The WVslern shipped a car load

The new mill of the Newlands
Mining Company started opera'
tions last week, and with the
showing of ore they have, Mr.
Merritt will undoubtedly score a
big success with the proposition.
The Lancaster's under ground
development continues to show
unusual rich bodies of ore. Dur
mg the past two or three weeks
several tons of pure galena have
been taken out of the south shaft
of the Omaha.
A rich strike at Quapaw has
already been reported, but all of
the particulars have not been
published, and they are certainly
of great interest to every one.
The vein of ore was struck at 138
feet, and with the exception of 5
feet of lime the vein continues
without interruption to a depth
of 201 feet, which shows an ore
face of 58 feet.
As has often been related, this

the fact that they encountered a
second run of selvage at a depth
of 105 feet, after passing through
a 27-foot vein of jack and 6 1-2
feet of blue flint. This selvage
carries lead, and in addition the
Virginia has made some remark
able showings, which fact is of
particular interest, because the
mine is the farthest west in thd
camp, and most 01 tne big ieaa
strikes have been in the east
mines. The Cherokee, Mission,
Kramer-Morse and Virginia lead
strikes prove that with develop
ment great bodies of pure Galena
are going to be brought in
throughout the entire camp. '
At no time in the history of
the Quapaw mining camp has
everything looked so prosperous
as now. The past week has re
vealed some exceedingly rich ore
mines, and enough ore in sight
and enough ore stoped down and
lying on the floor to make any
company immensely rich. 'It is
the greatest camp that I have
ever seen, and, in tact it is so tar
ahead of all others that there is
no comparison to be made, and
anyone can truthfully say that
the Baxter camp is a camp all by
itself, for its resources are double
and probably quadruple the re'
sources of any other camp in the
world thus far discovered."
These expressions, coming from
a man who is a practical miner,
and who has visited and worked
in what have heretofore been con
sidered the world's greatest lead
and zinc properties, are certainly
worth publishing, and are well
worth the consideration of the
public in general.

The Hobo has developed into a
rich lead proposition, add the
showing of ore all the 'way

who are interested in the mining
business should make it a point
to visit this property, for they

A V$ry Big Rain.
The rain of Monday night was
the heaviest ever recorded in this
country. Beginning about ten
o'clock the rain fell continually
all night, and at times the fall
was very heavy. Spring branch,
which runs through this city, be
came a regular river, and broke
over its banks in several places.
At the planing mill a big boat
which had been setting on some
trestles, was washed away and
went down stream some distance.
Fences and outbuildings along
the stream suffered considerably.
Spring river got out of its
banks, and by eight o'clock the
next morning was eight inches
deep between the bridges and
was still raising at noon Tuesday.
At the reunion grounds the
electric launch, which was anch
ored in the branch back of the
engine house, was sunk, but can
