KANSAS STATE NEWS. The Kickapoo Indian reservation in Kansas has been surveyed into eighty acre tracts for i lbtmenU Governor Humphrey will go to Ohio to attend the reunion of his old regi ment at Massillon, but he will not make any speeches, and will take no part in the Buckeye canvass. Lawrence. Journal: That times arc hard in Kansas ia well illustrated by the fact that two leading citizens of Independence had trouble over a game, the limit to which was 25 cents. The first sample of Kansas sugar tested this year at the chemical la ora tory at Fort Scott, came from the Medicine Lodge factory and ' was found to contain 90 per cent of glucose. This grade entitles the factory . to govern 'ment bounty.' The national headquarters of the Sons of Veterans, which have be located in Topeka for the past year were moved last week to New York City, where the new commander-in-chief, Barlow S. Weeka, and Adjutant General It. Tobias and Quartermastor General J. V. B. ClarkBon will take charge. Desirous of extending the purposes, as well as knowledge, concerning the Ottawa Chautauqua assembly, the management has decided to maintain in the Assembly Herald hereafter to be published as u monthly, a depart ment of social science, with Mrs. ftoble S. Prcntis of Newton, in charge. The report of the warden of the'state penitentiary to the auditor of stute shows the expenditures for the month of August to have been $11,702.07 and the receipts $8,049.03. Expenditures oyer receipts, $3,653.04. The amount of coal supplied to state institutions and sold during the month was 11 1,(58 1 bushels. The whole amount of coal mined at 'the penitentiary since the opening of the mines at that institution is 13, Kit), 490 bushels. The name Emporia, which is Dome by one of the prettiest towns in Kan sas, was suggested by G. W. Brown, a Pennsylvanian who settled in Lawrence in an early day. His native town was called Emporium, a word which signi fies a trade center. In the entire world thero are but three cities besides Em poria, Ks., bearing the same name one in Nebraska, one in Florida and one in Virginia. It is needless to add that the Kansas Emporia is the best town in the lot, and is a credit to its name. Kansas City Star. The new bank law of Kansas goes into effect September 21st, and there after the banks that are not operating under a national bank charter, will be under the supervision o? Charles F. Johnson, the state bank examiner. Some interesting facts concerning the Erogres6 of bank matters in Kansas ave been gleaned from Mr. Johnson, who states that up to date 14.) banks have complied with the law. Charters for new banks and for a re-organization of old ones under the new law arc pourinjr into the office of the secretary of 6tate in large numbers daily to be tiled for record. It has been estimated that tho farm ers ot Kansas will not receive less than $250, 000,000 for their products this .year. That may be a little steep, but to be perfectly safe, put the amount at $150,000,000 and then think of what that amount of money will do how much indebtedness it will pay; how many mortgages it will wipe out; how many improvements it will make; how much it will buy in the way of comforts and necessities which the farmers need. Kansas is going to get squarely on her feet this year and everybody is glad, because she has been so plucky and has so cheerfully taken the risks and as sumed the hardships which were nec essary in the work of developing the state. Kansas City Star. Frof. F. H. Snow's scheme of exter minating chinch bugs by artificial in fection has been introduced in Missouri. In a letter received at the university recently from EL J. Walters, professor of agriculture in the Missouri College of Agriculture, a partial report of the experiments conducted in the Stato is made. Eighty per cent of these are favorable, and of the rest some are doubtful owing to carelessness in fol lowing directions and inattention in muking.obsorvation. One oi the far mers, in reporting the result of his experiment to Prof. Walters, speaks as follows: "I used the infected material with best success' I think it is a great blessing to the farmers of Missouri that you are taking up this matter, and I am more than thankful for the beucfit I have received." Mies Kate Field is in receipt of a hys teric ietter from a New Yorker who signs himself "Eezrednad,'' asking nay, begging her to institute a reform in men's dress. Eezrednad dislikes the conventional dress suit for men because it has become the distinctive dress of the waiter and servant He says that a movement should be made looking to the introduction of a suitable dress for waiters other than a gentleman's dress suit; and he pleads to the ladies to take the matter in hand and insist upon a reformation. She replies through her paper as follows: "Women have enough to do to reform themselves. So long as they sweep the streets with their skirts and otherwise show a total lack of sense and cleanliness in their attire, it ill be comes a pot so much blacker than the kettle to labor with a stronger vessel. If. however, gentlemen would return to the knee-breeches of their grandfath ers, they never could be mistaken for their own waiters. Moreover, this change of garb would revolutionize manners and carriage. Trousers have made men careless as to physique and grace. Put them in knee-breeches and make them no longer ignore their calves or the importance of a manly gait and the deportment which should accompany a fine figure picturesquely clothed. Perhaps this is the reason they cling so persistently to the hideous but secretive pantaloon." The Boy to Blame.
