be better off cooking on a hot
plate in our room. This limited
my use of the kitchen to the
times when I had to use the
oven (which had no heat con
trol).
Cleaning one small room
would not seem to be much of
a chore, however, I soon found
that two people in one room
create the necessity for daily
dusting and almost daily sweep
ing.
An oiled dust rag from the
States solved the first problem.
Sweeping was not so easy,
since the broom they furnished
consisted of a bunch of straws
tied together at the top with no
handle.
Thus, a thorough sweeping of
the room was enough to give
me a slight backache for the
rest of the day.
The thing that amazed me
was the fact some of the clean
ing ladies in the building spent
long hours every day sweeping
the halls with such brooms.
Wash By The Numbers
There are two laundry areas
in the university building. The
first day I used one, the woman
in charge explained the ritual
to me as follows:
1. Rinse out your clothes
and scrub them by hand at large
tubs with washboards 2. Put
them in a little electric wash-

judged by the Committee and

nounced at the Sepptember pack
Meeting. All of the boys—win
ners and losers—will feed the
birds all winter.

Few Problems Mentioned
These examples give some in
dication of the problems I en
countered in an ordinary day
of housekeeping.
They are only a few of the
many things I could write about.
However, it was always im
portant for me to remember
that many things which seem
great hardships (or even mild
irritants) to me, would not be
viewed the same way by the
average Russian housekeeper.
For them, these were great
improvements over the hardships
of only a few years ago.
Therefore, judging from their
standards instead of my own, I
could see that we were living
in the midst of relative comfort
and convenience.
Don and Carol are now living in Letham, N. Y.
After the first of October, they will move to
Albany, N. Y., when Barry takes a job with New
York State.

The pastor’s chair, with
needle-point embroidery by the
late Mrs. Austin, is a gift from
Mrs. Allan S. Austin and Mrs.
James R. Stewart.
Early carved oak statuette of
St. Michael of the Angels in the
Chapel Foyer, is a gift from
Travis G. Walsh, in memory of
Mr. Austin.
Two Dedicated Lives
A half-century has passed
since Wilbert J. Austin and his
wife Ida Stewart Austin first
established their residence in
East Cleveland. Since that time
the influence of Mr. and Mrs.
Austin upon The Windermere
Methodist Church has been vir
tually continuous.
First as regular attendants
before transferring their mem
bership from the Broadway
Methodist Church, and subse
quently as dedicated members
of the Windermere congrega
tion, both exerted a broad in
fluence on the spirit and char
acter of the Church, and became
leaders in its affairs and
growth.
Windermere became a "sec
ond home” during their lifetime,
and served as the means
through which their friendly
hospitality was extended to
many visitors and newcomers
in the community.
Their enduring contribution
to the expansion of the church.}
and later to its rebuilding, to
gether with the responsibilities
they undertook through service1
on the Board of Trustees and
on the Music, Pastoral and
other Committees, made Mr.
and Mrs. Austin an influence
which lives on with their mem
ory. I
