Hard Blow to Baxter. Work of Rebuilding to' Commence as Soon as Arrangements Can be Made. A few moments before six o'clock last Sunday morning the fire alarm sounded, and it was found that the building occupied by the Campbell (J nig store was on fire. The fire started in the basement among the paint and oil stock, and before a sufficient force could be gathered to cope with the situation the flames had gathered such headway that it was impossible with the limited means at hand to quench them. A burning drug store is a bad thing to fool with, on account of the oils and chemicals, and once one gets afire it is almost impossi ble to save it, Nothing was saved from the drug store but a machine used to trim wallpaper with. While the drug store was burn ing willing hands, hundreds of them, rushed into the Pointer hotel, next door and began to save the goods from that place and from Polster Bros.' depart ment store.-next north of the hotel building. Polster Bros.' stock of perhaps $20,000 worth of goods was entirely carried from the building and across the street. Of course the stock was badly damaged by being moved so nurriealy oy inexperienced hands, hut it was saved from the flames. Most of the hotel fur nishings were saved, also, the heaviest stuff alone being lost, Even the fixtures were saved from Polster Bros., but of course they were damaged somewhat. Mrs. Sour moved her hotel be longings to the old Springs ho tel building where she will re- sume business, roister rof,' goods are stored in various places, and will be opened for business just as soon as the In surance adjusters can settle the loss. Campbell's drug stock is a com plete loss, amounting to some thing over $6000, with insurance amounting to $4,100. The block burned was 100 feet front, full two stories high, and was the handsomest business block in the city. J. G. Polster, deceased built the corner build ing which was occupied by the drug store, and Mrs. Sour built the next twenty-five feet north. Polster Bros, used to be in busi ness in that 25 feet, but a couple of years ago they built fifty feet just north and moved into it. They had one of the nicest busi ness rooms in the Southwest and were very proud of it. They had by close .application to busi ness and the very best of busi ness methods built up a trade second to none in this part of the country. ' Maypr Jones, -during the fire, phoned to Joplin for the chemical auto wagon of the Joplin fire de partment, and it started at once nfor this place, but was recalled I? . a ji . i 1' 1 1 wnen ii was iouna mai omj one charge of chemicals was on the wagon. One charge would not have been nearly enough to have done any good. The chemical auto carries only one charge, as in Jtj Ha nt charge is all tint is necessary to carry, as a supply follows. In this case supplies could not have followed quick enough to have been of benefit. The thanks of the people of this city are due the Joplin depart ment, however, as it was willing to help us out. The fire burned very rapidly, and being fanned by a stiff wind from the southeast could not be controlled. If a fire plug had been handy the flames could have been smothered in their in- cipiency. Julius Bischofsberger ran to the Springs hotel and awakened the Campbell brothers, but when they arrived at their store it was too late to save anything, as the smoke from the burning oils would have smothered anyone trying to enter the buttdjug, Walter Jones, night clerk at the Polster hotel, woke up the guests and did what he could, losing all his belongings except the clothing he had on by his de votion to others, The amounts of the losses on the hotel and store buildings and Polster Bros., nor amount of insurance carried is obtainable at this time, It is believed the properties will he rebuilt, but the interested parties say they do not want to declare their intentions now.
