pair of tallies for their im portant victory. The Koenigmen had runners on base in every inning but the first when they went down on strikes but they were unable to come through with the timely hit they needed. Kennedy collected a home run and single to pace the six-hit Police attack while Southwick banged out two of the five Koenig hits. This Physical Fitness pro gram was in progress last sum mer under the volunteer super vision of Shaw and Kirk coach ing staffs. Shaw stadium was open for all East Cleveland boys five nights a week. Each boy was urged to participate at least three nights per week. Their physical fitness program consisted of weight training exercises, endurance and speed running, and drills. various agility Valuable weight training Proved The use of proved itself to be so gratifying in the aspect of increased strength and agility, the weight program was incorporated in Shaw’s regular boys’ physical education classes the second se mester of the school year. Each boy participated in the weight program the first 15 minutes of each class period. The re sults of the program proved to develop increasing arm, leg, neck and chest strength. Weight lifting was consid ered a “taboo” and a “muscle bound” program for many years. However, due to the re cent research of physical fit ness, the systematic weight lift ing programs have proved their worth. Members of the Cleve land Browns football team adapted the weight lifting and running program and many of (them attribute their increase jn weight and strength to this program. Officially Approved I Last summer’s program at Shaw Stadium and the physical fitness program conducted at Shaw High during the school year, proved to be so successful that the East Cleveland Board of Education formally approved a summer physical fitness pro gram to be held at Shaw Sta dium under the supervision of the Shaw High School and Kirk Junior staffs. High School coaching Cleveland’s Physical Program consisted of East Fitness eight weight lifting exercises for the purpose of developing arm, leg, neck, and chest strength, four agility and pro gressive running drills nightly. The running exercises consist ultimately of one mile for en durance and eight 50-yard clashes for speed and endurance. The main objective of the en tire program was to build strength, quick muscular reac tions, and speed of each par ticipant. The Physical Fitnese Pro gram ended last week.
