Never put your hands into butter. There is no excuse for so doing, and every sense ot cleanliness forbids it. The hands may be clean, but as butwr absorbs er err imourity with which it comes in con tact, excessive perspiration of the hands or any humor of tne blood might tail be imparted to the butter. A wooden ladle to lift the butter from the churn, or to turn it over while b.ung washed, answers just as well, and a vast deal better. Dispatches fron Washington Monday, state that Gov. Br the way. doctor, .what has become of Elder and tha Jtho- .HARD-MONEY DEMOCRACY. Siding two horses and sitting oatwo stools are proverbially dangerous opera tions. Yet the Democratic party is sol emnly advised to try that experiment again. All the world remember now nicely, the party succeeded in ISoO, wheu it attempted to bridge over the question of slavery in the territories, by ruuuiug Presidential Electors pledged to loie iu part for Douglas and in part fur Breck inridge, so that the election might be thrown into a Democratic Douse. Per haps it is not ktrange that individuals should be so inditlerent to recent expe rience and proverbial wisdom as to pro pose another trial of the eawe sort. But no one would expect a creat party to adopt such a suggestion a second time if that party had not become mure latuuua for the stupidity of iu blunders than anything else. The plan now submitted and gravely discussed iu Democratic cir cles or lnflluence, is that tue uciuocrauc party shall run a hard money candidate, and the Greenback party a soft money candidate, but that the two shall unite upon one set of electors in each state, with the agreement that the electoral votes Huall be cast for either candidate in proportion as the popular vote of the State fur cither party may be divided. There are trilling difficulties, of course, but these could be readily overcome. That the plan could be made to work, if each party consents, will not be doubted. Whether it will work-success or disgrace ful failure, as it did before, is not so clear. The recipe of ilrsGlcsa for cooking a hare began, "First catch your hare." It will be necessary, first of all, to get the soft money Democrats to consent that a soft money President, if elected at all, Khali be the candidate of the Greenback party. That would mean the disbaud mentof the Democratic party, tho elec tion mainly by Democratic votes ot the caudidate of a hostile organization, when the'same Democrat have the power to nominate euch a man as they want iu their own party convention. That the soft moner lunatics can control any cau cus or convention of-the Democratic party is indisputable. Within that par ty certain leaders have secured local or national prominence ; outside of it, in any new parly, other men would dispute with them for the leadership or manage ment. It would be very nice for Mr. Tilden or Mr. Baysrd to have Mr. Hen dricks consent to relax his grasp upon the Democratic party in Indiana, or Mr. Thurman in Ohio. But when they con sent, the hare may be caught. And when the sky falls we may all catch larks. The Republicans would be delighted to have this experiment tried again. Somewhere in Connecticut, it is possible, there is still in existence the stuffed skin ot a two headed calf, which did excellent service in tho campaign of ISGO as the emblem of Democracy two heads, but no hear.tor brains. A party which is en tirely destitute of principles or convic tioos should at least take care not to ad vertise the fact too widely. Under the proposed arrangement, all the soft money Democrats at the West would be dis. gusted with their party because of its open dicker with "the agents of the Rothschilds," and at the same time all the hard money Democrats would be out raged by the shameless barter of the par ty with repudictors. On the whole, we cannot think of a scheme which would more thoroughly how the utter dishon esty and lack of principle of the Demo cratic party. It is to be tery much re gretted that the fiat-money lunatics and stubborn rcpudiators are probably so hard headed so blindly and mistakenly in earnest that this otherwise promis ing dicker will probably fall through. The Republican party bns nothing to fear from any such thimble rigging. It stands on guard to defend the Nation s honor and its prosperity, as lor ir.e open opposition which it has to encoun ter, the llepublican party can take care ofthatquiteaswell if its foes are divided, and take pains to prove their readiness to sacrifice principles for spoil, as if they were honestly and heartily nnitcd. In short, experience teaches in the words of a Democratic journal thst "thpre are enough Democrats in the country for one party, but not enough for two. N. Y. Tribune A PETITION. As Mr. A. T. Stewart was in the abit, during his life time, of selling bills of goods, there is nothing astonishing iu the information that be once db-posed of $3, 000 worth toa merchant ef Alabama, but to the ubscqnent proceedings hangs a tale. Hearing that the purchaser imme diately disposed of the merchandise at a loss, Mr. Stewart brought suit against Ids creditor for obtaining goods under false pretenses. The Alabamian retorted with a suit for defamation of character, and, having an advantage ofahorr.e jury who did'nt object to seeing a rich sheep shorn, recovered a judgment for $25,000. The case has reached the Supreme court, and Mr. Hilton, who is supposed to have something to do with the management of the Stewart case, is nsiiiing nam to nave the judgment tet aside. An Alab.ima merchant with a reputation damaged to the extent of $25,000 ought to pass cur rent as a curiosity.
