MM ' -vi THE IOLA. BEG 1STER, FRIDAY AUGUST U 1001 I Hi V I Ono Katnullsiicii West of the llivoi Two More nre Pronnseil Sovcn Asked For In tlio County. DELINQUENT TAX NOTICE For sovorul months now Allen coun ty lias been patiently awaiting the coming of tho rural mall routo in Hpoctor who lius been heart! of on ev ery huwl und who has been promised horo repeatedly. Ho camo in Monday and lost no time in getting to work. Ills name is Thompson and he has been working in Dourbon county latoly. Accompanied by Postmaster Ilondor son he Monday drove over, inspect ed and approved the route asked for wost of the ijlver, of which George L. Jones is to be carrier. Jones' father worked up the routo and tho son, a 'Philippine veteran in an Iowa regi ment, will doubtless bo made carrier. Tho routo is us follows: Starting from Iola one mile westto Webster Green's;, ono mile north to Townsond's: wost one mllo to &arnharl's: north one and one-half milb to D. W. Jones'; west ono mile to county lino; south two and one-half miles to Plqua road; oust one mile to Cldridge place; souUi one mllo tb Paf'M'cCabo's; west 6ti'o mllo to countyllnti; south ono mile" to Rush's; east two miles to Win, Bolln's; north one mllo past Pock's; east ono mile to Stool's; south onomilo toU. B. church; oast ono mllo to Josh Butlor's: north two Tulles to tho lake and then to town. The routo is about twenty-four miles long. The second routo lies north and slightly west of town and Ben F. Wright, a son of'ri prominent Carlylo farmer, will probably be carrier. Tho routo as planned is as follows: Start inr from tho postotllce, it gets on tho north road just east of tho Lanyon smolterXo. 1. Then north seven miles to Vc.lo Bros.; east 1 mile to MoKol vey's, north 1 mile to Thompson's; wost 1 mile to Hiidermtiu's; north 1 miles to Dlckerson's, west 2 miles to Jasper Powell's; Kutth (i miles to Name Smith's; eust i mile to Scott Wilson's: south .'! miles to Horvlllo's, and then back into town. Tho third rural route asked for out of Iola was inspected Wednesday by lnapectoi'Thoinpton. This route covers the country north-east of Iola and will bo something over twonty miles in length, serving not less than 100 families. J. W. Johnson, of Iola, is now booked as carrier nlong the route and went over it with tho in spector, who reported .favorably on it, provided the government's condi tions are lived up to. Starting from tho post olllco, runs north on Kentucky street 1 mllo to Sleepers; east 1 mile to .las. Leake's north 1 mile to Mrs. Rutledgo's; east 2 miles to Silver Leaf; north one mile to Allendalo post olllco; east two miles to Uuford's; north 1 mllo to within 1 mile of Wise post olllco; east one mile; north one mile, west a mllo to tho Wise post office; wost ono mile; south ono ratio to Jno. Clark's; west .' miles to Water's farm: south 1 mllo to Page Fisher's; west ono mllo to Dick Wrights; south to town. The routo is 27 miles long and will servo about 400 people. Tho Allendalo postolllco will bo dis continued, eliminating the Star Itoute, but tho Wlso postolllce will bo continued. Humboldt has also asked for three routes and will doubtless bo visited next. The routes runwost, northeast and southeast from that town. With tho route already allowed at Moran tae county will be pretty woll cov ered. Tho great advantage of tho rural route Bystem is that tho farmer gets his mail delivered without losing tho time of going to town, Ho is in touch with tho world, can send hurry-up letters as compared with tho old way, cau have errands done by tho carrier, can get tho Daily Register every day and in fact enjoys many priv ileges of living in town. About tho only things the carrier cannot do aro delivering liquor, doing business for department stoves or carrying letters or notes between houses. All mail must bo stamped at a post olllco. If the three routes asked for aro allowed, aud It looks as if thoy would bo, Iola will bo indirectly benelltted In that her noarer neighbors will be more Inter ested In the town. 'Carriers have to furnish $1000 bond and at least 100 portions have to agreo o patronize tho routo und maintain tho regulation mail boxes beforo tho route Is established. At the very oarllest it is estimated that Blxty days will olapso boforo anything will be dono in the way of starting, tho car riers. Their Secret is Out. All Sadlovillo, Ky., was curious to learn tho cause of tho vast improve. mont in the health of Mrs. S. P. Whit tikor,.who had for a long time, en dured untold suffering from a chronto bronchial trouble. "It's all due to Dr. King's New Discovery, " writes her husband. "It completely cured her also cured our little grund-daugh-or of a severe attack of Whooping Cough." It positively cures Coughs, Colds, La Grlppo, Hrcnchltis, all Throat and Lung tronblos. MILLER, ATTORNEY AT LAW 10 EA8T MADISON AVENUE SOUTH SIDE SQUnt IOLA, KANSAS once. Fort Hco'ttVrpnipenuico How. Fort Scott, ono of tho towns in the State that has always been wldo open, is torn now with a very hitter toraper-, anco agitation. Uov. H. G. Fraser, who for soveral yoars was pastor of tho Baptist church here anil is woll re membered, visited the town in his ca pacity of State temperance lecturer. As a result a Civic Purity Leajjuo was organized anil information bolng secured ovory saloon in town was raided, oven includingproinlnent hotel bars that had-hereloforo escaped. Tuesday niifht a mass meet ii(j was held In convention hall and atlended by 12,(100 people, so tho papers say. Speeches were made denouncing Fruscr and other members of tho league nnd llie chairman of tho meet ing was aiitboiii'd to appoint a com- inlttco of fifty to look after tho enforcement of tho resolutions adopted. The resolutions blame "a lot of shrewd fanatics" for stirring up strife and trjing to run the city, uhcicas the council can do so far better; deuounco tho interference of outsiders who do not pay taxe; ntato that with open saloons there Is less crime, less drunk enness and a better financial condition of tho city's affairs; and finally pledges tho meeting "to use all Itivvful means" to persuade the agitators to get out of town and stay out. This last is sup posed to hint ut a boycott. Tho speeches were bitter and harsh words 5vero used. Many prominent business men participated and spoke. Now tho temper anco people havo called a mass meeting, and judging from interviews with some of Micinlhoy will not be bullied and will not give up. Tho wholo Stalo will tvatch tho con test with deop interest, for on a small scale it foretells what may coma to tho whole State some day, if tho resub mission plank ever gols into a State platform. If the saloon men win, the day of the resubmission plank wa9 hastened; if tho temperance people win, tho causo of ' temporanco will be strengthened. Hov. Fraserls expected to return to tho iiattloliold, ties pi to tho hinted throats, and tho battlo will be to a finish. Ilortii'iiltuml Meeting. Tho executivo committee of the Horticultural society has decid:d to pospono their August meeting from Friday the 0th to Friday tho 10th. Tho meeting, will bo held at the residence of H. D. Cain, tin ce miles north of Iola. The lale rains havo Improved tho fruit prospect very much, and ull members of the society aro requested to bring samples of fruit. A plcpio'dinnor will bo served in a shady grove to which , all aie Invited to come with dinner baskets well tilled and proyared to havo an inter esting time Q . F. Pancqast, Secret a ry .
