funeral or the Wife and Daughter of Secre tary Tracy. WAsrnxoTOX, Feb 5. The sorrlces over the remains of the wife and daugh ter of the Secretary of the Navy were appointed for eleven o'clock, but long before that hour the East room was crowded with people. It was a most dis tinguished gathering, and Included near ly every body of prominence in Wash ington. The caskets containing the dead were placed side by side undor the central chandelier and directly opposite the main corridor, and were handsomely decorated, many floral wreaths being sent Shortly before eleven o'clock the Schubert quartette, stationed just with in the entrance of the East room from the main corridor, sang the hymn, "I Can Not Always Trace the Way." The members of the Cabinet, with the excep tion of Secretary Blaine, detailed as pall bearers, soon after entered and took seats at tho right of the cas kets. They wore soon followed by the funeral procession, Secretary Tracy and his son Frank walking arm in arm at4 the head. They were followed by General Catlin. Mrs.Catlln, Mrs. Robert Graves and daughter and other relatives. A short distance behind them came President and Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. McKeo, Secretary and Mrs. Maine, Rev. Dr. Scott, the President's father-in-law, Mr. II. II. Raymond and Lieutenant Mason and Mr. E. II. Hal ford. As soon as they were seated the choir Df St. John's Episcopal Church, consist ing ot sixteen whlte-surpliced boys and four men, under tho direction of Mr. W. H. Daniel, tho precentor, entered the main corridor from tho far end and as they passed along its length with slow and measured step sang, as a procession al, the hymn, "Lead. Kindly Light" Dr. Douglas immediately began tho Episcopal burial service: "I am the resurrection and the life." At its con clusion the choir sang the hymn "Jesus, liver of My Soul." Tho scripture les son was read by Rev. Mr. Elliott . The choir then sang "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Mo." A prayer, read by Dr. Douglas, concluded the services. i The President with Secretary Tracy on bis arm, first passed out of the room, and next to them came Mr. Frank Tracy, the son, who was so over come that be had to be supported by two of the ushers. Following the procession came the choir singing, as a recessional hymn. "Abide with me; fast falls the evening tide; the darkness deepens; Lord, with mo abide." The bodies were removed to the hearses and the funeral procession was formed, the cortege moving slowly to Rock Creek cemetery, just beyond the Soldiers' Home, where the bodies were placed in a receiving vault to await Sec retary Tracy's determination in regard to their permanent resting place. STOP THIEF! A Clerk In the I'acllle Kx press Company's Office at Dallas, Tex., Steal S33.0O0 aud Abaconil. St. Locts, Feb. 6. Yesterday L. A. Fuller, superintendent of the Puciflo Express Com pany, was notified by tho Commercial Hank of this city that a package containing S.'i5,000 in green backs consigned to that bank by the City National Hank, of Dallas, Tex., and for which tho Commercial Hank held tho receipt of the Pacific Express Com pany, was missing. February 1 the City National Hank of Dallas remitted to tho Commercial National Hunk of St Louis tho sum of S50.000, of which $15,01)0 was gold in a bag and Sns.DOO in bills enclosed in p regular express package. The gold was duly received two days ago and doliv' ered to the bank, which reported to Su perintendent Fuller that tho gold was only a part of the remittance from tho City National Hank and that the bank held two receipts one for 515,000 and ono for $$5,000. On receipt of this information Super intendent Fuller telegraphed Assistant Superintendent Aiken at Dallas notify ing hint of the shortage, and asking him to investigate and forward Information as soon as possible Mr. Aiken's reply that there was no trace of the missing package there fully confirmed Superintendent Fuller's fears, ftnd with it camo the additional inform ation that tho money clerk of the Dallas office, a young man named F. A. Wal ton, had boon missing since last Sunday night Walton's flight led to the belief at Dallas that he must bo a defaulter, and an investigation was at once instituted, but without result as the cash of the Dallas office was found to be intact When Assistant Superintendent Aiken received Superintendent Fuller's mes sage it opened up a new avenue for in vestigation and the cunning scheme of Walton to secure delay in the discovery of bis shortage was unfolded. He had made out two receipts ono for $15,000 and one for SW.ooo on ono bank. On the duplicate forwarded to St Louis, how ever, no mention was mado of thc&i-V 000 and it was hot until the Commercial Bank of this city had notified the Dallas Bank of the receipt of but $15,000 of the 150,000 that there was the least suspic ion of any thing wrong. After pursuing this lino of Inquiry to the Assistant Superintendent Aiken tel egraphed as follows to Superintendent Fuller: "Walton, our money clerk, has taken 15,000. Ho was with tho Amtr lean Express Company at Iowa, Mich., for five years. He came to us from Wells. Fargo &. Co. His father resides at St Joseph, Mo.
