THE SAUNDERS KILLING.
Uarahal Mlsell's Aooount of the Florida Assassination. -A Deep-Lald Plot For nU IlfeIIU Dm4 Body Suit In The District Not Sale For a Federal Officer. Washington, Feb. SO. The report of John R. Mlzell, United States marshal of Florida, In regard to the Saunders case was made public yesterday. He ays that February 12 be received a tel egram from Deputy Marshal W. B. fiannders at Pensaoola saying that he -would leave that night for Quinoy for a , prisoner in the jail there and asking that the marshal send him any help that lie might call for while there. He re plied by telegraph that he would leave fensacola that night and meet Saunders at Qulncy. He left Jack' , aonville on he seven o'clock train on the night of the 12th, takintr with him Special Deputy Langford, and they arrived at Qulncy about three o'clock the next morning. He continues: 'Iwent to the hotel and waited for Saunders, who arrived on the eastbound train about five o'clock. After break fast I sent Saunders and Langford to make the arrest about six miles out in the country and waited at the hotel for their return. They returned about one o'clock having failed to find their man. About 10:50 a. m. William McFarlin, of Qulncy called at the hotel to see Saun ders, lie seemed surprised to find me V. there but greeted me in a friendly man ner and walked over to the court house where I went to make some inquiries about the venire for jurors for the United States Court and left me there. At din ner time he returned and invited me and Captain Allison, who was present, to dine with him at the hotel. We ac cepted the invitation. Soon after dinner McFarlin invited me to take a drive with him that evening, but I declined. "We then loft tho hotel and on the street xaot Saunders and Langford. McFarlin Invited Saunders to come in and dine with him but Saunders replied that he had been to dinner. McFarlin then said that he (Saunders) must take a drive with him. I called Saunders away and took him to his room where I told tlm that I had every reason to believe that there was a plot to murder him and lie must pay no attention to pretenses of friendship but lot these men alone and remain in his room until I returned, . as I was going out into the country and would be absent a couple of hours, and was absent about three hours. On my return I went to Saundors' room out he was gone. I asked Deputy Lang- M I ..... r. A1.A.A n'ttAMA EniltiilaM was and he Bald he did not know, but he . . was afraid he had been decoyed away, JIoFarlin. I went over to the court louse and there found the sheriff of liausuen iuniy, woo uaa arranged w accompany Saunders and his prisoner to . n . 1 . a . rcnsacola, and asked if be knew where Saunders was. He said he did not; that fiannders told him he was going to take a drive into the country and would be sack at four p. m. While we were talk ing a man named Mitchell drove up to the court bouse with baunders dead ' oody in the buggy and turned the body over to the Bheriff. Saunders was shot through the neck, a pistol ball, proba bly 48-calibcr. having entered tho left aide of tho throat near the jugular vein and come out just back of the right ear. The Bheriff asked Mitchell if he "killed Saundors and he said no. He then asked him if he know who did and he said no. He would make no farther statements. The body was taken out of the buggy and carried into tho court house and Mitchell drove off. I learned afterward from a reliable ' source that Saunders was seen driving oat of town in the buggy with Mitchell and McFarlin. I found in Saundors' pocket his pistol, every barrel loaded, and also a card which McFarlin had left at the hotel for him in the afternoon. The prisoner mentioned in Saundors' telegram was a colored man who had teen arrested by the sheriff of Gadsden for violation of postal laws and confined in the Quincy jaiL In order to shield Txth Saunders and myself as far i - as possible from assassination on the .street after dark I had arranged for the sheriff to deliver the prisoner at the train which left at 5:40 o'clock, and for the sheriff to accompany Saunders and the prisoner to l'ensacola, I in tended to leave the train at River Junc tion and attempt to make an arrest there. After the murder of Saunders I ireoeived intimations from friendly sources that I was not safe in that neighborhood, and it would be well for me to leave as quickly as possible. In view of what had occurred, and the utter hopelessness of then accomplish ing any thing at River Junction I took the evening train for Jacksonville.
