Editors News: Our city council acted wisely when it contracted to use our old city hall building for educational purposes Its barred basement windows savor too much of the old Baxter Springs when chaos reigned and criminal license was su preme. If we could wipe out the influ ence of that past, or if we could efface every vestige of its degrading nature in our midst, then the bright star of hope might appear above our horizon The two fires that cleared Military street and gave ns the morning of new Baxter Springs must be repeated in another form to remove the curse that has fated every enterprise. Perhaps an educational boom ' may help to accomplish that end. We are certain it will prove more satisfactory and less expensive. In the great responsibility assumed by Professors Bowman and Browning, tbey must not be held accountable for all the success of an educational boom, but every citizen of Baxter Springs should feel that he or she has a deep interest in this all im throw off this responsibility if we would see the enterprise a success The greatest obstacle in the way will be to find cheap boarding houses. The natu ral inclination of this community will be to raise the price of board as they have always inflated the price of lots at each of the deathly material booms that her past history has recorded. We have always found it impossible to hold the county summer normal in Baxter because we could not accommodate the teachers with the places and prices they could secure in Columbus. This obstacle must be re moved! Valparaiso, Indiana, which once had no better educational facilities than we pre sent, organized a similar enterprise and when we were last through there she had over eighteen hundred students. . Our Ba ker University at the little town of Bald win is a fine illustration of what a people can do when they are a unit in any move ment. Altamont, in Labette county, through the energy of her citizens, and the wisdom and sagacity of Mrs. Best, their county superintendent, located the Labette county high school at that place, a place of only four hundred inhabitants, and the first year they have over one hun dred and twenty-five students, the very cream of the county, and with Professor Hanna and his able corps of teachers, (bey have made it by far the best high school in Southeastern Kansas. The peo ple in that place offered as an inducement to rent rooms for one dollar s month and each student furnish his own room. If we had a few benevolent men of means in Baxter Springs and could secure the old Occidental, which was once one of our best hotels, and dedicate it to the use of the students as a dormitory instead of al lowing it to stand and disgrace and blacken the character of our city as it has for the past three years, what a grand step in ad vance it would be to encourage the new educational movement. Respectfully, E. O. Noble. ROYALLY ENTERTAINED. On Thursday evening the follow ing members of Baxter Lodge, No. 235, 1. O. O. F., visited Galena Lodge: J. A. Sour, Chas. Jenkins, George H.
